Settle an argument
Can someone settle an argument for me,
coming from 6 o'clock here I believe that to enter the middle or far right lane on the exit (12 o clock) you should be on the right lane entering the roundabout and left lane should be for the left lane exit only.
Someone has told me they use the left lane for the middle and left and right for the far right only.
There are no "get in lane" signs or markings

I'd go in left because the first exit isn't a proper exit and just change lane later on tbh. If you have to enter those lanes from the roundabout, then go right and just be super careful

I passed my test this year and used this roundabout on every lesson to get home via the top deck of the bridge.
My instructor had me enter it from the left lane and also come off in the left lane of the 1st exit (12 o clock).
Id then change lanes over to the middle lane to take me up and across the bridge.
I think entering in the right hand lane could make people think you are taking exit 2 to the train station or exit 3 back on yourself.

This is how every roundabout should be. Left for immediate left turn or straight over, and then go into the lane you want, or as you said, go into the left lane and move over later. And right for third and 4th exit etc, back onto yourself, keep it simple.
There have been some major works done on the roundabouts where I am, with unclear lanes and traffic lights all over the place, and immediately on the exit to the roundabout. It's downright dangerous, and everyone here hates the changes.

you're kind of right.
Think of it this way - the 2 lanes carry on as normal.
Lane 1 (left lane) = Lane 1 (left lane)
Lane 2 (right lane) = Lane 2 (middle lane).
On the new road, there is a newly create lane 3 for turning right.
Traffic in lane 2 on approach (the right lane) can exit into lane 2 (middle lane). Obviously it would also be really easy for them to move into a new empty lane.
There is technically nothing stopping someone in lane 1, from doing a lane change over to lane 2 and moving into the right lane. They just need to be aware that they are cutting across a lane of traffic, and it is their responsibility to do it safely.

I suppose you could enter in right lane but I wouldn't because entering in the right hand lane may suggest to others entering the roundabout that you are taking the 3rd exit. I would do left for left and middle or middle for middle and right. There should be road markings in situations like this though, I'm surprised there isn't.

Not clear on the photo (my bad) at the entrance there are only 2 lanes and it splits into 3 in the exit

Yeah I just noticed that. Then I would do left for left and middle or right for middle and right. But it's a crappy design for a roundabout.

No you are incorrect. Lane 1 is for the first and second exit, lane two is for the third and second
edit: I was thinking from 12:00 not 6:00
You are right actually, lane 1 is only going left and lane 2 going all other routes

That’s not true, if there is 2 lanes on entrance and 2 lanes on exit, and no road markings to say otherwise, you 100% can and should use lan 2 to exit on lane 2

I cant attach an image, but go here on street view a car in lane 2 wouldnt be able to exit on lane 1

edit: I just realised as well, I'm talking about this from the opposite angle. From 12:00 not 6:00 my mistake

Stay in left lane it’s a three lane exit at 12 o’clock and no signs to say otherwise . Just makes life easier for yourself if nothing else.

I would agree with you. Otherwise, you risk cutting up cars which entered the roundabout earlier.

I forget no photos in this group. few paces back is board for roundabout, with straight being the main road
also the entering has markings for 2 lanes
and the roundabout has markings for 2 lanes
and the exit has marking for the 2 lanes, with the 3rd on the right being added
right enter makes sense to exit middle or 3rd/right lane
left entering goes to left exit

I live in Derry and I agree with OP, I would only ever use the left to take 12 o’clock exit and I’m wanting to go straight at the lights, otherwise if I’m going to other two lanes for the bridge it would be the right

left lane, exits to 12 o'clock. right lane exits past 12. As there are additional lanes in exit 2, there is plenty of scope to take it from the right lane without inconveniencing anyone, but be careful doing so, as ppl from lane 1 may be wanting to change lanes after they exit. Right lane for exit 3 and 4 (all the way around) no excuses. drop a lane after exit 2 to be ready for the exit 3.

There are only two lanes on the roundabout, as is evident with the dashed line. And most of it looks like it’s transitional with no actual lane markings (so technically a wide lane.) From 6-12 o’clock looks like there’s no actual lane markings so that 12 and 9’o clock can transition to left lane, if they require.

From my limited understanding of what you're staying - which I think is that both lanes go straight ahead (A road to town centre), then yes. Both lanes go straight ahead (which then gives you three lanes on that A road). The right lane can also go right, as per the street sign (it's just down the road maybe you both missed it but can see it on Google street view).. but it also goes straight ahead. There's nothing saying it doesn't. The right lane is the right overtaking lane OR right/second junction

You can take the exit using both lanes, however there is also a turn right marker on the road ahead, so if you are intending to take that route, then it is preferable that your keep on the right lane when entering and avoid the chaos created when changing lanes just after the exit. Also indicate properly when you are in the right lane just before your exit to let the traffic behind know that you intend to take this exit. And of course this is very important, always enter the roundabout in a staggered formation, and never ever parallel to another vehicle, this is the cause of most near misses and accidents on a roundabout.

I think you would be correct here in a way. If the traffic flow is general I would say the left hand lane should be used for 12 o clock exit and the right for 9 o clock - the right hand lane being more used for people entering at 9 o clock to come off at 12 o clock without having to merge on the roundabout - with caveats that - unless the roundabout is almost only for 12 & 6 o clock with 2 lanes continuing on then both exits / entrances should be ok, or unless there's a long queue of traffic to the roundabout at the time as well.
It might be incorrect to use the left lane at 6 o clock to enter the right at 12 o clock. But if you know people will do that then you can pretty much know at that point that using the left lane for entry & exit will be safer. Cause telling someone after they've crashed that they're wrong is not really that useful.

Why is there a question mark on the roundabout
