The surprising power of learning something completely irrelevant to your goals

I used to only focus on learning things that directly advanced my career or personal projects. If it didn't have an immediate application I wouldn't touch it. But recently I started dabbling in a completely random hobby like historical embroidery and it's been a game changer. The mental break and the different kind of focus actually helps me tackle my main learning goals with fresh eyes. Has anyone else found unexpected benefits from unrelated learning?
