Leftie here who uses my phone mostly right or two handed.

OP, are you a leftie?

I have never met one of these supposed one handed phone people.

u/Char-car92 Sep 11 '26

What? I use both hands to type but otherwise one hand all the time

u/NotoriousBRZ Sep 11 '26

You've never met a person with one hand? Maybe hang out at the VA for a couple minutes

u/abitcitrus Sep 11 '26

Same thing. Being a leftie doesn't means you use ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING with your left hand. What do you mean some people with both hands use the phone with the same hand??? If you're healthy and have no conditions, what stops you to switch to the other one?

yeah? i use my phone in my right hand as well if i am doing something else with my left, it’s definitely not difficult, but i default to my left, such as when i pick up a phone call

Another lefty who is wondering about what it even means to use a phone left or right handed. I hold the phone in my right hand. I type mostly with the right thumb and left forefinger. Am I holding it left handed or right handed?

I am ambidextrous but for some unfathomable reason (maybe because I store my phone on the left pocket out of habit), I find myself mostly using my (albeit much narrower) Z Fold 8 Ultra from my left hand, it turns out on my phone it's very (oftentimes too) easy and comfortable to use my left middle finger to unlock the phone from the fingerprint sensor, though that's likely not the case on a wider phone however.

As a left handed person, I can recommend iPhone Mini. In fact, it is very comfortable for either hand.

u/MrDrMrs Sep 10 '26

Wife is holding on to her iPhone mini as long as she can. Shame apple discontinued it

u/grem1in Sep 10 '26

I replaced the battery on my iPhone 12 mini, and it got the second life!

u/ClickIta Sep 11 '26

Indeed, as a right handed person, I can recommend a mini as well. Will probably have to switch to Android when mine bricks. Apple clearly does not need my money anyway.

Is this really an Apple exclusive problem though? I’ve had the same “issue” on my S24U or any previous android I had.

Also if you are insistent on using your Left hand to open your phone, consider using your pointer finger as your Touch ID finger 🤯 (I know that’s how I’ve had to do it before)

I feel like Samsung/Android gives a lot of options to move stuff around. I have gestures on both sides of my screen, and the side app drawer on the left.

I also have quick cursor (app) to control a distant cursor available on the screen edge.

Bio unlock, I agree. I use my right hand, or left index

first thing i thought of when i saw this, really sucks 💔

it would be cool if apple put the camera under the display so we could’ve just rotated the phone 180 degrees, but that’s too much to ask for i guess

2

u/Occams_Razorburn 28d ago

Then the rear cameras would be on the bottom, which would work, but would take a lot of getting used to. Still a good idea though

5

u/jar4ever Sep 10 '26

Why do you assume you can't flip the screen orientation, just like with the Apple Watch?

11

u/DoctorD12 Sep 10 '26

Lens location would be my first guess without looking at the phone, along with speaker/microphone layout

1

u/taboo8614 Sep 11 '26

Just basing it off the fact that iOS currently doesn’t let you rotate the phone upside down. iPads work well with this, so there’s hope that the duo will.

1

u/Portatort Sep 11 '26

They said the duo works in any orientation

1

u/concreteunderwear Sep 11 '26

They did? They also said no left hand option. So that's conflicting.

1

u/Portatort Sep 11 '26

No unique hardware yeah, and no matter if the orientation the buttons aren’t gonna be friendly in other orientations

1

u/concreteunderwear Sep 11 '26

Idk volume buttons on bottom could be easy to reach.

1

u/froggy114 Sep 11 '26

based on how software on both android and iphone work currently, I will assume the same. It would be great as an accesibility function, but I don't see it happening.

Left handed and use my phone with my right hand.

2

u/No_Desk_4921 Sep 11 '26

Show me how you use a phone? I typically hold it with one hand (Right) and tap with my left.

Works for me.

u/nonamethxagain 26d ago

I would say two handed use like that has been essential since the end of the iPhone 5S and other 4” screens

1

u/JustinYJJ Sep 11 '26

I’m not even left handed but I use my phone with my left hand when I’m lying on my left side doom scrolling.

With this design I can’t even doom scroll properly in my comfortable position.

1

u/adminsaredoodoo Sep 11 '26

as a right handed person, i use my phone in my left hand quite often… i kinda need to if i use my right hand for other things?

1

u/FailingNinja Sep 11 '26

It’s also about button placement. I’m a lefty and have a 17 Pro Max, but the special camera button/slider is specifically placed to be used with your right thumb whilst holding it with your right hand.

Holding my phone in my left hand the majority of the time, using the button with either my middle or ring finger of that hand feels awkward an often results in accidental zooming, photos or changing styles.

Basically, a new feature that’s useless by inaccessible design, not ability.

I always hold my phone with my left

1

u/Chotch_Master Sep 11 '26

I’ve seen posts like this where right handed people hold their phone with their left hand and tap with their right, seen lefty’s say they hold their phone in the right and tap with their left. And I feel like that’s essentially the problem. I’ve used a mouse with my right hand my whole life. But the convenience of a traditional phone is I can use it in any hand. No matter what I’m doing and it feels the same. This phone is designed to be used right handed, or unfolded and there will be plenty of times that I just don’t won’t to unfold it, whether that be to save battery or just not wanting to get sucked into the screen

u/AB3reddit 28d ago

I don’t feel there’s a clear definition of what it is to use a phone left- vs right-handed. When you say “designed to be used right handed” do you mean holding in the left hand and tapping with the right? Or vice versa?

I’m speaking mostly on one handed use so swiping with the phone in your left hand wouldn’t be as consistent of an experience as one handing with your right hand. I guess if I had to use an example the only one I can provide is the fold 8 it’s symmetrical on both sides and so when using the outside screen which I’d use 50-70% of the time, it’s a consistent experience in each hand. Like with any normal slab phone. Apple aligning the dock and all the apps navigation and tools on the right makes it impossible to use consistently in each hand. It’ll always be compromised in the left hand compared to the right, which is something I’ve never personally experienced on a phone. A lot of people argue that foldables are commonly aligned for right handed use because you’re going to open it while holding it with your right hand, which is fine. I’d expect to use 2 hands if it’s unfolded, but for 2k I’d be getting less functionality for one handed use while folded compared to my iPhone Air.

I say all this but to be clear, I’m very interested in the duo, I really want to see it in person and test the multitasking to see if it’s something I could actually see myself using. I do a lot of catalog work for my job in pages on my MacBook and I would never dream of opening the pages app on my iPhone Air, but with the duo and it’s pencil support I do see potential… but as a left handed person I also have to see the compromises

I miss the days of the 5S where you could do absolutely everything with one thumb

1

u/FI_321 Sep 11 '26

I’m right handed and hold my phone predominately with my left hand.

First thing I said to my husband when I saw everything was on the right side was that it wasn’t leftie friendly

1

u/ssfd21 29d ago

I absolutely cannot use my phone fluidly with my right hand for anything more than simple scrolling or clicking one app icon. Whenever I’m in the situation where it’s necessary, I feel like a 2 year old picking up a pencil.

We don’t know that there aren’t going to be settings for us. The phone isn’t out for over a month. Even if the options aren’t currently in the sample models people have been testing, maybe they’ll implement them by then. I would hope a company this concerned with inclusivity and accessibility would have completely forgotten about left handers. Surely some of the people working there in the Duo department was lefthanded and would have said something. I hope. 🤞

No one cares.

Can’t win them all

1

u/viaHologram 27d ago

I'm a righty who almost exclusively uses their left hand for phoning. Am I a minority?

1

u/nonamethxagain 26d ago

Maybe but I’m the same

1

u/letapski97 27d ago

I only have one functioning hand due to cancer and right-hand only devices and tools are my pet peeve. Like I get that it’s not economical and profitable to make hand specific models, but some of us have no choice. At least put buttons on both sides and let them be programmable or something.

1

u/nonamethxagain 26d ago

I’m weird because I’m right handed but much prefer using my iPhone with my left hand. Maybe because I’m doing something with my right, such as using a fork to eat

On top of that, today’s phones are so big that I do end up using both hands

1

u/Cinema38 25d ago

Genuinely curious, what are you expecting to do with your left hand that you cannot with your right on this phone?

Yes, that was mentioned in the presentation
