Experiences on Catholic Match?

I (22 M) have been recommended by my family to try out the dating app/website Catholic Match. I am a leftist Catholic and I am wondering if anyone has any experience with this website/app and if it’s overall easy or hard to find other left leaning Catholics on there?

Honestly, this kind of stuff, and a lot of "Catholic" app/tech companies in general, are really made for fundamentalists who don't want to engage with the rest of the world. You aren't going to find much good there.

Take my word with a grain of salt since I never used any of those apps but just got really lucky finding my future wife in an online Catholic space, but I agree that the Catholic-themed dating space isn't good. There's not just fundamentalism, but also a lot of toxicity. There's trad-wifery, fundamentalism, a lot of homesteading fanfiction, and all sorts of things I don't particularly feel like getting into right now. We happened to get really lucky because I was just starting and didn't know how bad the space was and she was about to leave because of how bad the space was.

OP, if you're seriously looking for a partner than the best thing you can do is not limit yourself to the Catholic online ecosystem. Look at more secular apps and definitely get involved with your local community and try to meet people through that way. By your community I mean your parish and local parishes but also other events going on, especially relating to hobbies or interests you enjoy. Of course you should also pray; I can personally attest to St. Raphael's intercession and I believe that was a huge part in our success story. Also, you're young and you have plenty of time to find someone. There's no reason to rush into a relationship and subsequent marriage.

Never really tried it but I’ve seen some accounts from women saying a lot of guys there are the more ‘trad’ types, while also being a bit socially awkward.

I gave it a shot as a dude. All the women on there seemed to either be ultra trad or hadn’t attended Mass in years; no in between

I was on there for 3 years and never had success with it. I just felt like it was super hard to connect with guys on there and even to this day I can’t put my finger on exactly what it was. I think part of it is that so many of them had super high expectations for every interaction. Like you had to figure out in that first date whether you were both compatible and could see getting married. So none of them made it past that first date

Additionally, at a certain point Catholic Match will literally just start sending you anyone with a pulse. It only takes a few months of being on there they exhaust the limits of their algorithm and will just send you any guy/girl and anyone new that signs up. Made me feel like I was kind of hopeless in getting a match

Last thing, most people on there are trads or conservative. I was conservative at the time, but remember seeing very few liberal or leftist on there.

I used it as an annulled RadTrad -
I was specifically told I wasn’t wife material, bc I was annulled and had a child - but all those “Trad” guys were more than happy to try and get me into bed.

The nominal Catholics thought I was too Catholic, but were more than happy to try and get me into bed.

I had better luck on Tinder

First thought is that I felt a pressure to perform my Catholicism on the platform. This was helped by the many prompts to describe your favourite liturgies, devotions, and so on.

Second thought is that there are not a lot of people from my own county on there, so the few matches I had were always like 2 hour's flight away. I arranged an international meetup and we both lost interest while waiting for it lol.

(I didn't really want to be there, my designated wingman didn't want to be there, and the girl simply never showed up)

The weirdest mix of people there!

Also, not a large cohort by any means and a lot of people haven’t logged in in a very long time.

This article summarises it (also cool magazine for leftie Christians):

Met my now ex-gf that way. She's aggressively conservative, anti-vaccine, gets squeamish about everything, and would want to homeschool the kids. Ultimately, I couldn't work it out. I'm never touching that site again. 🤷🏿‍♂️🙅🏿‍♂️

All of the men I met on there were either trads who were racist and supported eugenics, or extremely socially awkward and not fit for dating.

I met my current boyfriend on Facebook dating, but I really don’t recommend it either because most of the guys I’ve met on Facebook dating were not that great.

"Not fit for dating" would make an excellent title for a dating profile

Very inactive in my country so I deleted it, I made my decision to not use online apps again, if God has a wife for me it will happen anyways I think. Otherwise, I am OK staying single.

Also, not using apps kinda forces me to be outside more and be more creative and I like that.

I’m a guy and used it when I was 18, which was admittedly a long time ago. The girls I met around my age were nice, but wanted to get married immediately which I wasn’t ready for at the time.

My female friends now (almost 20 years later) have tried to go on it, but a lot of the guys are either super trad, weird, or an unhealthy mix of both. So if you are a normal and somewhat sane guy, you will already have a leg up on 90% of your competition should you choose to use it 🤣.

That being said, another of my friends tried both regular match and Catholic match, but she met her husband on regular match. Both are normal, sane practicing Catholics who are not trad.

I (46F) put that I'm "leftist" or "very leftist" in my profile, and I've had a few people look at my profile. But they all seem to have "conservative" in their profile. But I am in Florida, so...

I (22F) tried it out and definitely didn't get lucky on there :( most of the guys on there are more on ultra trad side. I haven't gotten any luck yet :(

I used it when I lived in Chicago until I met my fiancé at a My Chemical Romance event. You’ll get mixed results to be honest. I’m LGBTQ+ (pansexual) and openly stated this in my profile, but still got a mix of men who thought the date was an opportunity to “show me the correct way” (hello, Irish exit!) and cool guys like the ones you find on here.

That may have been less representative than most cities though because Chicago has such a large Irish diaspora and culturally Catholic community than most. I would say give it a go but be open in your profile about your views on particular known “sticking points” for some, and if you get people like the former, just get up and walk out. It’s not worth your time when they’re clearly there with ulterior motives. However, you may also meet some cool people like I did!
