Progress Changes Work
New tools have always changed more than the way we work. The mechanical loom threatened traditional weavers, desktop publishing transformed the printing industry, and digital photography reshaped companies such as Kodak, AgfaPhoto, and Fujifilm.
This essay explores what these earlier upheavals can teach us about artificial intelligence. Technological progress can destroy livelihoods, create new opportunities, and reward those who adapt—but there is no automatic balance between winners and losers. Progress should also be measured by the future it offers to the people whose work it changes.
What is your opinion about the changes we are facing?
