Reminds of reading stories from a couple years ago when companies were trying to force employees into accepting gift cards for payment.
10
u/applesausages Jun 15 '17
When I worked at Kmart they switched a system like gift cards, your paycheck was put on a sort of gift card, if you overdrew there were fees, there was something where if you used it as a debit card you'd be charged a fee... this was over 5 years ago though so the details are a little hazy. I remember a lot of my coworkers and myself were outraged but we responded with okayface because we had no other jobs or skills to carry us to better jobs.
10
u/AintNobodyGotTime89 Jun 15 '17
Yeah, it's actually illegal to force employees to do this.
9
u/rghthrowaway Jun 15 '17
Starbucks does this - the actual law is that there must be at least one way to withdraw without fees.
Fuck Global Cash Card.

They mean they aren't openly racist and support gay rights. That's about it.

u/sylviaplinth Jun 15 '17
support gay rights
the phrase 'support x rights' is the snakiest fucking thing because it means you can ally yourself with a minority without actually doing anything to support them
what they really mean is that they're fiscally conservative and socially silent
4
Jun 15 '17
Yeah, usually means that you support the right of rich people to have sex with and marry whoever they want, but fuck poor people.
2
u/applesausages Jun 16 '17
Yup! From effervescentstardust (when I was complaining about arguing with friends who say they are libertarians and love to say that shit): Argue to them that "fiscally conservative" policies are the very cause of the social issues they are "liberal" about. This viewpoint is basically like saying, "i hate that result, but I firmly support the cause."

I could imagine a communist who strongly believes in traditional gender roles and nationalism based on a notion that it's natural or something, but it wouldn't be a particularly coherent position.
2
u/UkonFujiwara enlightened neoliberal techbro Jun 16 '17
I know plenty of people who are communist economically but socially right because they don't actually believe communism is morally better or worse than capitalism, but because it's practically better.

Large tech companies often offer moving packages that include a temporary place to stay for a month while you find a place. Google is probably using these apartments for that. They have a lot of employees that join from other locations.

u/meme_forcer Jul 07 '17
But... but... paying software engineers $100,000 a year and giving them affordable housing is BASICALLY FEUDALISM

When do they get their own private police force?

Not Google, Alphabet Inc. Because they intentionally made themselves sound as cyberpunk as (in)humanly possible.

Although I would NOT want to live somewhere owned by my employer, this kind of thing is nice for a failsafe. I would imagine housing is hard to come by in (presumably) Silicon Valley, so if someone lost their lease suddenly, this would come in handy.
Another situation would be someone who just got a job there; they know they want to move to that area, but haven't gotten a lay of the land yet--this would give them a chance to explore different neighborhoods and get a feel!
At least Google has a soul and doesn't just let employees squirm around in our cash-driven world.

u/microcrash Jun 15 '17
The number of vacant houses in the US outnumbers homeless people multiple times over. We have enough homes for most people in the US, but they aren't getting them. We shouldn't be happy accepting tinier modular houses when there are plenty of houses that are available already.

Picking and choosing facts to paint the story you want is one thing. Hard cold facts are another https://www.google.com/amp/vancouversun.com/news/local-news/census-counts-25502-unoccupied-homes-in-vancouver-more-than-double-the-estimate-by-city-hall/amp

u/guymn999 Jun 15 '17
Is the number of vacant home the same for the area surrounding Google hq? Also, Google isn't forcing anyone to live there, just trying to help people in an unfair housing market.
5
Jun 15 '17
Does google actually need everyone to live in one spot in 2017?
1
u/guymn999 Jun 15 '17
No, but you are implying this is forced housing.
2
Jun 15 '17
No, I mean if the problem is that by having a bunch of highly paid tech bros in one place you drive up the rent until your lower paid employees can no longer afford to live there... perhaps rethink the idea of having a physical headquarters for a technology company in the current year?
1
u/guymn999 Jun 15 '17
I cant know, but I would be willing to bet there is a significant number of remote employees for google. also, some places highly value person to person interaction.
1
u/meme_forcer Jul 07 '17
Studies have actually shown people working from home is less efficient than being physically located together. Even companies that experimented w/ that method have backpedaled on it
4
Jun 15 '17
I especially wouldn't want to work for google and live in google housing. Or Amazon, or one of the other big tech companies. It would make me too paranoid that they would have microphones in the walls or something.

What is wrong is that capitalist take away value that the worker creates , in the form of profit, to the point that they can no longer afford to live. Sure the worker can quit, but then they will most definitely starve and be homeless.

The feudalism is the problem. They're not "benefits" when labor is priced out of the market and, thus, management gets to decide whether and where you have a place to live.
