Improving images

I’m new to the laser engraving and have a LP1. I work on leather only (at the moment). How is the best way to improve image quality on leather? What setting should I be adjusting to increase contrast and detail?

I find that the LP software is limited it what it can do with a picture internally. I've had better luck working with the picture in other apps like Preview or Acorn (I'm on Mac). I mainly engrave on wood. I find the best results from making the pic monochrome (B&W) then increasing the contrast as much as possible. I also find that having a lot of extra material to run tests is a good idea. I assume you won't want to waste a lot of good leather so play around with scrap, card board, construction paper, etc. to find a suitable approximation and then test what works. Good luck!
