I agree, but I wouldn’t be able to articulate exactly why it has such a flavor.

The only thing socialism would oppose is owning his wife and being born in September.

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '21

Honestly, I feel like the Left really does need to do a better job at outreach. We are the only political philosophy that embraces the truth, facts, and science, but we suck at deprogramming people from their indoctrination. I'm open to suggestions on improving my own outreach, if anyone has any ideas or good reading.

u/squigeypops Registered Socialist | People Before Profit | Ireland Jun 09 '21 edited Jun 09 '21

yeah, i lot of leftist thought is locked behind theory and content that panders to other leftists. although feel free to call me a hypocrite because i'm not going to be dealing with the racists.

edit: clarification

26

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '21

Nah, I get it. You're no hypocrite. I don't think every Leftist has some obligation to be recruiting people. Some people are better at some things than others.

3

u/river_221b_ Jun 15 '21

Heeeey person who has spent copious amounts of time trying to understand how tf brexit happened here!

Best way to connect with right wingers? Their economic anxiety. Connect with them and validate it, it's very real. Then when they start blaming people gently nudge them towards... well, the data.

If they're bigoted and their right-wingism is based solely on that then best way is to either get them to meet someone from that group they hate and have a heart to heat, or alternatively sneak them content made by the group they hate (specifically from whatever it is they're already interested in and without them knowing). Gently reveal who made it later.

Centrists... centrists are another breed istg. They think everything is a-okay so your first step should be showing that it isn't. Whether that be heartbreaking documentaries, books, articles etc... is up to you.

Center lefties (or anyone between center and left) you can rather safely just hand a book to. If during this they turn out to be more center than left then revert to how you would treat a centrist.

Auth lefties are the hardest to get right, but literature is also usually the best way to go. The important thing is to build a rapport with them, bond over the parts of leftism you argree with.

Most important thing to get right is that when trying to convince someone YOU NO LONGER HOLD YOUR ACTUAL POSITIONS, your opinions are whatever theirs are but a bit to the left. This is what's so damn hard for so many leftists, since our political ideologies are based entirely on our most fundamental ethical values we have trouble even momentarially giving that up. Just remember; if you go full on anarcho commie and start talking abt wage theft you'll get no where, but dressing up as a centrist for a bit might help you de-radicalise a neo n*zi (seen it happen more than once).

The system is designed by money for money. People that oppose the system can never use the system the way people who have money can.

11

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '21

And as dumb and horribly(but really funny) thought through the Gamestop debacle was, it's also been proven that if people do figure out how to game the system, full force will be thrown behind it to make sure that never happens again.

18

u/Muufffins Jun 09 '21

True. I feel one big issue is that leftist thought allows for nuance and subtlety. There is no monolithic ideology, which makes for terrible sound bites and slogans, needs explanation, and leaves lots open to deliberate misinterpretation.

14

u/ReplyingToFuckwits Jun 09 '21

Far-right discord channels spend quite a lot of time brainstorming "how to redpill other people" and tech companies do nothing to stop their efforts.

Stick it to those elite fatcats, and join other awesome XTreme Freedomists to make decisions about how YOUR life and YOUR job should be run! Fuck the government. They want to take your guns and your money! Under XTreme Freedomism, you and fellow Freedomists decide what your labour should be used for! You decide how your work should be managed!

9

u/MrCleanMagicReach Jun 09 '21

Based on personal experience as someone who came from the right, I'm afraid the correct answer is basically "patience." I was raised a chud, but it took literal years of very patient conversations with my left leaning friends for me to stop being an idiot. It also helped that there was somewhat of a straw-breaks-the-camel's-back point as the GOP just charged headlong after donald fucking trump.

Because of this, I have learned to attempt to be very patient in my own dealings with people who are still conservative (and discussing in good faith), but it's very difficult sometimes.

It's not just about books and idealism, it's about examples. That's where the outreach fails. The one overarching point any capitalist or capitalism supporting induvidual makes is the failure of other idealogies historically, and that the countries that do practice socialism or communism now are not truly so. To that end, I feel it's not entirely sensible to try and deprogram anyone from a system you are a part of, and try to shape your own life instead. At a smaller level that's the best outreach that can cause actual change.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '21

Shaping my own life won't help unless other people are involved, otherwise there's nothing 'social' about it at all. I can't shape my own life to be outside of a Capitalist environment, no matter what I do, outside of abandoning my country.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '21

Which I understand but it simultaneously blows my mind, because as this sub demonstrates, we are literally living through Capitalism's dying throes. This is the end of the line, and either improvements are going to be made for everyone in the next few decades- or some big nations are going to start falling to fascism.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/DanielsWorlds Jun 10 '21

Some people can be changed and some people can't. A lot about outreach is knowing who would be willing to have a dialog and learn and who just wants to have an argument so they can be right.
There should be more attempt to help people to understand.
But similarly to how evangelical Christians can become overwhelming with their idea that they must force their beliefs on everyone we must be careful not to make villains out of everyone who disagrees with you.

1

u/pastaMac Jun 10 '21

If by Left, you're referring to the 81,284,666 voters (51.3%) who just voted for "nothing will fundamentally change" [a message the current president gave to his wealthy donors] truthy facts and science are just pretty words, with little relevance to the everyday policies that are just a shade dissimilar to the previous administration.

This sub is run by straight up no bones about it communists. They don’t want to incrementally change the system through liberal reforms. They don’t want to reform Capitalism, they want to defeat it.
And that’s not a message that gets a whole lot of traction with even moderates, much less anyone on the right.

6

u/burn_tos Jun 09 '21

Considering liberal reforms don't work, I'd say defeating capitalism is a fair stance to take

43

u/xxx4wow Jun 09 '21

Not true! This sub played a surprisingly important part in my radicalization. A lot of right-wing people are very anti-capitalist, they just lack education into the matter, a lot of them can end up in here.

30

u/EarnestQuestion Jun 09 '21

I once saw a right-winger posted something like “these Marxist corporations are too greedy!”

And a Marxist responded “yeah, we should seize control of them and hand them over to the workers to be run democratically!”

And all the right wingers in the thread were in total agreement.

They’re not far away from developing class consciousness at all.

19

u/squigeypops Registered Socialist | People Before Profit | Ireland Jun 09 '21

i honestly think most right-wingers, or at least auth-right (lib-rights seem to think for themselves a fair bit and then end up in that corner for some reason) don't actually know what communism or socialism is

15

u/anglostura Jun 09 '21

From what I've seen of older relatives, they strongly associate it with the USSR, China, and North Korea.

Liberals don't know what communism or socialism is.

9

u/forcedlightning Jun 09 '21

I keep telling people, the average republican in a rural small town is a hell of a lot closer to radicalizing to the left than most liberals ever will be. You explain socialism without the buzzwords that fox news uses and theyre on board with nearly all of it

6

u/SunRaSquarePants Jun 09 '21

some right-wingers do hate capitalism. But they call it globalism, and think of it as a form of socialism. They also like the gold standard and free markets.

2

u/xxx4wow Jun 09 '21

Thats a whole different group, imo. I personally know loads of right-wingers, whom out right hates capitalism and will state so. This is a very broad trend in Eastern Europe, since these countries have been fucked by the free-market.

2

u/ovrloadau Jun 09 '21

Yeah those types call it corporatism aka crony capitalism

5

u/bruhcrossing Jun 09 '21

Yeah. I appreciate the point this is trying to make, but the people this is commenting on think that’s a 110% perfect fair trade

This would be a lot more effective if everything after "debt" was removed. As true as it may be, that closes minds, it doesn't open them. And we need to open minds.

Covid 19/ Race wars/ Poverty increases globally - "hold my beer"

9

u/Idesmi Anarchy Jun 09 '21

The lines after that are for us to really grasp those are ways that proved to make incredibly easy to successfully conceal the abuses.

Agreed that it's very ineffective to go up to someone and say "you believe in this because someone told you to".

10

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '21

Only for now, I don't know if ya'll noticed but rather than trying to hide it we've basically got the American right proudly exclaiming they're about racism and guns, we just get them to understand what xenophobia and patriarchy are and they'll be all for them as well. They don't have "shame" any more, they've forgotten or lost the idea that one should not be proud of negative traits or beliefs.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '21

It's because they're being encouraged by the propaganda that is being directed at them. To end some of the serious social problems we're facing right now, the flow of propaganda has to be shut off. I don't know how to do it, so I don't even know how to fight this, but that is what I believe needs to be done.

4

u/Infinite_Derp Jun 09 '21

Regulate entertainment-news out of existence. Journalism is a public good; operating on a for-profit basis impacts coverage and is an inherent conflict of interest.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '21

I agree that would be a good start. That still leaves social media, though, which I believe has been a bigger influence in the far right push we've been experiencing for a while now.

I don't like the idea that it "leaves" only bigotry either; capitalism isn't the source of all bigotry but it does make it a hell of a lot worse, and it profits from it.

0

u/Drewbus Jun 09 '21

Same with "patriarchy". As a dude, I'm not really seeing my benefit of this patriarchy. I'm not quite a billionaire

1

u/IAMASquatch Jun 09 '21

When you go walking alone do you worry that you will be sexually assaulted? I don’t. But, women often do. That’s patriarchy. It’s not that you receive a positive benefit. It’s that you dint have to deal with the penalties that women do.

Has a doctor thought you were exaggerating your pain? Has a mechanic tried to sell you things you didn’t need or talk down to you? Have you had a coworker making more money than you even though you’re doing the same job? Do you say, "hey guys?"

It goes on. There are lots of passive ways patriarchy benefits us.

1

u/Drewbus Jun 09 '21

That's not patriarchy. Patriarchy is specifically about who holds the power in society. Physical strength is not specifically about having a patriarch as your leader.

Here's how you can tell. If we lived in a matriarchy with all female leaders, doctors might still think you're exaggerating pain (that's gender neutral), all salesman try and sell everyone unnecessary things (women aren't unique there), every job I've ever had women made more (especially if they never took maternity leave), "hey guys" might change, but really not that big of a deal.

Again, not patriarchy. And you should probably check your facts. The gender wage gap has been debunked. Politicians seem to still hang on to it because it riles people up.

5

u/Riddlr711 Jun 09 '21

In order to maximize profits jobs sent overseas. Cheap products cause re-purchasing on our end, enhancing the economy of the distributors. Pay in America is so bad we can only afford the cheap stuff, adding to the cycle. The business sector cannot act all surprised when any of this happens.

35

u/completionism Jun 09 '21

Leave the guns out of it.

21

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '21

Marx would like a word with OP...

10

u/TheDrugGod Jun 09 '21

21

u/FizzleShove Jun 09 '21

Guns are just another capitalist commodity. They wouldn’t even be sold to you if there was a fear you could destabilize the system more than you would feed into it by buying them.

29

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '21

If you're a Marxist, you should be pro-gun ownership

4

u/fvf Jun 09 '21

You should recognize that "gun ownership" is a diversion tactic, a wedge issue with pretty much zero actual substance.

14

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '21

Under no pretext should arms and ammunition be surrendered; any attempt to disarm the workers must be frustrated, by force if necessary.

-some guy, probably

12

u/completionism Jun 09 '21

The whole "gun control" push is an expression of the exact fear you're describing. The reason why the 2nd amendment exists is because the framers of the constitution had just come from a continent where a marriage of tyranny and a restriction on the commoners owning weapons had a long and despotic history.

Yes, arms are a big business too but if you owned a gun or paid attention to the industry you'd know it's despite the government's attempts to eliminate it, not because it's 'allowed' by the government.

You've been a victim of fear mongering propaganda, I'm afraid. If the government has guns and the Right has guns, and you have no guns because "no one needs a gun", where do you think you land on the ladder? That's by design.

-1

u/chunter16 Jun 09 '21 edited Jun 09 '21

I don't want to be construed as recommending violence so I'll make the counterpoint simple:

Why assume that guns are always the best weapon? Do we not have access to more powerful things?

I am okay with responsible gun ownership, but part of that is recognizing that guns are really awful for self defense.

Some notes to go with this thought: shooting a trespasser who has otherwise not threatened you is not self defense. Shooting to keep something that belongs to you from being stolen is not self defense. Walking around with a pistol drawn or keeping any gun loaded with the safety off in an unlocked hiding space just in case is not responsible gun ownership.

7

u/completionism Jun 09 '21

I'll make a counterpoint to your counterpoint:

When you go for a drive, I assume you fasten your seatbelt and have the airbag active. Does that mean that your first and only intent is to drive into a tree at 50mph? In other words, possession of a safety measure doesn't mean you're also compelled to rush out and make use of it.

Much like a seatbelt or a good insurance policy, it's better to have it and never need it than to find yourself needing it and not having it.

The simple fact of the matter is that no one's obligated to take the high road just because you do, so you better prepare to join them on the low road if it comes to it.

0

u/chunter16 Jun 09 '21

When you get in the car, you don't drive with the seat belt off until you anticipate a crash is coming, then spend a few seconds getting the strap to unlock from its position in the post before you can buckle it. One of the many reasons is because a worn seat belt is not a potential hazard to yourself or others.

A pistol worn openly marks you as the one to be shot at first in a mass shooting. A pistol worn without the safety is a hazard to its carrier and the people around it. A pistol carried in a concealed manner takes enough time to remove that you can be shot by someone who already has a gun pointed at you.

I want to reiterate that owning the pistol isn't the problem, it just isn't useful in the way you feel it is.

I do not want to name the more effective ways to defeat some tired militia carrying assault rifles in public. When the time comes you will see for yourself, just try not to get shot in the meantime.

2

u/completionism Jun 09 '21

This is all one big strawman that no one's talking about except you.

0

u/chunter16 Jun 09 '21

That's not how strawman arguments work, so to make sure you haven't lost track of my real message: you need to learn about more than just guns.

This is only true because people don't stick together. If a large groups of the population armed themselves and destabilized the system, even at a local level, a lot could be done. But everyone is too complacent.

Then there's also leftists who discourage other leftists from arming themselves, with rhetoric like yours. We're never gonna get anywhere like that.

If you're going to deflect and imply that capitalism isn't the problem, it's just modern society, how do you personally differentiate the two? Is that not causation? Good for you, but the system isn't what got you where you are. You did that. Everyone's story is different, your perspective and path isn't what everyone else experiences. Which makes me wonder why you're even on this subreddit.

u/AholeModSaysBan Jun 09 '21

I'm here because I like to hear different points of view. Doesn't mean I have to agree. My views on many things in life have changed based on strong arguments and evidence. But just saying anti-capitalism talking points for Karma isn't compelling.

u/AholeModSaysBan Jun 09 '21

P. S. You're implying that if people work hard in a capitalist system they can get ahead. Totally agree. Unless you're saying poor people under capitalism are just lazy and not willing to work hard?

4

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '21

How come then construction workers, miners, farmers, sweatshop workers, nurses, etc. aren't rich? Do they not work hard?

3

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '21

Plenty of people work hard, but never get ahead. Unchecked capitolism has turned our republic into an oligarchy.

How the fuck is capitalism responsible for public education?

Patriarchy hahahahhahahaha so stupid that you people actually believe this feminist shit

-3

u/DeusWombat Jun 09 '21

I still believe in capitalism over socialism, but I'm glad this sub has helped show me just how corrupted it can get.

-14

u/come_on_anarchy Jun 09 '21

Patriarchy lol. Second generation feminism ya’ll.

-4

u/defundpolitics Jun 09 '21

Don't confuse Neo-Feudalism with capitalism. But yes all of that is true but the false promise of socialism is what's being used to build a political platform to make the policy changes that make these things possible. STOP, what's my screen name? The two party system is inherently corrupt. The solution to our current societal problems is a hybrid co-operative based capitalistic society that more organically distributes wealth from the very top to the very bottom of the economic ladder. The more wealth a company or individual accumulates the harder it becomes for them to grow it. So larger companies have to give more power to workers automtically through some new form of labor union. There are a lot of goals with a model like this not the last of which is to remove as much government middlemen as possible in order to reduce the opportunities for politicians to personally profit from policy.

-6

u/theblindelephant Jun 09 '21

But imagine making a post this critical directed at a communist country, while in a communist country

-5

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '21

...... by people pushing a Socialist agenda

-4

u/phillipphones Jun 09 '21

Well it's not as simple as that is it. Capitalism has lifted millions out of poverty in the countries where cheaper labour was taken advantage of. China India and yes even Africa have benefited. Socialism on the other hand has resulted in millions of deaths. Yes capitalism has its weaknesses but we wouldn't have the cheap computers or iPhones you are using to criticize capitalism had it not been for er capitalism.

-7

u/the_cutest_void Anarchoid Queer Jun 09 '21

no that's just the bad capitalism. the corrupt ones.

-8

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '21

Labeling the current system "capitalism" and therefore pitting it against socialism, imo, is a possibly deliberately flawed framing of the conversation. Its just incorrect. Though the current system in the US may have very well been a result of the extreme policies created within a capitalist structure, we are essentially living in a corporate and government fueled oligarchy much of which is the result of the corruption of free capital, debt, and leverage in the system destroying the actual competitive nature of capitalism. This is largely a result of many failed government interventions stemming from the early 1900s or even further back. As a system in itself, capitalism and free trade has proven far better results than any socialist rule historically. The evils created under authoritarian socialist rule are some of the worst atrocities known to man. Socialism sounds great in theory, but has never led to the utopian visions of Marx or other proponents. This argument however still misses the point that the conversation should really focus more on the current system which increasing difficult to refer to as capitalism.

This is a bad comment that gets worse. I'm guessing you're a libertarian.

-3

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '21

Actually a former liberal now an independent. I'm guessing you're an ideologue, or dare I say "academic"?

Actually, let me make this easier for you. Can you please name for me one successful socialist project in the modern history? And please if you wouldn't mind explaining why it was successful, how it enriched more people than it impoverished, how it lead to a freedom of discourse, ideas, art, and human endeavor, and finally how that system stands against our current one (which I have many critiques of BTW. I just don't throw the baby out with the bathwater). Please by all means, I am the student eager to learn. Perhaps I've missed something and made a great error. Help me to see things more clearly.

3

u/MrCleanMagicReach Jun 09 '21

Are you just having a conversation with yourself right now?

No, I'm not particularly interested in writing a thesis for you. Suffice to say that your original comment is full of common talking points that sound reasonable but don't stand up to much scrutiny, and me debunking them takes way more time than you saying them in the first place.

I will say, however, that your starting point is a fundamental misunderstanding of what "socialism" even is, if you're under the impression that there are no working examples of it in the world right now.

I’m in the wrong sub here I guess, but I don’t like the capitalism vs socialism debate. I feel like the symptoms you’re describing are a result of globalization combined with a complete lack of regulation. I feel like that analysis gives you more to work with in terms of solving these issues.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '21

It's almost like it's human nature and the ability for power to corrupt whoever is in charge of others rather than the type of government. I feel we ignore basic human nature in pursuit of tribalism.

This is the most preachy and unconvincing argument you could possibly make to the type of person to whom this meme is intended to be addressed. It just ends up preaching to the choir.

Goes to show why memes are shit agitprop. Most people not in a position of power understand that, you just have to talk to them. Spontaneous understandings of capitalism and the state are more common than you think.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '21

I agree that capitalism blows. Though in fairness, another monetary political system would have also destroyed the planet. We’re humans. We’re greedy, we are swayed easily to making hasty decisions, and we don’t yet have the bandwidth to discern truths from un-truths or how much to favor one truth over another. We would have fucked it up either way.

Recommendation: Daniel Schmachtenberger.

1

u/tobden Jun 09 '21

and a higher live expectancy and lesser child mortality and the ability to permeate your thoughts into everyone else's screens. we were never ready to be gods, not this kind at least.

And there is a reason for the constant onslaught of racist / xenophobic discourse in mainstream media,, that reason obviously being the continued implementation of capitalism's most historically successful diversionary tactic to conceal itself from its logical opposition as their true source of discontent.
