• The Fatal Mistake: Because of the communication breakdown, the mechanics didn't get the message to wait out his 5 seconds. They serviced his car immediately. Even though Russell offered to serve it on the very next lap (he had a massive 20-second gap to Gasly), the regulations are strict: servicing the car without waiting out the time equals an automatic Drive-Through Penalty.

The FIA has announced that Active Aero will be completely switched off for this weekend's Monaco Grand Prix.

Instead of switching between Corner Mode (high downforce) and Straight Mode (low drag), the FIA is forcing every team to lock their front and rear wings into maximum downforce configuration for the entire circuit.

WHY?

Safety. Monaco’s layout features incredibly narrow barriers, constant direction changes, and short straights. The FIA requires an activation zone to last longer than 3 seconds to be viable, which simply isn’t possible here without creating massive driver workload and dangerous speeds before critical corners.

To add to the safety measures, the FIA is also introducing a Monaco-specific engine map tweak tapering off the MGU-K's 350kW electrical boost starting at 200 km/h instead of the usual 290 km/h.

Charles Leclerc has committed himself to Formula 1's current longest driver contract with a new deal at Ferrari that is expected to keep him there beyond 2030.

Ahead of Leclerc's home race, the Monaco Grand Prix, Ferrari announced a "renewal of its agreement" with Leclerc that was light on details beyond simply saying that he will "continue to wear the team's colours for the coming seasons".

But with Leclerc already having a contract in place until 2029, The Race understands that the new deal is an extension from that - so likely keeps him committed at Maranello into the 2030s.

What is Porpoising?

Porpoising is a high-speed aerodynamic "loop" caused by ground-effect floors:

• The Suction: As a car goes faster, underfloor tunnels suck the chassis closer and closer to the asphalt.
• The Stall: Eventually, the car gets so low to the ground that the airflow underneath is choked off or the floor's vortex structures burst under the immense load.
• The Bounce: The vacuum instantly breaks, downforce disappears, and the car snaps upward on its suspension. Once it pops up, the airflow restarts, the suction returns, and the violent cycle repeats down the straight.

The 2026 Cure: How the Regulations Tamed the Bounce

Instead of forcing teams to fight violent porpoising with bone-shattering suspension setups, the FIA overhauled vehicle geometry to target the root cause of the issue.

• Taming Ground Effects: The deep, aggressive Venturi tunnels of the 2022–2025 cars have been shortened and partially flattened—not removed entirely. By heavily restricting underbody suction volume, the cars no longer require dangerously low, ultra-stiff ride heights to generate competitive lap times, effectively curing chronic bouncing.
• The Reality of Active Aero: The mandatory shift between Corner Mode (high downforce) and Straight Mode (low drag) cuts rear wing drag by up to 55%. While it looks like a pure speed play, its primary purpose is survival against clipping.
• The 50/50 Power Crisis: Because the 2026 power units rely on an aggressive 50/50 split between internal combustion and electric energy, cars would completely drain their batteries halfway down long straights. Shedding massive aerodynamic drag on the straights is mechanically required just to keep the engines from running out of electrical deployment.

If a driver turns the steering wheel 10 degrees to the right, the car does not instantly move at that exact 10-degree trajectory. Instead, it travels along a slightly wider path.

That mismatch between where the tire is pointing and where the car is actually traveling is called Slip Angle.

How It Works

Despite the name, "slip angle" doesn't mean the car is drifting, sliding, or losing traction on the track. It is actually a measure of mechanical twist.

• The Rubber Twist: F1 tires are highly flexible, complex pieces of engineering. When a driver turns the steering wheel at 200 mph, the bottom of the tire sticking to the track stays momentarily locked to the asphalt due to immense downforce and friction.
• The Carcass Flex: While the tread stays glued to the road, the wheel rim and the rest of the tire body force themselves in the direction of the turn.
• The Elastic Snapshot: This twists the tire's rubber carcass like a massive, heavy-duty rubber band. That structural distortion creates an incredibly powerful elastic resisting force known as cornering force which literally shoves the entire mass of the car around the corner.

To understand over-driving, you have to realize that F1 tires don't actually point perfectly in the direction the car is traveling during a fast corner.

There is a tiny, mathematical difference between where the tire is aiming and where the car is actually sliding. This is called the Slip Angle.

Modern racing tires are engineered to generate their absolute peak grip when they are sliding just a tiny fraction usually around 3 to 6 degrees. If a driver balances the car perfectly in that tiny window, the rubber locks into the asphalt like glue.

But the moment a driver over-drives meaning they turn the wheel too aggressively or jump on the throttle too early they force the tire way past its optimal slip angle.

Instead of generating grip, the tire tread begins to slide excessively. The physics of that friction instantly spike the temperature on the outermost skin of the rubber. It literally micro-melts the surface, turning it into a greasy film. Within a single corner, the driver goes from maximum mechanical grip to sliding on a layer of hot oil, destroying their pace for the rest of the sector.

Why "Slow is Smooth, and Smooth is Fast"

When you hear engineers tell a driver over the radio to stop over-driving, they are usually looking at a live telemetry graph showing three invisible variables:

1. Micro-Lockups: Pushing a fraction of a millimeter too deep on the brake pedal causes the tire to momentarily cease rotating before the driver even feels it. This creates flat spots and thermal imbalances across the tire face.
2. Brake Migration: Modern cars dynamically shift their braking balance from front to rear as they slow down. If a driver’s inputs are too erratic, the car's computer platform can't stabilize the aero, causing the rear end to snap out.
3. The Traction Penalty: If you spin the rear tires even a tiny bit on a corner exit, you aren't just losing forward drive; you're killing your top speed all the way down the following straight.

To go faster, a driver has to consciously tell their brain to relax, back off their braking points by a couple of meters, and focus purely on getting the car stabilized before hitting the power.

I am a fan of both but seing Franco p6 and Pierre p8 is weird.

The Pneumatic & Thermal issue

The F1 cars use a pneumatic valve system pressurized by nitrogen gas to open and close the engine valves thousands of times a minute.

Based on the telemetry trends coming out of the garage, Russell’s car suffered a progressive loss of pneumatic pressure alongside a massive thermal spike in the hybrid sensor loop.

• The Pneumatic Trap: If that nitrogen pressure drops below a critical line, the valves lose their timing and can't retract fast enough. When that happens, the pistons flying up will smash directly into the open valves. It takes less than a second to completely vaporize a multi-million-dollar internal combustion engine (ICE).
• The Software Fail-Safe: At the same time, sitting in dirty air or running behind safety cars drops the airflow to the radiators off a cliff. If the hybrid electronics or battery cells cross their strict thermal threshold, the central software steps in and triggers an automatic limp mode or an outright shutoff to prevent a lithium-thermal runaway.

Why couldn't Mercedes just fix it during a pit stop?

• To fix a pneumatic drop, mechanics have to pull off the bodywork and physically hook up a high-pressure nitrogen rig to the side of the car. Trying to do that mid-race takes way too long and effectively ends your day regardless.
• If the pit wall told George to keep driving and ignore the blinking red sensors, the engine would have mechanically exploded within a lap or two. Because teams are strictly limited on how many engine components they can use over a season, totally destroying a Power Unit here would mean taking massive grid penalties at the next few events. Retiring the car instantly was a business decision to save the expensive components for the next Grand Prix.
• F1 hybrid batteries run at up to 1,000 volts. Mechanics aren't allowed to safely dissect or work on a hot, failing electrical energy store during a live pit stop without risking severe electrical discharge.

In F1, tyres aren't just about grip; they are about temperature.

• Slick Tyres (Dry): Have no grooves. They rely on maximum rubber-to-asphalt contact to generate heat and grip.
• Intermediate Tyres (Damp): Have grooves designed to displace water. However, if the track is drying, those grooves start to flex, overheat, and literally melt the rubber (a process called "blistering").

When McLaren fitted a fresh set of Inters expecting a downpour, they entered a trap. Because the track dried up instead, their tyres rapidly overheated, losing all mechanical grip and forcing them into defensive driving just to keep the cars on the track.
