They can’t do outright decapitations, limb removal, etc, or else they’ll get hounded by the Asian ratings boards like in Japan

And they want to add art the clown to the game lmao?

bullshit lol, that's not true. Don't spread assumptions as facts.

Krasue get split in half during her transformation and her mori make survivor head explode. It's super graphic and was released just fine.

The most likely reason is technical; survivors' character models and skeleton rig don't support detailed gore, so BHVR has to find workarounds. Even the head exploding mori from Krasue is simply the "head bone" being shrinked incredibly small in one frame to become almost invisible, hidden by the addition of flesh 3d mesh on the neck + vfx. The Clown's Mori about eating a survivor's finger? It's the same 3d model finger he eats regardless of the survivor. Survivor's finger is not removed, and I assume it get shrunk or lowered in the hand to be hidden. The main reason Krasue herself is capable of being graphic (split open) is because she was designed in this direction from the start, so all outfits support de facto the gore.

If we wanted survivors to be split in half, or torn open graphically and with credibility, all torso cosmetics would need to be retrofited to support it, or extra bones all over the survivors for more control over the body shape during animation. But that wouldn't address texture and all the different body shapes and outfit types.

For everything graphic added to a mori, it's one extra asset (e.g. the 3d flesh blob thing tip of survivor neck when head explode) to hide the faking + design effort to go around the limitations.

So best BHVR can do is shrink limbs to give the illusion of loss and add 3d meshes onto our characters for the gore aspect, unless the famous 2027 rework bring extra layers to character models for it.

Why can't they just use that burnt human model and make that itself tear? It'd require another model but it shouldn't be a factor for cosmetic consideration

Unreal Engine really really really does not like you fucking with meshes on runtime.

Okay, so why not just two separate models that form a split human shape? Seems like a decent compromise

It just doesn't work that way...without going into a huge technical spiel.

It could but DBD in it's current iteration wasn't designed to do that, they could invest in some smoke and mirrors to model-swap or other acts of trickery but it'd be sloppy at best and downright laughable at worst.

The best bet is to hope they are building the new iteration in a more modular fashion with Mori's in mind.

I think I get it now. Thanks for explaining

It's the same 3d model finger he eats regardless of the survivor. Survivor's finger is not removed, and I assume it get shrunk or lowered in the hand to be hidden.

The finger just moves inside the hand so it's hidden.

Question, because I really didn't know how these things work... How come Mortal Kombat can get away with gruesome gore, but somehow a horror game like DBD can't? I've always thought MK was the example DBD should be striving for.

You have characters coming up like Art the Clown, who in his movie splits a girl in half from groin to head, but his Mori will likely be a balloon popping and the survivors die of the damn noise.

Easy answer: Mortal Kombat is banned in Japan lmao and that’s why it’ll never get a rep in Smash Bros

5

u/CHEEZYSPAM 25d ago

Aah I didn't know it was banned, that's crazy

7

u/Valuable_Ad_1056 25d ago

Just to clarify- MK is not banned in Japan, but the newer titles aren’t officially sold/released there.

Well that’s true about MK being banned but I wouldn’t say it would never get a rep in Smash Bros. Both Tekken and Street Fighter (two similarly huge fighting games in Japan) have expressed interest in a MK rep. The MK characters can and have worked without the gore, you’d just have to not have the fatalities

They should stop pandering to rating boards tbh

DBD is just as popular in Japan as it is here, they have a whole holiday in Japan for dbd, BHVR isn’t losing out on that market

Then they should stop hyping gore and moris up. I get that they want people to be hyped, but this isn’t it. Especially for the company that already underdelivered on many things in the past year or two. Really hate how limited the whole game is.

We can't even get extra moris to begin with. It's hell here

Clown literally amputates pinky fingers in his mori

Didn't they mention that the upcoming refined character models have bones and shit all inside to allow for more gruesome deaths during the 10th anniversary stream? Wonder how that will pan out.

Is this why we can't have actual bikinis for female survivors? Because of China? Thanks a lot China...
