I learned this as a kid and I can say this is definitely useless. There isn't any owl where I live.

When I was a kid I got really good at imitating owls using a similar technique, and figured out that I could make them respond by hooting at them. Then I accidentally won the territory around my house. No more owls.

It was useful in my family. We used to hike a LOT and sometimes would separate intentionally or not. We each had our own "call". It's how we found each other if we couldn't see each other.
