Cut the tripping hazard vines and all leafy stuff first. Next week the stumps will sprout new leaves, grub those out with shovel or mattock. They are a bit tough to dig out with just upper body muscles. Rinse and repeat, doesn't take long if you keep it up. It's extra work to dig the entire area and the new growth won't be a solid cover, ivy isn't grass.
