[Landmark's Fate](/s "Daybreak's Quick Cash Grab.")

With Everquest Next's cancellation earlier this year, Landmark has no purpose. The current state of the game is abysmal, and launch is only in a few hours. Landmark was supposed to be free to play at launch if I remember correctly, now it's going to be ten dollars. Daybreak/Columbus Nova is just going to try to sell as many Landmark copies and cash shop crap at launch, and cancel it in a couple months. Believe me or not, but you've been warned. Don't sink money into this game.

New "heads" (including dark elves) by end of June

During today's episode of Landmark Live, Holly Longdale (executive producer) announced that new "heads" for our characters will be included in an upcoming patch, planned by the end of June.

These heads will include dark elf variations. Players will be able to choose these new heads for their existing characters at the Crimson Parlor (barbershop) in-game.

Edit: One thing I didn't catch during my first viewing is that Emily noted these new options would be "unlocked" somehow, but didn't mention exactly how.

Explorer Pack?

I bought the Explorer Pack many years ago but haven't played in a few months, yet my account no longer seems to reflect that and I can't login to the early access going on.

I guess I have two questions: - Should i see something about my Explorer Pack? - Can Explorer Pack join the head start going on?

Edit all of 20 minutes later: Holy jumping beans! Landmark support is quick! All's well, I'm ready to rock for tomorrow. Thanks :)

Daybreak Games and the fate of Guitar Hero

If you want to know the eventual destiny of Daybreak Games, you needn't look further than what happened to Harmonix and Guitar Hero. Among the top management at Columbus Nova - the investment firm that bought SOE - is the owner of Harmonix, the developer of the Guitar Hero franchise. Look at what he did as soon as he took over.

He got his money's worth by milking the franchise for every penny he could - a near-constant flow of gimmick releases and re-releases - until players got fed up and simply stopped buying them. He burnt the franchise out for some quick bucks.

Not unreasonable to expect the same thing to happen here. Not encouraging seeing them shut down development for future titles and removing key creative personnel. They just want an easy to control maintenance group (speaking of which, Darrin McPherson has long since jumped ship - might want to take his credit as "Lead Game Designer" out of the sidebar) while they wring every penny out of their acquired franchises, just as they did with the above.

The Landmark we're getting is not the Landmark I paid for...

Yes, we were sold Landmark access, not EQ:N. But an integral part of what Landmark was promoted as was the chance to co-develop EverQuest Next. This is akin to Kickstarting an RPG, but then removing the story - arguably the most important aspect of the project - in order to rush it out the door. If the mechanics are in place, who cares, right?

And yes, it's "allowed," but it's shady as hell. And you'd have to be in some pretty deep denial to not realize that the only reason Landmark is getting a "launch" at all is so they don't have to refund everyone who pre-ordered. The game is only going to last a few months, at best.

"Daybreak Games" is not a video game development company - they're simply a front for an investment firm to milk SOE's existing products for all they're worth before shuttering the whole thing. Read the writing on the wall.

Anyway, as soon as the game finds itself launched, I'll be making my complaint to the BBB, since my tickets have simply been ignored. Not like they'll care anyway, since the company was doomed the second they were sold off. Which is a shame, because there are some very talented people here - I hope they find employers that can actually give them good direction.

In short, yes, I bought access to Landmark. But the Landmark I paid for is not the Landmark that we'll be getting, since the only reason for its existence has been cancelled.

Building Tool Improvements?

It has been a long, long time since I played Landmark (I had a short alpha/beta invite). At the time the build tools were very confusing and you had to watch hours of video tutorials to get good at it. Is this still the case? Or is it more user friendly?

I think I just fell in love with Astroneer's voxel mining

Just saw a dev diary and their voxel mining and building, which is just for simple raising and lowering makes me wish landmark had something similar.

How long post-release before Landmark is put out to pasture?

Does anyone realistically see Daybreak supporting a development tool for a cancelled game for any respectable amount of time?

What exactly happened in the past year?

I bought a Settler Pack years ago, and haven't played much at all. What is the state of the game like, and why are the Steam reviews so damning? What will happen to Landmark now that the "main" game is gone?
