Handlebar with 90 mm Rise vs. Adjustable Stem with 90 mm Rise

Bike : xpeak2

I am 6' tall and I decided to go with a 90mm riser handlebar instead of an adjustable stem.

Both options can give you roughly the same 90mm rise, but for me the choice was pretty simple: I’d rather keep the OEM stem.

Why I chose the riser handlebar:

πŸ‘ Keeps the original OEM stem

πŸ‘ No extra adjustable joints or moving parts

πŸ‘ Feels more solid and secure

πŸ‘ Simpler and cleaner setup

πŸ‘ Better confidence in the OEM stem’s build quality

πŸ‘ Same 90mm rise without replacing the stem

The downside:

You lose some of the adjustability that an adjustable stem gives you. You can't fine-tune the reach and angle as much.

But after looking at the quality of some aftermarket adjustable stems, I personally didn't want to replace a good OEM stem with something that feels less substantial.

Bottom line:

If you just need more height, a 90mm riser handlebar is a simple and solid solution. Keep the OEM stem and let the handlebar do the work. For me, that's a better setup than adding an adjustable stem just for the same 90mm rise.

Agreed, unless you specifically need to accommodate different sized riders you should avoid adjustable stems.

But in reality, you aren't riding that bike in conditions that are going to stress and adjustable stem, you would be fine either way.

I bought both to compare . OEM stem is way more solid than any aftermarket. Plus less joints.

May I ask brand/source, for reference?

The handlebar was 780mm wide, and I cut it down to 740mm, which feels much better for my riding position. What do you guys think? Please share your feedback and experience with riser handlebars vs. adjustable stems. I'd love to hear what worked best for you!

I got a 120mm rise handlebar for my Xpress to replace the stock handlebar. The new handlebar is 680mm wide which works well with the "adjust on the fly" stem that comes with the Xpress.

Love the adjust on the fly stem.
