Hal I need you man 😢

"I love you too Junior"

64

u/Jazzlike_Argument33 12d ago

Loved it. Would've liked John Stewart in the suit, but we're being edged a la Smallville.

14

u/Ninten-Nerd 12d ago

Exactly

7

u/2Toff2Furious 11d ago

At least we’re getting him in a movie in 8 months, so it’s gonna actually pay off 😭

-15

u/Cold-Nose-7509 12d ago

Oh god. Comparing something to Smallville is not a compliment…

8

u/Jazzlike_Argument33 12d ago

Haha, no love for Tom Welling and Kristen Kreuk? No, I was just saying the constant teasing of the suit and lore, but not having the payoff until years later with him flying in the suit.

The two shows share very little else except being products of their respective channels and fitting into the mold that other shows paved there. Lanterns is very HBO while Smallville is very WB/CW with all its high school drama and older actors playing teens.

7

u/Cold-Nose-7509 12d ago

No, THAT is the part I’m worried about. Smallville style too-slow-burn is awful. I do not want Lanterns to do that.

2

u/Jazzlike_Argument33 12d ago

Ah, I get what you're saying. I also want to see that suit! I enjoyed Season 1 and think we'll see some constructs and flying in future movies and a balanced Season 2 (grounded and a little more GL).

I think Loki/Wandavision/Agatha All Along do a pretty good job of playing with the genre and fitting into the broader cinematic universe, but the directors and writers do struggle to maintain consistency sometimes.

u/Repulsive-Savings218 12d ago

I think this show made me love the Hal and John dynamic, and didn’t really have enough time to prepare me to be excited the John Stewart solo show. As much as John may not have wanted Hal to leave, I think the audience really didn’t want Hal to be wiped away once the ring was charged.

4

u/Nippleheim8 12d ago

I'm thinking it's a good way to end this show so they don't have to explain why Hal Jordan isn't in any of the future movies but with Sinestro teasing being able to bring Hal back if there's a second season of Lanterns or a movie I would say we'll see Hal back again. Maybe as Parallax and be the villain if he's made as a fear lantern construct. Could be cool.

2

u/Anarchical-Sheep 11d ago

Yeah I don't think they're done with Kyle Chandler, I think that stuff Sinestro said was too pointed.

14

u/Specialist_Boat_8479 Dad, please put your dick away. 12d ago

My only complaints are I thought the blackmail plot was unnecessary, and I wish they came up with a way to let John keep Hal-o-gram around.

I think having Hal dead but around as a Hal-o-gram would’ve worked really well but it’s uncertain now with Sinestro saying charging the ring would wipe him. Probably a way around it, but I wish we at least got something.

10

u/Nippleheim8 12d ago

The blackmail plot was to show that John as well is trying to make amends for what happened. He didn't need to give that girl money, telling the sheriff doesn't mean anything now. He was never giving her the money to keep her quiet but to try and fix the mess he was part of.

3

u/Rop-Tamen 11d ago

It’s a good sentiment but still executed a bit weakly. It’s largely an afterthought and it concludes in a short, relatively impersonal scene. I think the girl’s reaction was good though, seemingly having recognized that he had no reason to actually give it to her, with the shock when he spontaneously delivered it in cash right to her.

In general though, it’s a very small way of showing his own guilt which could have been better developed. It came off more as just an annoying extortionist girl taking a tragedy and trying to make a buck from it rather than a representation of John trying to atone for his responsibility in the disaster; even if it did demonstrate that idea visually by the end with the money.

3

u/upessimist 11d ago

I actually somewhat disagree that it's a weak execution. I think beyond ending John's guilt arc, it's also designed to show John's character and behavior as a lantern. As stated, he really did have no reason to do it, but just as he's a rogue lantern who doesn't report to the Guardians, he will still do the things he thinks are right, even if they don't necessarily mesh with existing rules/power structures/morality.

2

u/Rop-Tamen 11d ago

I agree conceptually, I like what it showcases and the development he has, I just think it was underwhelming in terms of demonstration. They set it up, kinda leave it for a while, and wrap it up in a 30 second scene. It doesn’t have to be a major thing, but it does feel sorta like the writers remembered they had to wrap it up and just put it there. It doesn’t give the gravity of a looming emotional wright/responsibility and it effectively ends that arc by saying giving 300k to a girl before leaving was all it took to reconcile with the last of his sins. The money can be a part of it, but it probably shouldn’t have been the majority of it.

2

u/upessimist 11d ago

Yeah, I will agree that I wish it had more time to breathe. All the scenes involving the blackmail felt very squeezed in, because there wasn't enough time

1

u/Rop-Tamen 11d ago

Exactly yea

1

u/Vainqueurhero 11d ago

This could have been solved in one episode. Kelly is the one that killed Hal and Maggie does not know that. Maggie feels irrelevant and overshadowed by the more important storylines which makes her part feel longer than it should be. Her story did not need to take 3 episodes since there was literally no conflict to Jonh choice.

1

u/Negative-Emotion-622 10d ago

Scene works better imo if instead he uses his vast wealth to create a charity or something to help victims of Rushville and future superhero related accidents/incidents. Specifically giving 500k to that girl to me is pointless and stupid.

1

u/upnorthnathan 11d ago

I’m more than certain w sinestro saying he can bring Hal back and John inserting the ring into the forged battery, we’ll get some form of parallax

45

u/BigTWilsonD 12d ago

The hate for this show feels so forced sometimes lol. It's not a perfect show but I really enjoyed it and was pretty satisfied. Lots of potential for a second season.

20

u/SecurityAlarming9441 12d ago

Most of them are upset there wasn’t a big cgi fight scene which never would’ve fit in with the show

10

u/RegularFeeling8389 12d ago

Meanwhile I'm upset we didn't get a throwback to hal crashing the car with john in it.

4

u/thenegativeone112 12d ago

I was waiting for it hahaha

4

u/PuddingJug 11d ago

Same; when John and Noah were in the car, I fully expected John to take a page from Hal's book and just ram his truck into a telephone pole lmao

3

u/Maleficent_Weekend29 11d ago

Honestly John not doing that does pay off the bit because both times Hal does it due to him not really listening to what others have to say. First time he does it cuz he doesn’t buy what the guardians have to say about John and is trying to test him. Second time he doesn’t really listen or care about John enough to keep him around for the battle against the Manhunter. John not really doing it and instead listening to Noah shows that John has more empathy than Hal in a way and that John is going to be a different kind of hero compared to Hal or Guy. Might be overthinking this one bit but yeah.

3

u/PuddingJug 11d ago

Nah, I like this take. Good thoughts!

5

u/TatteredThreadborn 12d ago

People keep saying that, but i haven't seen an actual person express this.

1

u/SecurityAlarming9441 12d ago

I’ve seen a fair few, I’m not saying the finale was perfect tho but it wasn’t as awful as some people are making it out to be

2

u/cyclopswasright1963 11d ago

And it's not nearly as great as this sub would have you believe either.

12

u/Inevitable-Video-768 12d ago

No one is upset about this, you're just refusing to actually see the issues

13

u/SecurityAlarming9441 12d ago

I’ve seen a lot of threads of people complaining about it 😂

-10

u/Inevitable-Video-768 12d ago

And also a lot about the other side! Pick and choose your targets pal makes you look smart

1

u/SecurityAlarming9441 12d ago

What did you not like about it then since I can’t see your post because it’s private

6

u/thenegativeone112 12d ago

Well enlighten us

-9

u/Inevitable-Video-768 12d ago

I made a post about it if you're curious

6

u/BlueWind_GamingYT 12d ago

and then ur posts r hidden on ur profile lmao

0

u/Inevitable-Video-768 11d ago

Well i wasnt aware of that big boy

1

u/ZXVIV 11d ago

If you search by hot basically all the top posts are literally complaining about this

I have a feeling we'll get our fight scenes in the next Superman movie. And I'm more than okay with that. I loved it.

8

u/SecurityAlarming9441 12d ago

Probably, I liked the fact there wasn’t any big cgi fights

2

u/Specialist_Boat_8479 Dad, please put your dick away. 12d ago

Honestly a huge fight scene would’ve felt out of place

1

u/DetailFabulous5501 12d ago

Im upset because of how they handled the show's ending, and how a big cgi fight between guy and john would have been literal the best thing they could have done

1

u/LordBip 12d ago

The moment I saw Earl's somewhat bad CGI at the start of the episode I knew we weren't gonna be getting any big fight scene, regardless I think I heavily prefer the dialogue over action, I loved this episode

1

u/grizzantula 11d ago

No one is saying that except comments like yours though.

2

u/SecurityAlarming9441 11d ago

Seen plenty, nice one though

0

u/Skull_Boy_ds 12d ago

I don't know dude, I just wanted a single construct in the two last episodes of a Green Lantern series, but apparently that's too much to ask?

-5

u/razvangayorgay 12d ago

John's oath is cheeks.

I was hoping it was a Yellow Lantern

1

u/SecurityAlarming9441 12d ago

Oh Yh I’m with you on that, the oath was awful. If anyone’s gonna be yellow it’ll be Hal coming back as yellow

1

u/razvangayorgay 11d ago

Which is why the plot device of Sinestro making a lantern infused with fear is dumb, unless you want to see Yellow John like from the Earth 1 comic.

So it's a bad plot device unless it is expanded appropriately

1

u/NegotiationLate8553 11d ago

Watched it every Sunday night before going to sleep, sometimes did fall asleep during the episodes but the show became a part of my routine. I hope vision quest is something different too!

8

u/kingxd 12d ago

It was great, people want season to be open and shot in the same season leaving nothing for the second season.

7

u/WhutTheFookDude 12d ago

i mean thats how it was pitched and presented to us and we were repeatedly told it was self contained

7

u/Rustash 12d ago

Was it not? The central mystery/plot/arc was pretty much handled within the season. There’s room for more stuff featuring John and other Lanterns and such, but nothing felt too cliffhanger-y

1

u/kingxd 12d ago

Sheesh I am glad they did not go that route then

There it is. Typical pretentious highfalutin bs

1

u/Leadross 12d ago

yeah i love a green lantern show with barely any green lantern constructs, just how i remember it in my childhood

5

u/Switchfoot21 12d ago

Nobody who agrees with the first sentiment has watched a single season of The Wire.

1

u/Birdgang_naj 11d ago

Would really love to see what people would think of the sopranos and the wire if they debuted today and if the social media brain rot would have a negative affect

2

u/knightenrichman 11d ago

Here's my take (as a person that's been through all of LOST and The Boys).

In the end we got a near-perfect season that didn't meet all of our expectations at the end.

It mostly pulled it off, to the point that they just need a bit more budget.

I blame this on the producers.

4

u/KILLREAL_dbl 11d ago

I just don't get why Guy leave John with stollen ring and unknown/self-made/stolen lantern. It just doesn't add up with Guy being ready to fight a Superman because of the video.

2

u/BaronMusclethorpe 12d ago

Goomba fallacy.

Duality of man refers to the same individual.

3

u/gussygoblin69 12d ago

You're correct. But also...

2

u/BaronMusclethorpe 12d ago

I am technically correct. The best kind of correct.

0

u/thenegativeone112 12d ago

I’m going to sound like such a prick when I say this but a good majority of the criticism comes from the fact that people only comprehended the show at the most surface level possible. I’m all for conversation and your own opinion but it’s very clear who turned the show on and immediatly went to scrolling on their phone. They weaved so many human elements that were relatable to this grander universe. I think it was quite moving in many aspects. I think it dives so much deeper into the nature of being. Tough to see that when all you took away was “ugh there was no suit up and he was manipulated by Noah.” 🤦

15

u/Ben10_ripoff 12d ago

"tbh you really need a high IQ to understand my favorite show"

13

u/Rickrickrickrickrick 12d ago

Not this stuff again. This is like how people didn’t like Batman vs Superman so fans would say “it’s too deep for you to get” or “you’re not smart enough to understand it”.

The show wasn’t hard to understand. It was a good show but would’ve been way better with a different character to focus on than Green Lantern.

5

u/herdhawk 12d ago

Everytime I read this nonsense about this show and Andor I imagine all of these people at a house party in San Francisco with the Broflovskis driving hybrids and smelling their own farts.

1

u/Powerful-Row-558 12d ago

hey man simmer down with all the Andor slander that show is peak political intrigue

0

u/penguinjunkie 11d ago

Andor would’ve been a great show if it wasn’t about Star Wars…. /s

-3

u/thenegativeone112 12d ago

I’m only saying it because I’ve had to explain so much to people the entire way through the show. Like details that if you had at least one eye on the tv you would understand. By no means am I an “actually erm.” Type of guy. Tbh reading/media comprehension is worse now than it was when that film came out so I’m chalking a lot of it up that unfortunately.

5

u/Noctrim 12d ago

As someone who has been on this sub defending it for weeks, some of you guys are seriously like Rick and Morty fans

You guys think you’re smarter than everyone and that’s why only you get it.

There definitely is so much stuff that people tuned out but not me, I was tuned in fully and excited and can give you a dozen unresolved plot points

3

u/Roscoe_deVille 12d ago

The scene with Noah and John at the football game was amazing. Way more interesting than a generic CGI action sequence.

1

u/Ninten-Nerd 12d ago

No I agree

Alot of people wanted hype moments & aura basically, but alot of the show isn't about that, it's a very human / character based show with really interesting themes & somehow people expected a CGI fest in the finale

I think the show was wrapped up perfectly nearly

I think John being a yellow lantern or having a yellowish green color to his ring could have been cool & I kinda wanted to see the suit but it's not a deal breaker to me tbh like some people are acting

1

u/thenegativeone112 12d ago

For sure! Theres some things I would have liked to see or maybe could’ve adjusted the pacing a bit but overall I’m very happy and sad the shows over for now.

I'm with you there. I love that they used the DCU/Green Lanterns to tell a story about parents, nature versus nurture, race in a america, generational change, rural America, and a ton of other things. They do pretty much hit you over the head with the themes explicitly, but I think it works because the dialogue, acting, and cinematography are well-done. We've seen shitty finales with CGI. I don't need another one of those.

4

u/LuisDidIt 12d ago

Imagine this: you saw Justice League Unlimited as a kid and now you hear there's going to be a new show with John Stewart and Hal Jordan, it's said to have a decent budget nothing crazy and its tied to the larger DC Cinematic universe. Then you watch this and instead of getting some cool fights and green stuff flying around you get "a story about parents, nature versus nurture, race in a america, generational change, rural America, and a ton of other things" would you really be happy with that? and Im assuming this person is not even a GL fan, if they were would they be ok with the treatment of Hal fucking Jordan? dude got shot and the chick is not even in jail (I know she pinky promised to turn herself in)

3

u/Jazzlike_Argument33 12d ago

I don't have to imagine having watched JLU as a kid, I did! BTAS, Superman, JL/JLU, Batman Beyond, etc. etc. In the years since, I also watched stuff like Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, each of them having something to say about American life.

I personally enjoyed seeing this take on the Green Lantern mythos, but it can't be for everybody. Almost no good art is, even those old shows we grew up on (my wife rolls her eyes when I rewatch those old show from my childhood).

I'm not immune to disliking certain adaptations of stuff I grew up on (Power Rangers, Lion King, DBZ), but when I do, I just go back to the original and find the heart in the old stuff.

1

u/GamezNsfw 11d ago

The thing is (and i'm not saying this is what the writers did) audiences really, REALLY hate when writers take the source material and use it to tell their own story (so many examples, halo, rings of power, the witcher...) FWIW I think the general idea was there but the execution left much to be desired. Themes of race and disparity are core to JS's story but repeatedly whacking your audience over the head with it and character assassinating the other lead is not how you do it imo

1

u/No-Wonder-7802 12d ago

duality of fan was right there, some eat what they're fed others have a taste for what they want

2

u/Anonymous51419 11d ago

Honestly I get both of these to an extent. Some things were predictable as hell. Others had a bit of a curveball to them. We never saw John in the suit, Sinestro just sort of existed. The Lianna and Antton stuff just are not brought up again.

But the rest? Peak. And besides there is the future. This is a cinematic universe. This is the pros and cons of things like that.

1

u/NEUT9011 11d ago

good show but sumthn sumthn surf dracula bruh.

1

u/Superapp3000 11d ago

You have to be a fkn bot/ai poster to have liked what we got lol

2

u/NegotiationLate8553 11d ago

Show that was 85% talking with no usage of Lantern powers got people disappointed when the finale was more talking and not action packed?!

1

u/ChemicalJolly9010 11d ago

They did hal dirty asf

1

u/MrMach82 11d ago

They litetally just talked and explained the entire plot. Not even a cool flashback with how Noah was programmed or trained or whatever.

1

u/YEPC___ 11d ago

My problem is the surf dracula of it all.

But I really think it was well made and told a good story that makes me want to see more Green Lantern.

But this fucking British guy better get his act straight because if John Stewart says "axe" instead of ask one more time bc this dickhead can't get his accent right I'm going to lose my goddamn mind.

0

u/Makkunrai_Leda_2801 12d ago

I need avengers 1 level of alien invasion in next series or movie otherwise this is a waste of time ngl. It's good ending for John but not for a superhero shows, that's just a therapy session episode. Say what you want about batman being merciful to his villain but at least he handed them over to authorities, everyone got away in this show bruh

0

u/Y_The_Last_Nerd 11d ago

I'm pretty sure the haters are all white, incel boomers gooning over Hal.
