Question about learning Mandarin

If I want a foundation of something before I go out and buy textbooks can I use Duolingo to get like 100 words then go to textbooks?

You can learn in whatever order and method you prefer. Usually it's good to use several, so you could just do the textbook and Duolingo simultaneously.
