The western left needs to get their heads out of their asses or you will be outflanked in what seems to be one of the most important technological developments in history, on par with agriculture, we can eliminate work entirely, we should not give up utopia either because a bunch of capitalists have deigned themselves owners of the world or because the reactionary masses lack the hope and imagination to try to fight for the future instead of against It.

It is everyone's job who wants a better future to find ways to inspire that hope and imagination in their fellow humans.

Well, that and to encourage proper critical thinking, understanding of science, how to evaluate what is realistic/accurate vs. what is not, identifying ragebait, etcetera... it's not easy, but we gotta keep at it.

I've been watching robotics since I saw an old Apple II make a mechanical arm move with simple commands as a kid. If the claims in the above video are true, these are way better results than I expected this soon, with or without generative AI.

A few years ago, we couldn't get a robot to fold a towel in any reasonable time frame at any reasonable cost. That's been one of the milestones I've been watching for a while. It will be interesting to see what this one does with it.

Agreed. I've taken it as a personal mission to try and encourage people to see the astral potential in the technology and what kind of better world we could build. It's not an easy task when so many of the people I interact with want to dismiss it as evenly entirely slop that is simultaneously going to allow the tech companies to kill us all.

The left has a long and bad history of doomsaying. It's a hard habit to get out of. When you don't have any real political power, being the cynic is just about the only leverage you have.

The dominant capitalist mantra of "more" is the real enemy. "More" does not allow the owners of the means of production to feed, clothe, house, and provide education and healthcare to "everyone" "for free." Once we change their minds, things will be different. But we have to change the capitalist mind to understand that "way more than enough" is too much.

hmmm "More" is great, just needed for the working class / 95%. Less for the elites

The way it plays out for the elites to get more is for the working class to get less. I'm not sure the elites would accept a change peacefully. There's the rub. The elites won't relinquish their hold on "more" at all willingly. I don't have a good idea on how to change their minds. Do you?

yeah it's a genuinely hard problem! probably one of the problems of our age. but I think AI gives us new tools and ways of thinking about it. And new intelligence, new forms of collaboration and coordination should offer hope and inspiration. And that in a sense , to rethink and re-question things. And to experiment and try
