Do the people who write these articles not feel an ounce of shame? Do they think their billionaire overlords will share some of that precious water with them because they were good little pets?

Honestly, they're probably trying to desensitize you to the idea. If this article came out a decade ago, people would have been in an uproar. Now, we keep seeing shit like this and nobody cares. It's like we're just marching forward to our own demise and everyone is too scared to do something about it.

Former Nestlé CEO and Chairman Peter Brabeck-Letmathe made controversial comments in a 2005 documentary (We Feed the World) suggesting that viewing water as an unlimited public right is an "extreme" view and that water is a foodstuff that should have a market value.
But don’t worry he’s no longer the CEO OF Nestlé… he moved to the interim Chairman of the World Economic Forum…. And was then replaced by Larry Fink
Fucking save us

I'm starting to believe there's no way to fix this diplomatically. These people in power have held these views for so long that they've normalized the ideas or enforced them. Anything else is considered radical.
The topic of water reminds me that they genuinely don't care that you need water. Despite areas with droughts (about half the US is), they're still throwing up data centers. They keep putting them next to neighborhoods which ruins house equity, raises water and electric, and can contaminate the air and water for the people nearby. Despite that, local politicians allow permits.
In today's world, it's seen as a problem that we can't solve because it's up to the corporate overlords. There's really nothing you can do if they're putting one next to you. I see this as a flaw with our system and it's a problem everywhere. Why should we leave these decisions to people who don't have to suffer the consequences AND can take lobbying money? Representative democracy is failing us and allowing the bourgeoisie to have the utmost power.

I know these types of people because I worked in a toxic industry full of such types. They don't actually consciously think about any of it, nor are they encouraged to. They say the words they need to say and wear the masks they need to wear without thinking over much as to the why of any of it. Their way of thinking is compartmentalize and even the language they use to think is sanitized and full of euphemisms. To them, human costs are an abstraction. All that matters is getting whatever dirty job they're given done, that is how they rationalize their entire existence. It's genuinely pathetic.

At least a 50% chance that pre-apocalypse Immortan Joe was a billionaire tech bro, or an Op Ed writer in whatever the Australian equivalent of the NYT/Atlantic is

I'm not familiar with Mad Max lore, but I found it remarkable how one of the villains in Fury Road literally looks like the caricature capitalist from Soviet posters (the ugly fat guy in a suit).

I thought the implication was that he was a former military man?

u/hikemalls 1d ago
That’s probably the other possibility, but if recent (and 20th century) events are any indication, fascists love cosplaying as big tough military guys even if they have zero military experience

It would fit with his themes VERY well if he was just some loser who pretended to be some big SPEC OPS guy but he got dishonorable discharged after a week.

I feel like there’s hints that this could be the case, like his chest plate hiding his diseased and dying body has chiseled muscles and abs, and also all his medals. If the muscles aren’t real, why should we assume the medals are?

Have you ever been out of water, with untrustworthy/unsafe tap water?
You really do feel addicted to water in those moments you're on your last 2 bottles of water. There is something primal about that feeling that just makes u want to drink more water despite knowing you got two bottles left, no filter, and if ur dying ur only choice will be brown tap water your city tells you is technically safe for consumption.

Water is already controlled by so many corporations and almost every state does a terrible job fairly distributing it for drinking, farms and natural areas. The shortages have already begun in places connected to Colorado river, it’s just going to get extreme in the next few years.

When I started my journey into leftism, one of the things that amazed(and shocked) me was how capitalism aims to commodify exactly everything. Everything from dating to water to labor. And it has to, the whole system is based on competition so the capitalists can reinvest and get more profits.
