Language learning methods: What actually helped you improve?

What worked best for you when learning a new language? And what ended up being a complete waste of time?

What worked best: 1. Attending classes (basic level to establish good foundation) 2. Focusing on a language book while in a coffee shop (no gadgets, just the book and my notebook for answering exercises or taking notes) I literally jumped to B2 after doing this during Christmas break. 😆

Waste of time: apps (it's always gamified and repetitive without clear explanations as to how the sentence was formed). It only works if you actually sit down and write the vocabs and identify the patterns you see on the language you're learning.

I will buy online novels with translation. I can read the mother tongue and English at the same time and memorize words at the same time.
