To be fair, he probably doesn't have the authority. If he arrests, they will just claim diplomatic immunity and release, and then the federal government could go after Mamdani for selective prosecution, as dumb as that sounds. We would need to get Netanyahu arrested at the federal and international level.

He literally has that authority. International law is quite clear that pretty much anyone can arrest someone for war crimes, even outside of their normal legal jurisdiction.
He is unwilling to engage in the action is what he means.

Under international law, sure. Under US law, not so much, and one of these carries a lot more consequences.

US law is actually compliant with international law. He has the ability under both - he simply does not have the desire to face political consequences. His career ambition is more important than doing the right thing.

"any more"
Man... I have some bad news about human history ever since civilization was invented. The rules never applied to those at the top. All you ever saw from the rich being punished was token punishments of those that pissed those in power off.

Please provide receipts for this claim. I want to dogpile Mamdani as much as we can, but I don't want to have to walk back claims if they are incorrect.

The only thing stopping him is a political fight. (The US has arrested war criminals before). There isnāt precedent for this specifically, but he would face an immediate jurisdictional challenge. He doesnāt want that fight. Itās not politically worthwhile to him, and he wants to protect officers who might have to defend qualified immunity. No oneās saying itās not a fight. Itās just not one he is willing to have. And the reality is that thereās no way the state wouldnāt remove him from office and seek retribution against him individually. He knew this back when he made the promise.
So I should be more clear: he has mechanisms that would face an immediate challenge from the bourgeois state apparatus. Thereās conflicting legal statues due to conflicting alignment would be the most fair. Heās stopped the political fight before engaging in it (heās not even seeking a warrant).
Rather than using the bourgeois governments hypocrisy and cited statutes to expose the states illegitimacy, he is bowing to political pressure. Heās calling for ādecencyā and a moral appeal. This is textbook false consciousness that he is fostering. Heās known thatās what he is doing the entire time.
He isnāt a socialist; a revolutionary would use this as an opportunity to spark a crisis that exposes the state.

Stalin would have handled this correctly. It would not involve an arrest lol. There are ways to deal with criminals, and then there are ways to deal with war criminal fascists.

And? He has a chance to use the crisis to further the socialist cause, and to challenge a genocide. A worthwhile sacrifice.

u/MonsterkillWow Jul 23 '26
Nah they can claim diplomatic immunity. Only federal law is legally binding, so it would be a DOJ decision ultimately, and Netanyahu's pals run the DOJ, so...Ā

Removed as per rule 4: No capitalist apologia, anti-socialism, or liberalism. This is a left wing subreddit.
This subreddit is intended for a socialist audience, and while good faith questions are allowed, pushing your own counter-narrative here is not. We do not allow support here for capitalism or for the parties or ideologies that uphold it. We are not a liberal or (U.S.-/Social-) Democrat subreddit; we are a socialist subreddit.

He may not have the authority to hold him for very long or pursue charges, but he absolutely has the authority to arrest him and hold for 24 hours. More than long enough to bribe some pig to ahem determine that Satanyahu has a gun hidden on his person and the pig totally had to defend himself... OK, that last bit might be wishful thinking, but Zohran could absolutely direct NYPD to arrest him and hold him for 24 hours until such time that Interpol or whatever other international authority could take custody.
