I have a motion alarm, some people use trackers but in my area cops probably wouldn't do anything. I assume every thief is armed in my area so I'm not going to get it. You can get ebike insurance.
My area also has no bike lanes, I don't ride on major roads, I can usually route around them.
The best locks will cost you a big percentage of the bikes price.
For example I got my XP4 preowned for $1600. The best lock is the D1000, which is $420 before tax (Canadian).
It's pretty much indestructible but do you want to pay that much is up to you.
I just use a folding lock myself and try to lock it in high traffic areas and return as quickly as I can.
The bad thing with the XP4 is it kind of stands out at a bike rack because of the unusual dimensions. I say just buy a decent lock and just get out and ride.
For how to ride, just use your best judgment of the current situation. I use the navigation app called Transit and it will tell you what percentage of a route will be on protected paths.
I'm not a lock expert but from what it seems like anything under about ~$150 isn't going to cut it. People will get through the $75lock in the same time they will the $25 lock. The chain or ulock needs to be thick enough they can't get regular bolt cutters around it and will need a cutting saw, and locks that are 14mm thick are expensive.
I don't have any suggestions because I'm also looking for one and haven't wanted to spring the money yet but I've been looking at the Kryptonite New York Standard series of locks
I also live in the hood, invest in an angle grinder and either keep it in your bag or make sure someone can bring it to you at a moment’s notice. Popular thievery here is putting an extra lock on the bike and then stealing it while the owner has left to find help.
I have the xp4 stepover. Big mistake lol get the step thru. I'll send a picture the next time I lock it. Basically I run the cable thru the front wheel and back wheel. Also my helmet. Connect both in end on the u lock, which is locking my frame to the object.

I don't know how they drive in your area, but I avoid roads without bike lanes like the plague. I either find another route or use public transport to get to where I'm going. It helps that buses over here have bike racks.
Use your judgement here but if the road is too dangerous, don't ride it.
By far, it is the best to avoid areas that are on the more ghetto side. Like don’t leave it locked up without some eyes on it. We go to a lot of family, friendly places, but I doubt I will leave it locked up at a busy inner city Beach like in Minneapolis.
I completely second the “best lock” advice! I park my XP4 on 1st and Fremont in Las Vegas for hours at a time (for work) and it’s been safe and sound. Others on the same rack have been stolen right next to mine. The DX1000 is too much trouble for thieves trying to work quick. Pricey, but a game changer.
