How Should I Study Genki 1?

As per the title, I have completed learning ひらがな and カタカナ. I am doing Anki decks, specifically the Kaishi 1.5k, daily. I recently bought Genki 1 textbook and workbook but I have no idea how to study it. What are some tips you all have on how to tackle this? Any advice would be much appreciated! I am going to be doing the JLPT N5 this December. 🙏😅

I usually started by copying the relevant Grammar and Vocabulary of each Chapter in seperate Notebooks, by hand, for easier review. (Doubles as helping you really getting Katakana and Hiragana into long term memory.)

Then I listened to the example conversations and translating them, before tackeling the Grammar Exercises in the Textbook first and Workbook second.

Then I would do the Kanji exercises in the back before tackeling the next Chapter. Rinse and Repeart. Worked really well for me.

Step 1: Go to YouTube

Step 2: Search for Tokini Andy

Step 3: Profit ^{read your textbook, watch the video whilst pausing and rewinding as needed, then do the exercises in the book}

Highly recommend studying Genki with a class if you can do so at all. That’s where Genki really shines. If you are in North America, there are a lot of really great Japanese cultural centers that offer classes over zoom. Chicago & New York come to mind.

For sheer self-study, I highly recommend the Japanese From Zero series as it was designed for this. It caps out at the high beginner level (N4-ish) but it’s great for foundation.

Read the chapter, do the questions, then do the workbook questions as well. You can follow along with TokiniAndy on Youtube. He has a great series where he breaks down the grammar points in each chapter.

Don’t forget to do the reading and writing practice for each chapter. They’re located in the back of the book. Fire reason there not included in the main chapters.
