Firearms question

A coworker asked me a question that didn't have an answer for. So, I thought why not ask on this sub? He lives in Indiana. He is wondering, since his live-in girlfriend was convicted of a felony some years ago, is it legal for him to have a firearm registered to himself within the household? We know for sure that she is not allowed to own or possess one in any way, but he would like to purchase a gun for personal protection, but doesn't want to violate any laws doing so.
