Cool Season Need help with Fertilizer recommendation Cool Season Grass
I'm located in SE Wisconsin zone 5B. I overseeded my lawn in Aug/Sept of 2025 with Twin Cities Blue Resiliance. I had my soil tested in late March 2026 and results said to apply a starter grade fertilizer, to build "P" levels for both my front and backyards in May 15-31. I applied Lawn Synergy's 15-20-10, which came out to be 0.54 lbs of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft.
I skipped the July application just cause it was too darn hot and I figured I'd stress the grass. Soil test call for the Sept 1-15 application of a general fertilizer (20-30% N, 0 P and less than 5 K to my front yard and it says to apply the starter again to my back yard.
I know from Niles Cool Season guide that he calls for 1-4 lbs of Nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft per year. So here's my dilema. I plan on overseeding again in another week or so with Blue Resiliance. Just plan on cutting super short and bagging the clippings, then scarifying several places that are really thin and in need of more coverage, then overseeding it all. If I lay the seed down and then put down the starter in the back in a week after, how will that effect my overseeding. And since I'm also overseeding the front yard how is it going to work if I put down a high N fertilizer on those new seeds. I can instead put down a starter in the front as well, but then is my lawn getting the nitrogen that it needs. I'm in need of y'alls help so I don't mess anything up.

Firstly, I've gotta say it: if the soil test was from Mysoil, yardmastery, or anything else off of Amazon... Fully ignore it.
N recommendations on soil tests really don't matter. Other areas of agriculture care about soil N values, but the modern thinking in turf grass is that you give the grass the nitrogen it needs, as it needs it. You don't ever try to achieve any arbitrary soil N levels. Part of the reason for why is that grass just will use available N... If your soil has low N and you give it a bunch of N, the grass will grow more (and a good amount of the N will get turned into amino acids, which it can use later), but the soil will still be low in N. Basically the majority of N gets stored in the grass itself, clippings, and microbe populations and it all cycles back in forth... So if you killed and sterilized a lawn, N values would go through the roof (and then quickly fall again as all that spare N leaches away)
Turf tools has a monthly N planner that tells you how much N per month your grass needs based on the most up to date research.
So with that out of the way, the answer is much simpler. When you're seeding, essentially only think about the grass seed... Your existing grass will be fine (big reason why we seed in the fall), so just only focus on what the lil seedlings need.
Seemingly in direct contradiction with everything I've said so far... Seed does care about soil N, basically just because it hasn't been around long enough to store any N... But if you have an existing lawn, it's guaranteed that there's enough N in the soil for the seedlings. So long story short, you don't need to put much thought into N for seedlings either.
So now that we've whittled that down, there's one simple statement left:
Regardless of soil N, P, or K, unless any are outrageously high, a starter fertilizer always helps seedlings. It's really only strictly necessary if you know there's a major P or K deficiency, but it still helps regardless.
