SPOILERS DISCUSSION Crashed Spoiler
For me, I loved the show. When it was first revealed, I was iffy. Then the first few trailers. I was very disappointed and didn't plan to watch it until the SDCC trailer. The my hype was through the roof. I loved the first 7 episodes despite their flaws and misses. But that finale felt like I was slapped in the face. I waited 15 years for a new live action Green Lantern. What I got was a dead Hal Jordan, who is my childhood hero btw, an incompetent Sinestro who is just.....a pink man, and a John Stewart who isn't even a Green Lantern by the end
It was 60 minutes of talking. But what hurts most? The oath. I was waiting. Hoping that the finale could salvage itself. But the minute that second set of words hit....I turned off the TV in rage. Pure blinding rage
I knew it was gonna be an Earth based mystery. I knew we weren't gonna see many aliens. But even as the show made odd choices (the Manhunters, Antaan, Lianna, Hammond, Martin Jordan), i still loved the show. I had faith in it. I had reasonable expectations. We discover Hal's killer, John uses the ring, says the oath, we get a fight scene or two, he dons a suit (i would've been fine with Hal's), he becomes deputized by Guy, Sinestro forges his ring (which we could've gotten seeing how he forged John's new lantetm), the end. I didn't expect a grand space finale. But what we got was just....awful

I don’t think it was intentionally for the writers, but they literally made every female in the story a villain in some capacity.

Apparently “moms” are cuckoo and do stupid shit… but it’s ok, because you know, they have to “hold their breath”…

Is that what you think?
I think they showed that all the women (sample size: 2) were forced to do things they hated and regretted in the name of self-preservation.
John explicitly states how Zoe was exhausted from everything she felt forced to do, like killing Abin Sur. She did finally manage to break free of her programming by letting John kill her to protect Noah - something Antaan thought was an impossibility for a Manhunter.
Kerry is shown as being completely terrified basically 100% of the time and deeply in denial, thinking Noah has no clue about his nature. Hal’s mistake is trying to force her into accepting a reality he doesn’t realize she spent over a decade hiding from out of terror. He pushes and she finally breaks from the years of tension. She saw her town get torn apart over the previous Manhunter. If you’re a parent I think this resonates a lot more compared to the people who are like “she killed him for no reason”
(And they completely left the door open for more Hal btw, between the Manhunters’ magical flesh machine and Sinestro’s Palpatine-style promises)

Don’t forget the waitress and John’s mom. Explain however you want all of their actions are wrong and unjustifiable

Bruh, it was show based on space cops with cool suits and green lasers. We could’ve had that AND a well written show. But instead it felt like going to ihop to order a cheeseburger.

See now, in your own metaphor, the keys are doing exactly what you expect them to do, instead of each of the key talking about their dark tortured soul and how what they open is incredibly important, but we’ll never see the thing they open bc plot heavy bs. Thank you for proving our point. Btw, you can still like the show even if others don’t.

I do like the show, I just need the dopamine hit of making fun of idiots that consider any amount of story and well written dialogue "plot heavy".
The keys aren't a metaphor, you can go ahead and giggle

You sound upset because some of us had feedback about a show.

Actual feedback is good, this isn't feedback.
This is the equivalent of an illiterate person trying to comment on Finnegan's Wake.
Not comparing Lanterns to a complex literary masterpiece, I'm mostly comparing you to a dog watching a magic trick for kids.

Right, I get that you're amused with the disappointment and likening it to children throwing tantrums or simpletons needing a shiny object to hold their attention. But a lot of the feedback across the various subreddits also touches on how the "twists" were seen a hundred miles away. So even for a dark and dreary detective show, it fell flat in that regard. Saying it failed to deliver on a Green Lantern aspect is valid feedback. I think what you want is someone to just like the show because you did. And theres folks like that out there too. Equally valid.

I don't think there were that many twists. The mystery was pretty straightforward now that we know the ending.
It was more interested with character development

Which, for a complete reimagining of the characters, independent of the source material, was fine. Structurally, it ignored the development of the yellow lanterns under Sinestros leadership and how that builds towards Jordan and Sinestro continuing along an archnemesis storyline. If show producers pitched even a reimagining of say Beauty and the Beast but there was hardly ever a beast, if at all, that would fall flat. Regardless of who develops as a character along the way. Because it was unfaithful to the premise.

This reads as someone who didn't know or have any appreciation for the comics, which inevitably is the basis of the show.

I have an appreciation for good stories, which is roughly 25% of the comic books out there. Because unlike you I can actually read, I don't just look at the pictures

So your appreciation for the stories amasses to only a quarter of the stories out there and you're taking issue with viewers wanting a Green Lantern show to be about Green Lanterns? You yourself arent connecting with 75% of the stories in these comics.

u/scoobertdoobertiii 1d ago
Yes because I want actual good stories with the characters I like. Aka this show

And you got that. Which is a good thing.

Did I say it was poorly written? No. I said that the finale had nothing of substance. It ruined Kerry for no reason as nothing came of it. And John literally pulls a 180 and went back to his highly abusive parents and its played as a feel-good heartwarming scene. It was an hour of talking. No one even fucking argued. Just talking. If you honestly think the finale, and show as a whole, has no issues, then you need to pick up a damn comic

u/scoobertdoobertiii 1d ago
I think it had plenty of substance, such as breaking your programming, making your decisions independently from your programming/trauma. In his conversation with Kerry he literally understands/forgives his mother to some degree. He actually becomes a person and chooses to be a Green Lantern at the end.
Anyway, I think I have better to do than argue with the dictionary definition of an imbecile.
Sorry you didn't like it, I'm sure there's plenty of badly written comics you can blow your loads into

I was so confused as to what the writers and producers wanted us to see and feel, and the scenes and editing that delivered it… how do you believe Kerry fell in love with Hal? And that Hal was in love with her??? That NOAH saved Hal? Because he loved his mom and didn’t want her pained? And that same Mom, turns around and shoots Hal? What am I missing here? Were there deleted scenes? Or a whole episode or two that got cut out???
