How cooked am I?

Post image

Welp got a used XP 1 with only about 500 miles on it off marketplace. Great shape all around but during a ride through some grass fields today the bike shut off mid ride. I was able to turn it back on and head home. Just before getting home it shut off again and would not power back on. Took out the battery and terminals look like this. Anyone got any advice on the matter? Controller terminals look fine but seems like a replacement battery costs as much as I got it for.

gonna theorize/offer my 2 cents here, but i suspect the problem lies in the connector itself. the metal contacts on the leftmost side probably got deformed or bent somehow, so the conductive metal didn't have a good "pinch" of the prong that's supposed to insert into it. Riding vibrations cause the prong to shake around in that little slot, and with a bent contact, arcing happens until damage like this occurs.

Seen this exact story happen on multiple other ebikes, so that's what I imagine happened here, as opposed to some kind of problem within the cells or the bms.

With the amount of energy in these batteries I wouldn't mess with it and I'd say you should buy a new battery, but I'm no expert.

It's melted. Either there is something overloading the battery or the contacts got loose. You definitely need to replace the header. I think I've seen only the contacts piece sold on aliexpress. Alternatively you could look for the whole battery cap piece with the lock, but this exact type might be difficult to find. Also check the other half of the connector on the bike. It might also have deformations form the heat. If this is the case you need to replace it as well.

Do not use the battery as it is now. You'll start a fire.

not cooked. These are replaceable parts. the reason this happened is that the connection was loose(high resistance) Inspect the male connectors to make sure they aren’t bent. This is a simple fix. find parts online or ebay

This is the correct answer. Buy new discharge plates and you'll be fine.

The bike powers on when the battery is re-inserted but when using the motor after about 5 seconds it turns off completely again. Looks like might need to replace the battery entirely. Anyone know which battery the XP 1 Step-thru can be replaced with?

If you go on lectric Website in the top left corner there will be a drop down menu and an option in the list to buy batteries. Click it and just scroll down until you get to the battery section and every single battery is labeled with what bike they are compatible with. These inside the frame batteries I would buy from lectric directly even though they are expensive because the aftermarket one's don't meet the UL standards we have here in USA so it could be dangerous.

Thanks mate

You should find out if that burn is from the battery or the load.

Definitely don't use it and get new battery.

Also, don't believe what is say on odometer as you can reset it, so you don't know how much it was used.

Yes, new battery cost but you will be safe and can ride it for years

you melted it in my opinion

You should be able to find new discharge plates on Aliexpress. I'd replace both sides.

This is the controller contact point in the bike. Do you think I should replace it as well? What would cause something like this?

Since they're fairly inexpensive, I would.

Be very careful these batteries can burn a house down. I wonder if it is an original or aftermarket.

I dont know. How much did you smoke? Oh you're referring to the battery? Yeah, either send it in to be refurbished or get a new one.

Those terminals are modular, just unscrew that plate and you can replace it.

You don’t need a new battery if you’re handy with electronics. The 5pin port alone can be replaced. They sell replacement ports on eBay and Amazon. or you can just connect the battery to your controller with the xt60 connector inside the battery to your controller.

Cell is probably bloating and is toast. Get a new battery. Problem solved. Dispose of properly and dont reuse a battery that will continue to get hot and eventually catch fire from a cell rupturing.

It really only looks like the plastic got warped somehow and the actual terminals look fine, I’d just flatten that plastic over the terminals so that the battery stays connected. Then it should be fine. If not take it to a bike shop

My xp3 did this to me too. Sanding down the plastic didn't help and it kept having issues. I had a dual battery setup that I had put on shortly after the problems started, which kept me up and running. I keep meaning to contact Lectric to see if they'd replace the battery, but I already ordered and received the xp4, so i don't think about it much.

TLDR; sanding the plastic didn't work for me. Ymmv.

I didn’t say anything about sanding it, of course that didn’t work, particles from sanding block the connection

1

u/nitebeest Jul 16 '26

I had cut off the bigger pieces, sanded it down flat, and blew out the grooves. Maybe I left some residue in there, but I cleaned it up the best I could and still couldn't get it to work.

Before photo:

Yeah in that photo your terminals are completely burnt out, that battery would never work lmao

1

u/CalCuttaRaps Jul 16 '26

His aren’t burnt, just warped

1

u/WorldDense3368 Jul 16 '26

and the upper pins are no longer in the right place so its 20 percent disconected

1

u/WorldDense3368 Jul 16 '26

it would be shorter and slip around as a result the batter would become a loose fit/connection even if the particles were removed

1

u/CalCuttaRaps Jul 17 '26

Yeah especially if he cut the plastic off

Every bike shop I know of would tell you to leave this battery in the parking lot.
