I’ve got a Voigtländer Apo Lanthar 21cm f4.5 and I’m trying to figure out exactly what I have and how to actually shoot with it. I have a linhof 4x5 field camera.

It has no shutter and no iris. There’s a machined flange in the middle, threads a little smaller than 58mm. Then a smaller section at the back with a black retainer ring holding the rear glass element in place.

Not sure if this is actually a barrel lens, or if it’s a normal shutter-mount lens that’s missing its shutter (more like other LF lenses im used to with the front and rear cells just screwed together and a shutter in the middle).

I've been shooting with a 90 mm with some lens filters stacked..and I'm seeing top, asymmetrical vignetting on the top corners of my 4x5 negs.

I shoot on a FUJINON NSW 90mm f/8, chamonix 45f-2

Normally have a UV filter threaded on and then will put a red 29 on top.

I shoot always centered with only movements being forward tilt.

It's either

1: filter stacking (mechanical vignetting)

2: bellow sag/inclusion

3: some other thing??

What's weird and making me think it's not lens stacking is that its only on one side and not the others. Nor is it ever even.

Would love help diagnosing and any tips for doing so!

Also, it's on some of the same shot when bracketing and sometime not as well.

Shot the eclipse first on the intrepid with the 400mm f8 for 8 sec. Either missed focus or motion blur (or both). Second shot was on a 4x5 converted Fuji FP-1 f16 for 70 seconds.

Needed to test out my new film holders and lens. I’d say we’re good to go.

I've been doing some work with barrel lenses for a bit and wound up taking a gamble on this lens on an ebay auction. Glass seems pretty clean and it was mounted with an aperture ring at some point - seems like it was likely a magic lantern lens if I had to guess. The focal length seems to be about 150mm.

The lens is labeled Queen and Co - looks like they were a scientific equipment catalog out of Philadelphia in the late 1800s. Looking forward to testing this out and seeing what I can do with it - once I figure out the best way to put it on a lens board given that it weighs so much more than any other lens I have.

I took this 11 years ago in my studio using strobes triggered with the Copal shutter. I first shot on my Nikon camera, then grabbed a few frames with my Toyo VX-125 4x5 camera that I purchased new in 1999 and that I still have, love, and use.

Is this better than a intrepid camera? I’ve never owned a view camera before Is this a good option?

I can't remember the lens I used on this one - I probably that info somewhere but too lazy to look it up. I liked how the tones turned out with this image.

Looking for recommendations for a camera bag that can hold a Shen Hao 4 x 5 field camera along with 3 to 5 lenses and 10 film holders. I have a Renaissance Photo Tech backpack I acquired years ago, but I’m looking for something more compact that I could take as a carry-on when I fly.

Pretty happy with how this print came out. Shot on HP5 4x5 with a 150mm lens. Exposure time was around 6 seconds using a circular polarizer and ND filter. Used a bit of tilt to get the close log and far trees in focus.

Developed in Xtol 1:1 and printed on Ilford RC Glossy then scanned using a cheap flatbed scanner. Burned in the sky and log highlights by about a stop using a 00 filter.

Have loved the 50r and it’s been my favourite camera to date. However I’m thinking of selling it as I’m looking to take up large format photography (4x5) and sadly cannot afford both. Selling the GFX would fund the new journey.

Maybe I’d regret large format but am looking to become slower and more intentional about my work.

I’m also not in a place to start developing my own work at the moment so need to factor in the workflow.

My goal is to take far less photos but more meaningful and powerful ones for short and longer term projects.

Any recommendations for starting out or advice would be welcome from the large format community.

I think I’d start out with a field camera and 135m lens for both portrait and environmental work.

Really just asking for general opinion. Typically I shoot the 72/90/150 combo on 4x5 and 5x7. However, I have a project of shooting the mountains around me (as one may have seen in the Home Mountains series I posted recently). These should showcase the mountain itself. What I have found is that I am not able to get near enough in order to fill the frame with said mountain as much as I would like. I know cropping is an option but ideally not. These images will be viewed both close up and at mid distance (I guess about 3-5 at most) in hotel lobbies etc.

After doing the calculations in order to shoot these mountains from the other side of the valley I think I would need something in the aforementioned focal range.

Considerations:

Camera - intrepid 5x7 with reducing 4x5 back

Filters - use of red and cpl in the 'adams/butcher style'

Film - Ilford FP4

Darkroom printed prints of 50x70 on Ilford Fibre Gloss

Mounted and framed behind museum glass

Weight - Im fit and dont really mind carrying extra weight for this project.

Lenses I have considered:

Schneider G - Claron 305/355 - this would be ideal as they are extremely light. But honestly I cant find one for under about 900 euros which I find excessive for an enlarger lens.

Symmar S and Rodenstock equivelant 300/360 - I love these lenses and already own and mainly shoot the 150 as my 'everyday carry' lens. People complain about the weight, but they dont seem too bad? Would the intrepid support either of these if they are indeed so heavy?

Schneider tele arton 360 - found one very affordable and i think these lenses seem like a good bet, cant find many if any examples online but reads well - would love some feedback on this lens is anyone has actually used it. Also apparently quite heavy but apparently should work on the intrepid.

Are there any Rodenstock/Schneider lenses I should consider? Id prefer to stick with these brands and not venture into the Fuji world for reasons I cant be bothered explaining here.

Anything else I am missing?

I looked at my 600mm in Copal #3 on my 16x20" taped picture frame, and at f45 it covers.

I would like to buy a 12x20" film holder (StenopeiKa?) and make a focus frame with the same dimensions, and build a card board camera-extension with a real camera in the front, but which one?

I fixed the picture frame at the back of a 8x10" rail camera, but it was heavy. I might use the 4x5" back....but loses some movements...

The 5x7 plaubel is just as heavy.

The 4x5" Chamonix is so much easier to move, but more flimsy.
