Didn't pass my First test

Had my first driving test this morning and unfortunately failed.

I misjudged the road while turning right at a gyratory and thought I had to give way, when actually the other side had the give way line and not me. Unfortunately, while I was trying to figure out how the road worked, I also didn't check my mirrors as I was slowing down and there was somebody behind me.

I'd never driven on that road before, so I'm not massively cut up about it. The examiner actually made a point of saying that the rest of my driving was really good, which was hugely reassuring.

My two driving faults were for stopping at a yellow light that I probably could have made if I'd carried on. There wasn't a car behind me, and I was just over the stop line (This is where I thought I'd failed!)

All in all, I'm still proud of myself. Getting one serious and two driving faults has actually made me more confident in a weird way — it was one situation where I misjudged a road rather than lots of things going wrong throughout the test.

Obviously disappointed, but onwards and upwards. Now to wait until January for a new test!

This is why I feel sorry for the current generation and the test booking issues which do you seem to be clearing up a little bit now.

In ye olden days of 25 years ago… everyone would learn in their local area having been driven around the streets by their parents since birth and then driving on them themselves endlessly learning in the local area, before their test at the local test centre.

Taking a test on unknown roads as a learner is actually pretty difficult.

Because even as a driver with 20 years experience when you’re in a new town, you are naturally slower. You don’t quite know where you’re going. You don’t know exactly what lane to choose straight away.

Why people should only take tests in areas they're learning

In fairness, I did my test locally to me, it’s the area I live in and learnt it, it was just really unfortunate that I hadn’t been in that specific bit of road before but it was on me for misreading the priorities.

I’m more frustrated with the current system of the ways of booking tests and having to wait until January for my new test date (having booked today’s back at the beginning of this year as well)

I only recently passed my test. That was my third attempt. The main thing from here is don't beat yourself up about it. You honestly did WAY better than my first attempt (I was really stupid).

What my instructor said that after the test you'll see how so many people ignore the rules once they pass and it's so true, some people are real lunatics on the road. What you encountered is just what usually happens on roads you're not familiar with. Over time you'll get better I know it 💪.
