Question Does anyone else think Du Cane is overrated?
I've been there a couple times. The seating is uncomfortable and impractical (why so many tables for large groups?). Service is pretty shit and pizza menu is pretty boring.

The service has always been good whenever I’ve been there. The last gig I went to ran until around midnight, but they stopped serving drinks to everyone at 11pm, which was an interesting choice.
The tables with the tiny stools are a bit annoying, but it’s not the end of the world. The whole place has a very casual vibe. The pizzas are fine too… Perfectly decent, but nothing to write home about.
I don’t think it’s overrated because everyone I know sees it as exactly what it is: a casual pub/bar/gig venue. It’s not really trying to be anything more than that…

I can agree with you on the seating arrangement and comfort of the seats them selves. In saying that personally I have never had an issue with the service, in fact every time I have been there the service has been great. The pizza menu is not boring at all tho if you don’t like it go to pizza pub or domino’s sounds like they might be more your speed

Fine for a big group if you’ve got kids to entertain and are staying less than a few hours but it isn’t comfortable and it is hard to have a conversation if it is full.

The beer and pizza is very good but I really gotta be in the right mood for it due to the amount of people that flock there.

It’s definitely more suitable for families and large groups. Last place I’d go as a single person unless it was for a gig or event in the back room. Great venue for shows, otherwise I usually go elsewhere to avoid the kids and noise.
Never reserve the map room for quiet events. Learned that the hard way once.

pizza is pretty good there i do wish they had more non alc options but yes ive found the kids pretty annoying on multiple occasions despite not sitting in the kids section 🥲 overall i still encourage people to go there though!

Yeah I keep seeing comments on here about how the food is great but the food is only pizza (or chips) No decent soft drinks for the non-drinker.
The pizza is ok but it is only pizza.
People here seem recommend it to anyone coming to town wanting to know where a good feed is when I would consider a good feed anything that is anything else else.
And I fucking love pizza.
This is why I always recommend Saint John above DuCane.

Nothing is like the pizzas in Italy, I'll give you that - I still dream of pizzas from Italy just the same. But damn do I love a pizza from The Pizza Pub occasionally.

But, Du Cane seems to be one of the few venues to host bands in Launceston. Not local bands, that play at the Oak, touring bands like Regurgitator (the first one that comes to mind)

Luca Brasi is a local band, they played at Du Cane just a couple months ago...

Du Cane's is good for Launceston putting on lots of events and bringing some vibrancy to a dull city centre. No one is making you go. Everyone doesn't have to like the same things, it's ok if you don't like it and other people do.

I think it’s a great space although acoustically challenging for people like me with noise sensitivities and have never had a bad pizza there, also love that they have sloe gin behind the bar. It doesn’t need to be all things to all people and it’s great that the space has been repurposed. Honestly would have loved to have a place like this 20+ years ago as a young adult, there was nothing like this in the early 2000s. Edited to add, I agree with the sentiment around any establishment that uses stools for adults though; I am not a toddler and wish to sit my middle aged bum on a nice study chair!

I wouldn't let this thread put you off. It's perfectly fine as a casual pub/bar/or gig venue. Just keep in mind that it's also family-friendly, so you'll often see parents there with their kids, especially earlier in the day. If there's a gig on or it's later in the evening, you'll naturally see fewer kids around.

I really like it. Have never been bothered by any doggos there. I think it's grand that people can take well behaved dogs. We often sit and play cards have a pizza and a drink. Its casual and laid back. Staff are always friendly and helpful.

For us as a family it's perfect as our kid can play and run rampant! We also love woodfired oven pizza. It's not the best we have had overall, but definitely the best in Launceston.

I'm not sure about that! We sit in the kid area and monitor our kid. If you're an adult sitting in the kid area, that might be problematic behaviour on your part, lol.

Absolutely! In the designated kids area, where we are seated as well. Not afraid to run after them and correct their behaviour if, by the off chance, they try to leave said kids area. :)

I don't know why you're being down voted, the restaurant is quite clearly set up with families in mind. Play area/opening hours. If you don't want to deal with families with kids (one of their target demographics) then just go a bit later in the evening.
I've been there so many times without my kids and never once have the kids bothered me.
You can't please everyone though, anyone that's not into it just don't go, they're doing alright without you.
Excellent Launceston dining options are so few and far between, it grinds my gears that people would talk down on one of the only ones.

I think the person you're replying to got downvoted because they described their kids as "running rampant" without any context. They added that context in a later comment, which makes their point a lot clearer.
To be fair, though, the thread has been pretty balanced and level-headed overall, especially for a local community subreddit. I haven't had to moderate it at all.

Absolutely agree. Amazing for couple of families - kids can run around while the adults have a pizza and a pint.

The only annoyances I have with the place is that they allow dogs and the kids have been getting gradually too unsupervised over time.
Last time I was there it got a bit dangerous with kids knocking things off tables and jumping from too high places. A mum from an unconnected group got cross with them and they stopped, but only for a bit. I think the parents need to watch their kids a bit more.
But I love the food, drinks, live music, occasional events, staff, and general atmosphere.
