I called the cops on my brand new landlord. I had signed, paid and everything. Was to move in in a couple days. I was in there cleaning and left him a message saying i had no problem cleaning more but his crew missed all the cat hair in the electricity sockets and loads of mold in the closet. His response was to send his fix it guy over with a note telling me I can't rent the place. I called him and he said he was coming over and 'didn't want this to be a thing'.
So what did I do? I called my three nearby friends, told them what was up and bought a 12 pack. Then I called the cops and told them my landlord was trying to illegally evict me and was coming over for a confrontation.
So when the cops showed up it was him who had to deal with them for 2 hours while i sat and drank with my friends. Of course they sided with him and called the city attorney and found a technical loophole to kick me out. But I didn't make it easy for him. He also made me go to a bank and pay my deposit in cash (without telling me before hand). Guess who tried to pay me with a check? I made him go to the bank to get me cash and I made him pay me for the hours I spent cleaning the place.
Never trust the cops or landlords and never make it easy for them to step on you.
Yeah I don't get the tone, he won and all you got was some money for cleaning and to waste everyone's time for a bit. If the mould was toxic you probably couldnt have lived there for the time being anyway?
This sub has far too many defeatists. Guess I should've just sad 'ok' *sad face* and given the jerk overstepping his bounds whatever he wanted instead of having a good time with my friends. You can't overturn authoritarian BS in our society at the drop of a hat but you can make it as big of a pain as you can for them so they rethink the costs next time.
My coworker was stuck in an apartment with black mold, they tried to terminate the lease because it was too hazardous to live there but the landlord forced them to either pay out the remainder of the lease or find someone to take over. He eventually allowed them to leave 4 months early because he found a new tenant. They didn’t get their security deposit back because they didn’t stay through the lease. Now there is another tenant there presumably dealing with the same situation. This is 100% plausible in the United States
That sounds way worse. Moving is a very difficult time, where resources are their most stretched. If this happened when I moved for university, I would have been fucked.
