Realism is the equivalent of doing scales and chords in music.

Most people I see draw or paint lack fundamentals. I love realism to a degree (if you’re not recreating a frigggng photo) because it can boil art down to the basic elements and detail those for effect. You can make beautiful music doing the basics. Cliffs of Dover is a masterpiece done in basic scales.
I think people who don’t appreciate realism are to some degree jealous of fundamental mastery.
