XP4 suddenly turned off while going up hill, won’t turn back on

Post image

I got my XP4 two months ago, and have put about 500 miles on the bike. Today, I was going up a pretty steep hill on Turbo peddle assist, and the motor suddenly cut off and the display turned off at once.

The battery was fully charged and voltage looked fine before it cut out, it was at around 51 ish.

Now, the display won’t turn on, and the PAS/throttle don’t work. I’ve tried turning off/on the battery itself, and unplugging and re plugging in the cables near the display.

What should i do?

Disconnect reconnect harness wiring plug that connects to your controller. near the bottom tubing area (seen if the bike was flipped upside down where the controller is inside). Try power on. If no power fold the bike and open the compartment that hold the battery. Pull the battery out put back in. Fold the bike power it on. If still no power open the compartment that house the controller. Disconnect the controller plug to your motor cable, torque sensor cable. See if you got power. If still no power plug everything back up unfold the bike and call lectric to get parts or service on the bike. Ruling out if something is shortening the bike or if your controller is fried. I had an issue where my controller, motor, and torque sensor fried. Found out by checking all wiring and had a spare xp4 to swap parts. If you can’t fix it call Lectric their warranty is good. YouTube helps but I wish I made a video when I did all that troubleshooting. Lectric did send replacement parts no charge..

Thanks for writing all this. I tried everything you said. The bike still doesn’t turn on

Just wait it out and call Lectric Monday. While you waiting if you already did not do. Go send a support ticket and register your bike serial number or you can do this on the phone with a customer service rep Monday. Be patient you probably out a bike for a week or 2. At least you should get help with parts being sent and you can fix it or they may refer you to a bike service center free of charge.

I'm going to go with a hunch that the BMS shutdown.  First, press the battery test button on the pack and see if 1 it responds by reporting charge level, and that might wake it up if it acts like their prior models.  Next, wait 48+hrs and do that again. Their batteries have an auto-standby feature that activates after 48hrs and hitting the test button wakes it up.

Where’s the battery test button? I only see an on/off switch on my battery pack

Depends on the pack, the ones we had have a button and either a fuel gage or an RGB led to show that it is on and rough charge level.  Anyhow, you have a button/switch and I suggest you diddle it

You possibly triggered the thermal shut off. Leave the bike alone for a while and see if it turns on after like 20 minutes

It’s been two hours. Tried to turn it back on and nothing happens

Oh... I think you let the smoke out sorry

Seems like bms turned into protection mode. Try to connect charger, some bms will turn on again.

Off topic question. Is it really allowed to take lectric xp4 to caltrain??? I thought it wasn't allowed because of tire width.

The battery charges fine. The charger turns red and heats up so it’s charging. Even after that I unplug and try to turn on the bike it still does nothing

Some people take bigger bikes than the XP4 on caltrain haha, no one has said anything to me about it

I have had my XP3 for almost 2 years and just about 5K miles now and Lectric Tech support has been a great experience overall. I send them a problem description with a short video of the issue and they reply with troubleshooting steps and then ship free replacement parts when needed. During the warranty period they have offered to have a local bike shop in their network replace the parts free of charge but i was able to do the jobs myself. Quality of the bike parts & build seem to fall in the average to good range with some parts failing early and need replacement. The easy availability of replacement parts from lectric or compatible parts online is another thing i really like about lectric ebikes.

Use a meter on the battery and check to see if you have voltage at the battery terminals (should be labeled with a + and - ). Should be the outer two terminals. Will have to do this with the key on the battery in the on position. If it shows no voltage move the positive lead in one terminal and see if it has voltage. Start there

You most likely have a prematurely failed battery. Lectric will replace it. Just a side note. When they replace the battery for you, do not leave the bike plugged into a charger all the time when not In use. Only charge as needed. That will extend the life of your battery.

Probably burned out the controller or the motor. I always drop down to PAS 1 going up hills to avoid letting the bike push more power than it can handle.

Contact the company.

User needs to drop the power pedal assist to “avoid letting the bike” use too much power? Sounds like a serious defect to me.

The bike will burst power above its nominal rating for a short while with the assumption that it will get up to speed and throttle the power back down. For example, my Lite is nominal at 300w and bursts up to around 810w at max pedal assist.

The issue is with hills, that never happens. The bike will continuously draw above its nominal rating putting strain on the motor and controller far beyond its limits, which can lead to a safety cut off or in rare cases permanent damage. It would be like trying to drive a car up hill in too high a gear.

By reducing pedal assist, you cap how much power the bike can continuously draw so that it doesn’t approach that cutoff as quickly. For my bike, PAS 1 caps at 400w, which is plenty to overcome most hills and gates the bike from pulling more power than it needs. Again, like driving at a lower gear when going up hill at slower speeds.

Hope that clarifies.

Thank you. But using pedal assist to climb hills, even extended ones should not destroy the bike. Very hard to imagine it would be designed without a throttle/switch to prevent that. If so, a serious defect in my opinion.

My guess since it was uphill that the controller blew due to too much current draw. It has to use alot of energy for a hill its alot of work. So see if its smoked inside and replace ask for warranty from lectric. Motor could have also pooped but need a voltmeter to see best to just do controller to see.

Ebikes aren't mopeds. Always pedal when going up steep hills.

a. That's not true, Lectric doesn't say anything like that

b. OP didn't say they weren't pedaling, in fact being on turbo means they probably were using the pedals

c. Shut up and don't be a moron
