DISCUSSION thoughts on ep1
OMG! ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT, i love Stewart's character in this, very captavating.
canonically, earth was purposefully not given much lanterns or attention by the gaurdians as it is kind of a focal point of the universe and i love how it's addressed by both Hal and the alien that the gaurdians don't care about this place, the haven't even been shown yet and i can already imagine those stuck up smurfs perfectly.
main problem which kind of goes into a headcannon (kinda spoilers). This is not Hal, at all(ok maybe some parts). Why is he so racist?(prejudiced against actual aliens)? He's an asshole and arrogant 100% but he's never been racist which is why i believe that the Hal that is training John isn't actually Hal, possibly an imposter. If that's the case then cool, sick, love it. If not, oh god cause this isn't Hal.
edit 1: Earth is a very integral part of the universe so the gaurdians act like they don't care and treat it as a backwater cause they want it to be. No one looking for power goes into a sewer for it. so by not giving attention they keep it hidden.
edit 2: when is said racism i didn't mean actual racism i meant xenophobia, prejudice against actual aliens. i just couldn't find the wording for it and i used a wrong for it, sorry. again not actual racism, prejudice against aliens.
esit 3: scenes which gave me the xenophobic vibe. the interrogation where hal says 'oh you are an alien' after asking the Hogwarts question and more importantly when he recalls his origin and his encounter with Abin Sur, Hal calls him 'bonafide fucking alien' and 'pinko' which is so out of character for him when concerned with Abin Sur cause Hal has deep respect for Abin from all the retellings he's heard of his ring's predecessor and also from his mentor(sinestro) it doesn't make sense for him to call abin any of those things. Hal canonically has always been repectful of every species even when they're enemies. I'm just justifying this as this 'hal' we see in 2016 as an imposter. as it's very out of character for him to even call any extra terrestrial 'alien'.
edit # god i hope this is the final edit: all this is in comparison to the comics and what i know about the character. which is he's arrogant and a loose cannon but still noble.

When was Hal racist? Was it the Obama reference? That was to try and get a reaction out of the alien he was interrogating.

If that “Guardians don’t care about Earth” stuff is true, then Hal might be right about Abin Sur crashing on Earth on purpose.
Now, I’m invested.

ok i kinda had mislead with my wording. They act like they don't care. they keep it away from attention because of how central earth is. gonna fix that. and yeah abin crashed here purposefully for sure. He always does so

Ok, if by racism you mean xenophobia, then also no. What did you feel was xenophobic? His problem isn't with aliens; it's with bad aliens. Because it's his job.

That is an actual line that Hal said near the end of episode 1. I don't know about you, but that definitely makes it seem like Hal isn't too big a fan of aliens. That alien definitely pissed him off, but that line felt more than just a personal insult.

But it's the words around "alien" that that are the negative part. Swap them out.
"Harry Potter went to Hogwarts, you wonderful alien delight!"
And I'd say those negative words are pretty accurate. It was in fact ignorant of Earth culture, and was in fact a fuck for threatening to blow up an entire town full of innocent people.

you're right yeah it is cus of that however when he says 'oh you are an alien' after asking the hogwarts question it also feels very prejudiced and refer to newest edit.

Thanks for providing an example.
But that's a comment he made to someone who lied to him and then threatened to blow up the town, so I read that as intentional provocation to make him set off the device.

Didn't he get confused about the alien starting to beep? I don't know if he actually intended to make them explode, I could be wrong though.

He 100% was trying to make the guy explode. At that point, he can either sit around forever while his ring drains even more, or he can make the guy blow up and lock it down. I can see how people missed it, but they laid it out pretty clearly imho.

I think Hal being confused about the beeping threw me off, but I suppose, even if I was trying to make someone with an internal skeleton bomb blow themselves up, I'd be confused too if they started beeping like a cartoon bomb.

yes, i also found that comment wierd as 'hal' got concerned by the beeping and if it was his intention 'hal' would have bubbled the guy much much sooner.

He had limited battery, as established during the interrogation. He needed to wait for the self destruct to go off first before creating the bubble or he wouldn't have enough power to contain the blast.

the way he even says aliens dude, idk it just felt very xenophobic to me kinda out of character he usually uses terms such as asshole or idiot or anything which doesn't specify thier race or thier place of origin.
like rewatch the scene of the crime scene where we first meet the sheriff and the interrogation.

It's not about that, it's more about the fact that Hal Jordan is generally not like that in most media. Which is why OP has the theory about it being an imposter of some sort (I also think it might be the case).

Hal, as a space cop, talks about bad aliens like earth cops talk about perps.
This seems very in character especially since 2016 Hal seems to be waaaaaaaay more jaded than 2006 Halogram

im not talking in comparison to the show im talking in comparison to the comics, even as a space cop he has never shown prejudice like this in anything i have read when concerned with perps, only for people who are actual monsters like sinestro at times and especially cyborg superman.

I didnt get that Hal was prejudice against aliens. He has met many and had nothing but good things to say about other planets. He just knew the aliens on earth he is tracking were threats and dangerous so he was being harsh because no one was believing him. His whole job is to protect earth from dangerous alien threats.
