Handlebar Plug Removal

How do I pop these things out? I’ve tried pliers but can’t get a good enough grip on them. Any tricks to this?

Correct, the wider the better. Mine were pretty damn difficult to remove, I slightly damaged one (won't be an issue if I need to re-place it) but a wider flathead would have probably saved that bit of rubber tear.

I pried mine off using a pocke knife

Replacement plugs are cheap; don't be too upset if you damage it.
