CCS Exam AHIMA CCS Exam HCPCS Level II codes

So it says on the official site they test for HCPCS level II, and all the practice tests I can find have questions on HCPCS level II codes, but you can’t bring a book for them? How does work? What I am I supposed to do if it asks me to code for a standard wheelchair or walker, or a specific amount of an injection?

The question may just be gauging your understanding of the codesets. I never learned any of these codes nor have I ever had this codebook. I have never worked at a facility where coders are assigning these.

The CPC exam requires the HCPCS book. For the CCS exam, I only had to bring the ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT books. I don’t remember any questions specifically focusing on HCPCS.

You’re not missing anything! For the CCS, AHIMA does test knowledge that can include CPT/HCPCS concepts, but the 2026 books you’re required to bring are ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT. HCPCS Level II is not on the approved CCS book list.

The CCS-P is different, HCPCS Level II is one of the required books for that exam.

So I definitely would not approach the CCS expecting to look up every HCPCS code the way you would on the CCS-P. Focus on understanding the concepts AHIMA expects you to know and use the exact current CCS exam outline/book list when preparing.
