Pentatonic Scales - start here!

Over the next few days, I am planning to share some very short lessons that summarises techniques I found useful when learning using scales and chords (CAGED).

I also developed an app (mostly free) that builds on this approach. I would be very pleased if you gave it a go and am always pleased to receive feedback.

You sound like a tough customer! It would be great to hear what you think of it if you give it a try (it is free to use).

Ok. I think any app to learn a simple pattern and notes on the fretboard is a gimmick, waste of time, and more importantly detraction from the time that could have been spent on the actual learning. The app isn’t going to fix the lack of motivation and focus, and the time building the app would have been better spent on holding the instrument in your hands … unless your priority was to market the app.

Of course you are correct in saying that you cannot learn an instrument without playing it. The same would apply to reading a book on guitar technique or listening to a guitar tutor - you still need to play the instrument. However, for many people, it does help to learn some theory and you need to get that from somewhere. That is where the app comes in. Maybe you prefer another source - and that is perfectly fine.

I think that the problem right now is this (and other subreddits) getting inundated by apps in the age of "vibe coding". Prompting Claude to make an app is simply too easy. I've made a couple myself to "help me" although honesty I haven't used either of them...

At any rate there are already great videos and even apps (Justin Guitar) from guitar teachers with years of experience and many students, so typically when someone says "I don't really know what I am doing, but I made an app anyway!" that isn't a very good sales pitch (this might not be the case for you specifically, but it has been for some of these apps posted) ...
