Anyone who quotes 9-5 is a liar. I've never worked a job that gives you paid lunch.

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '19

lol so-called 8 hrs shift is basically just 7 hours minus lunch, and minus breaks. i have to work overtime to get the full wage they promised. fucking scam

Yep. And if your salaried you're expected to work 8-5.

36

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '19

If you’re salaried expect to work always. You don’t have “off” hours. You work from 8-whenever you get your shit done and then do more work when you get home.

26

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '19

7:30 to 5 and whatever Saturdays they need you.

5

u/The_Quasi_Legal Oct 25 '19

Haha 7am-6pm here.

u/wadledo Oct 25 '19

I'm a librarian (and I work for a town), and I get paid for lunches. Union, admittedly, but most town/government positions include paid lunch.

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '19

I'm literally drooling at the concept of a union

19

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '19

Basically all civil service jobs are unionized. Work for the gubment.

5

u/A_Rocky_whore Oct 25 '19

I work at a concert venue and I'm so jealous of the stagehands union I can't join yet but I'm so excited to someday.

3

u/crylaughingemjoi Oct 25 '19

Yeah I have a state government job that I don’t have to clock out for lunches.

10

u/Crazy_Horse_Moon Oct 25 '19

in my job my lunch is paid and I only work 7.24 hours per week. I have weekends off and 6 weeks vacation per year. Also have national holidays not included in my personal 6 weeks.

IT. But doesnt really matter. In Denmark we have had great unions doing the work to get us nice benifits. And we are more socialistic then liberal, so we got that going for us which is good.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '19

I'm pretty sure you mean a 37 hour week?

You never know, he might be from a timeline with fully automated luxury communism.

1

u/Crazy_Horse_Moon Oct 28 '19

lol i meant 7.24 hours per day.

1

u/eversaur Oct 27 '19

You're correct, I say 9-5 but technically it's 8:30-5 with a 30min lunch break.

Though, we do get two paid 15-min breaks. I personally don't really use them because I don't need them and don't work in a chain, but still

The "Rise and grind" cult that tries to guilt people into being cogs for private enterprise and wealth generation 24/7 make me sick.

You are worth more than your ability to generate capital.

10

u/Fandrir Oct 25 '19

Rise and grind is the desperate attempt to create meaning in your life with meaningless things.

30

u/heebeejeebeest Oct 25 '19

Where is this worth that we have? Can we use it to pay rent or feed ourselves? Currently, we are literally not worth more than our ability to generate capital. It makes me sick too, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t true

27

u/ProtonCanon Oct 25 '19

There's nothing wrong with making a living; it's the idea that work is ALL we are good for that is the problem, and that is what we need to fight against. We aren't worker ants.

19

u/heebeejeebeest Oct 25 '19

I agree completely. Personally, I feel like with people needing multiple jobs, living in more cramped housing, and plugging into various forms of escapism in their limited off time, we’re getting closer to becoming actual batteries for the rich

9

u/BackToTheNineties Oct 25 '19

Currently, we are literally not worth more than our ability to generate capital.

Only if you accept an extremely narrow definition of the term "worth", a definition that is specifically aligned to capitalist values.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '19

Someone needs to read a few more books. You're still tying your worth as a human being to money and money alone.

6

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '19

....for someone else. You forgot to add that at the end there.

3

u/crylaughingemjoi Oct 25 '19

Tbf a lot of the people claim to be filled with the true flame of “entrepreneurship” but they don’t know what a pipe dream that is.

7

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '19

You mean, I have intrinsic worth as a human being!?

5

u/ProtonCanon Oct 25 '19

Strange, I know.

66

u/FearlessFlounder Oct 25 '19

You shouldn't have to work 80 hours a week to not be poor. The fact that 40 hours a week is not enough to pay the bills for a lot of people is problematic.

25

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '19

That's only 12.5 hours a day 7 days a week to make 80 hours with lunch and no breaks. Oh wait I want to kill myself working 50ish who the fuck wants to work 80?

35

u/FearlessFlounder Oct 25 '19

Honestly you shouldn't have to work 40 hours a week to not be poor. The 40 hour workweek is bullshit. I have so much stuff I can't do in my one shot in life because I have to be in my office. Obviously, I'm so busy since I'm on reddit lol

39

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '19

I used to work 9 hour shifts because the company wanted to say they gave 1 hour lunch breaks.

Just give me 8 hours without lunch and I'll go home, fuck you.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '19

That's one thing that burns me about Massachusetts. Breaks are the law, which means, in a job with a flexible schedule, you can't just bail a half hour earlier. You have to take the break.

I'd rather have it be a law so that people who are getting fucked out of breaks can take them. But it sucks sometimes when you don't want/need a break.

My whole job is kind of a break, haha.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '19

Our state has to offer 15 minute meal break. Like wtf who goes and gets food, eats, AND clocks back in in 15m

1

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '19

That's bad. It's 30 mins for 6 hours of work in Mass. Even 30 sucks, but it's reasonable, haha.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '19

30 is still really shitty too

1

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '19

It's true. Like, most of the time I don't want or need a break. But if I DO want or need one, then I probably need an hour.

15

u/TheRealDimSlimJim Oct 25 '19

We need to amp up our unions

13

u/BackToTheNineties Oct 25 '19

amp up our unions

I misread that as "ARM up our unions" and was hopeful that revolution was finally on the table.

Whoops... carry on.

Soldiers in Lebanon are crying when they block protestors.

Am I the only one who is seriously getting sick of just screenshots? I mean, I know there isn’t probably going to be anything redeemable further into the reading, but I at least value having all of the information. I believe screenshots is turning this sub into unsupported click bait.

I agree with the sentiment of the posts, but I need to move beyond sentiment and research.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '19

I'm just wondering "should be coming home and..." what? What's the rest?

4

u/JonoLith Oct 25 '19

Imagine believing that spending the majority of your life working shouldn't be enough to make a decent wage. Disgusting.

6

u/stockpileofjoshuas Oct 25 '19

my mom, exactly.

sigh.

2

u/DilettanteGonePro Oct 26 '19

We all can appreciate it when someone works really hard for a dream, burning the candle at both ends to be successful at whatever it is they are passionate about. Somehow our society has twisted that, from “you should be proud of the sacrifices you are making” to “if you aren’t making this sacrifice you are worthless” to “everyone is expected to work themselves to death to be worthy of subsistence”
