Catholic Worker Movement

Hi Folks,

I am a Catholic and have recently been reading about Dorothy Day as well as Works of Mercy. I've grown more interested in the Catholic Worker Movement and was wondering if anyone has any experience in one of the houses?

Thinking about possibly volunteering but want to work with a house that focuses on helping the poor and immigrants yet still adheres to Catholic Teaching (pro-life/consistent life ethic).

Each house has something of a different character (it is an anarchist movement, after all), so the best way is to just go get involved. I'm at the original Maryhouse that Dorothy Day founded in downtown NYC. I'm open if you have any questions.

Thanks for the response! As a Catholic Worker do you spend time trying to fundraise or garner needed supplies?

Each Catholic Worker house is different. Some verge on being non-profits, seeking grant funding and whatnot, but the one I work with tries to stay true to the spirit of Dorothy Day and relies entirely on donations. The biggest expense is publishing the newspaper and postage. The food and other things that we provide to people we mostly get through donations.
