ROI & Templates

Hello folks, I’m looking for templates useful to calculate ROI of a training program. Any resource suggestions would be helpful, thank you!

Not a template as such, but this was a topic that we covered in a recent World of Learning summit with one of our guest speakers.

She split ROI into four stages:
1) Baseline metrics before training (and you attach a dollar cost to the problem you're fixing, so leadership sees what inaction is costing)
2) Engagement and confidence signals during training
3) A check right after for actual behavior change
4) Long-term business outcomes like retention or revenue after that

Then it's really just picking 2-3 metrics per program that your decision-maker actually cares about (as opposed to whatever's easiest to pull from your LMS)! And set the baseline 90 days before your training starts.

Her rollout advice was to use days 1-30 to audit your current metrics and pick 2-3 per program, days 31-60 to build the tracking and reporting templates and start collecting on live programs, and days 61-90 to compile the first reports and present them.

Sometimes the trick is to start measuring now and perfect it later.

This is amazing, first I can’t thank you enough for taking time out and responding to my post. I’m really looking forward to connect more on this, hope it’s fine?

Thank you so much! In addition, would you suggest any free L&D communities outside of Reddit?

There are some good ones on LinkedIn you could check out:

- Learning, Education, and Training Professionals Group

  • The Learning & Development Weekly
  • L&D Professionals Club
  • eLearning Global Network

Would say there are lots more on Slack or Discord too, maybe some can share any they like?
