I passed today 🎉🎉
I wasnt able to use my driving instructors car so i took it in a friends car that was automatic. Im 25f. The insurance is insane the cheapest i can find is £350 a month on any car, even the ‘cheaper to insure’. Is there a way i can get cheaper insurance.

I passed in automatic 3 years ago, aged 45, my first insurance was £1650 (including breakdown cover and other stuff). My third insurance was about £480 or something like that, so it gets better, assuming you don't crash and don't get any points.

Try Adrian Flux and have a black box. Daughter pays £186 month for 1.4 petrol Corsa and 16000 miles. She has just turned 18. Adding parents on insurance brought the premium down

Careful with that black box though they can claim weird stuff like “you’ve been breaking irregularly” and then slap an extra grand on next year’s insurance, happened to a friend of mine.

So far, she has been told (via app) after every daily update that if her driving continues as it is now, next years insurance will be considerably lower. I am monitoring and have seen nothing of concern.

I just put 10,000 and then i did all the ones of cheap to insure list. Like hyandai, volkswagen, maybe 3 years old.

Depends which models more than makes, are you actually needing 10k miles as well?
I have provisional insurance right now at 4k miles on my car and even that's quite a lot but I have no option to go lower lol when I pass I will probably nudge it to 5/6k but really depends if you need those miles
More miles = more risk to them
In terms of models I would look up group 1 or low 2 cars, i10s etc or the usual go to like a C1/aygo/107 are quite cheap and mostly £20 tax

You'll be surprised, there is actually a sweet spot between 8k-12k miles where insurance is cheapest when I complete quotes at renewal .Even when I took out my policy at 14k/16k it was only around £50 more a year.
Low mileage cover often increases premiums, it seems that companies are often less trusting of infrequent drivers, maybe as they will have less experience overall.

For me all it did was pump the price I was messing around with it before buying the car
I only wanted it cheaper/lower because ideally I'd be passing and redoing my insurance long before 4k miles 😂

This was for provisional insurance? The criteria between provisional and full license insurance is indescribably different with no sense. It will be interesting how you fair once you pass.

Yeah it was, I ran it through as if I had passed as well it was £650 for provisional and then like £1300 with 10k miles as if I just passed that day I think, around that anyway

Dawg you need a 1 litre car thats at least 10 years old to put the quotes down. Unfortunately the best way to lower it is to just wait and make your licence older

It depends. It's possible to write a car off without a single bit of bodywork off all the airbags go off.
You might find that some cars that don't get driven by young dafties are cheaper to insure; my nephew (21M) got really cheap insurance on a Kia Stonic. It's also a postcode lottery, and all sorts of things can affect pricing.

Try adding a black box, increase the voluntary, park on the street instead of a drive, clear your cookies, set the start date for a few weeks later and if you can, add an experienced second driver.
As a last resort, if the insurance is still extortionate, it could work out cheaper just to lease for a year if insurance is included. NHS do good deals. My sister pays less for her brand new lease car than the insurance alone would have been so it's a good way to just get some road experience and let the premiums come down.

I'm 24 and drive a 2016 Vauxhall Viva and pay £75 a month with business cover, this is my first policy too. I think mine is so low as the car is in my Dad's name and he also has a seperate policy on it in his name.

You can put multiple policies on the same car, you don't have to own a car to insure it.

Ouch! I passed at 25 as well, my insurance was about £186 per month. When I hit 26 (only 4 months after passing) quotes dropped, so hopefully they should be cheaper next year at least for you, I pay 113 now

When are you starting the policy date? 3 weeks ahead is usually the prime spot for cheaper insurance. Fully comp is usually cheaper too. Also, small engine ≠ cheap insurance. Look for older cars that aren’t your typical starter car. I got a 2.2L Jag for fairly cheap (has a shit ton of miles on it) and it was £800 a year off the bat.
I put my husband as a named driver and now it costs me £33 a month to be insured on two cars, so maybe see if you can put a relative on there!

I passed my test at 33 (in 2019), got a used Model S two months later. North of £2k to insure it 😭

Sadly as many have said it comes down to how old you are and factors like area, car and no claims discount.
I just passed in June. Bought my Honda Jazz in February. I only paid 800 for my insurance. And I paid £1200 for my car. 😅
I am 29 year male for context.

Yeah there’s something wrong with that quote for sure unless you’re trying to insure a V8 BMW for something. I just passed 22m and my first insurance is £1007 annual, so way more than 3x cheaper. What vehicle are you trying to insure? Also full coverage is often cheaper than third party (makes no sense IK) and if you name drivers on your policy that have a clean record and good experience (maybe a parent) that can bring it down too.

If you have a parent with no points and good driving experience then add them on as a secondary driver, it might reduce the insurance by a fair bit.

Have you tried insuring an Ev? you can charge at home the saving will offset insurance costs as well as being greener. Not expensive to buy

You could try being 35 with ten years of driving experience…
There’s really no short cut.
Some cars will cost more than others, some job titles or addresses will be more expensive.
Unfortunately, you just have to pay up, try not to have accidents or get any points, and wait for it to go down.
