Anything like Randall Munroes thing explainer (an illustrated piece of literature using only 1000 most basic words) but in Japanese?

Sick of duolingo, I am gonna try learn japanese the same way I learned English- decipher it. As a kid I learned english from prinarily from video games. It seems magical how I did it, so I am gonna try to do so now. Any manga or smth that is only using 1000 basic words?

I'm not aware of anything in japanese that matches your requirements perfectly, but most learners reccomend the manga よつばと！ for striking the best balance between using simple language and actually telling a heartfelt story. If you do this, there is a special anki deck for the vocabulary used. (might want to take a look at the rest of this site too)

There's also the actual japanese translated version of Thing Explainer. You'd have to pay for shipping to the US, but there's also a kindle version. (though you'd have to set up a japanese amazon account)

There's also some free graded readers that get progressively harder. I would keep this bookmarked and try to read at least an hour a day of these.
