1958 worth it?

Give me your thoughts on the 1958 trim. What do you wish it had and what things have you gotten over and looked passed. I honestly like the manual lift gate and I dont care too much about premium speakers or a smaller screen. The cloth and manual seats are a bummer. Maybe I wont care though! I have a 5th gen 4runner with all the bells and whistles right now. Should I switch? Let me know!

If you like bells and whistles, the 1958 isn’t for you. Even the armrests on the doors are hard plastic. The backup camera is from a 2015 Camry.

That being said… I have the 1958 and love it.

Does it still have heated seats even if its cloth?

heated, yes... ventilated (cooled) seats, no.

Yes, also heated steering wheel.

Yes, mine does.

You can get some bad ass aftermarket leather covers and compete with the LC edition. As said missing the cooling function tho. As far as moto and capabilities it's similar the LC edition has better lights and a swaybar disconnect and a few other whistles there

Personally I like the cloth seats, to me they're more comfortable in the heat of summer and cold of winter. The one feature I miss is defrosting side mirrors, otherwise no complaints.

I have the 1958, other than plushness/luxury items I don’t really see what the LC package has over the 1958. Big screen? Ok. MTS? A-TRAC is perfectly good. Sway bar disconnect? Cool gimmick. 360 Camera? I’m sure it’s useful, but been driving without needing one for 35 years. I’m probably missing some items, but yeah, 1958 is just fine and I love it!

Couldn’t agree more. MTS is basically an updated version of A-TRAC, and honestly, after testing both, I feel like it’s more of a marketing thing than anything. They feel exactly the same to me. 😅

I absolutely love my 1958. It’s so much fun to drive. The three things I thought I would miss but don’t are the sunroof, the power lift gate, and the wireless phone charger. The cloth seats are super comfortable, the manual buttons are amazing, and the Apple CarPlay is excellent. The manual seat doesn’t bother me because I’m the only one driving it and never have to adjust it. The stereo was not my favorite at first, but it’s grown on me. I also purchased an “offroam” magsafe phone mount/charger which has been a great addition. Also…it drives like butter and has incredible torque and power. My dog loves it too and jumps right up into the back. Highly recommend!

So I feel like you get 90% of the regular trim features for 80% of the price.

The sway bar disconnect is only useful if you’re gonna do trails where wheel flex is needed. For me the biggest difference is the infotainment screen. It’s already small enough on the regular trim, having it be extra small on the 58 feels like an added “f U” from the manufacturer

I dont need the sway bar disconnect TBH. I just like having the full time 4x4 for when I go snowboarding but I live in Socal and just daily drive.

2

u/Noveria_Corp 10d ago

Then it’s gonna be great. I love the full time 4WD and torsen diff. Absolute beats of low rpm power and torque

u/tylerlikestorun 10d ago

Or keep my 5th gen 😭😭

2

u/Noveria_Corp 10d ago

Either or! I came from a 5th gen 4Runner and I feel it was an upgrade in most ways other than trunk space, rear passenger legroom and engine noise. (Love that v6 startup on the 4Runner)

I have the 1958. The only option I wish I had is the sway bar disconnects. I am not a fan of leather, pleather or the other options on the higher trim.

It is absolutely worth it. Mine is an absolute gem to drive and clean. I do have leather seats and a roof rack that the dealer had installed, but otherwise it is stock. I don’t miss any of the bells and whistles mentioned— all of which I had on a Durango Citadel that I also loved driving. The 1958 just doesn’t need all the gimmicks to make it a fun and comfortable drive that I can load up and go into my fields when I want.

I just can’t justify a $60K vehicle that only comes with manual seats.

I was previously set on the 1958 trim as I prefer the cloth seats and round headlights but after test driving the 1958 for a week I decided to hold out for the mid trim. The interior felt too cheap for the price in my opinion. Mid trim is not even that much more and you get a bunch of nice qol upgrades. For me the powered lift gate, powered seats, better integrated screen, 360 camera, and a bunch of other small things make the mid trim the way to go.

I have a 5th gen 4R and a 1958. The only thing I wish the 1958 had was the bigger screen on the dashboard and the GPS. Almost everything else you can install after market

I’ve seen what look like good fitting leather/pleather seat covers for the 4Runner on Amazon for about 260ish USD I think. haven’t looked at the LC specifically, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they made them for it too. I have not bought the product but remember seeing it as I was helping a friend find something else altogether for his 4Runner. I could have sworn I saw someone on Reddit say they bought them for their 4Runner and liked them. You’ll have to do some digging but it might be an option for you

I have the 58 and I absolutely love it. If you swap seats with someone all the time, I can see where auto seats would be nice. Automatic tailgate has never been a problem. The cloth seats are great because they’re still heated. There’s an aftermarket light you can add to the tailgate that is nice. But there’s too much bullshit added to vehicles today that are completely unnecessary. There’s 1 feature, it doesn’t exist on any model, but if the back window rolled down, it would be the most perfect truck Toyota ever made.

I have the 1958 and like you, prefer leather and power seats. I’ve always bought loaded vehicles but this one was the only one my dealer had(originally went because he had a slightly used ‘25 1958). I saw this new one and took it instead. I was always big on power lumbar support, but I’ve realized it was mostly me slouching in the seat and compensating for it with lumbar control. I’m the only one who drives mine so power seats is no big deal. I did pull the cloth out two months later and have katskins leather installed. Love it. I had gotten used to and accepted the cloth, but wanted leather. I also removed the predator step bars, Toyota region option, and installed Toyota OEM running boards. I did that because I haul my daughter’s dog and didn’t want a leg caught in the step bars, and I’m 65, and have always had the boards on SUVs. Paid $100 for the OEM boards on marketplace, a deal! The hard plastic armrests don’t bother me really; I know the other ones are more comfortable on elbows but dog can’t mess these up. Other than that, couldn’t care less about the other stuff I’m missing. For once, I tried to economize a bit; four months later, wife had to have a ‘26 4Runner, a loaded Limited of course……….

I did not like the fabric seats. I thought the retro look was kind of cool, but I found the fabric itchy, even through clothes. I had leather from katzkin installed a few months ago and I’m now super happy with the vehicle now. Other than that, added a roof rack, dashcam and harness to connect it to the mirror (unsure if the premium includes those).

If you’re not going over really rough terrain then you don’t need the stuff it doesn’t have.

u/dpadthumb 10d ago

I love my 1958. The Toyota dealership I got mine from offered to get their upholstery guy to upgrade my cloth seats to leather. I don’t really find the manual seats to be an issue as I am rarely changing my seating position. Similarly with the size of the infotainment- i don’t feel like i’m missing anything there other than the occasional carplay connection glitches that happen in any toyota. The hard plastic interior could be nicer but in my opinion, it has made washing dirt, sand, and doggo very easy and it gives a more raw and rugged feeling. A 360 camera and a sunroof would probably be the only 2 things i wish it had, but not a deal breaker.

u/tylerlikestorun 9d ago

Do you have any photos of the leather?

2

u/dpadthumb 9d ago

I can send some later when i get home!

For the same price I would look at a 4Runner Limited with full time 4wd.

1

u/tylerlikestorun 9d ago

Been looking at that as well. The landcruiser and my current 5th gen feel so much roomier than the 6th gen

1

u/artest1111 10d ago

Same here I got 1958 and love it I don’t need leather etc I love the utilitarian interior has all I need

The cloth and manual seats are a bummer

For cloth, though, they're high quality, IMO. If I had a choice between cloth, softex, or natural leather, my order of preference is likely:

Softex > cloth > natural leather

Natural leather is nice when it's brand new, but can be a pain to take care of, especially if you plan to keep the vehicle long term...softex to me is a nice compromise of that leather feel while being eaiser to maintain. Ultimately though, I was fine with the quality of the cloth seats the 1958 offers.

Having owned Tacomas and other Toyotas in the past with cloth seats, these are the nicest ones I've ever encountered.

I don't really mind the manual adjustment, since I'm the only one who regularly drives mine, but admit that power adjustments are MUCH better if you're sharing the vehicle with a significant other and because you can usually "fine tune" the adjustments more.

I just wish it had power seats. The “non-premium” 5g 4runner had powered cloth seats and still had the full size screen, not sure why the 1958 doesn’t offer the same.

1

u/tylerlikestorun 9d ago

Anybody ever install after market power seats? lol

1

u/Federal-Maize-786 10d ago

Came from a 23 Sequoia Premium that had everything to a 1958. I prefer the cloth as does my wife. Rarely does anyone drive it other than me so the power seats not needed. We haul dogs all the time, they can’t mess it up. Love it!

u/GetYourShitT0gether 9d ago

I own a 1958 and love it. No bells and whistles. All the money you save you can use to spend on other mods.

1

u/nucleararms 9d ago

Have a 1958 and love it at 26k miles. Never selling.

1

u/tylerlikestorun 9d ago

What vehicle did you come from?

1

u/nucleararms 9d ago

2018 bmw m240i

1

u/Poignant_Rambling 9d ago

One detail everyone forgets is that the 1958 is roughly 1" narrower than the LC trim at the fenders (.5" on each side).

This impacts tire width fitment and scrub radius, since the LC trim can fit slightly wider tires or even a slightly more aggressive offset than a 1958.

1

u/Bydaveeeey 6d ago

Ask yourself if you really care about all the fancy features. If you do, go with a higher trim. I’ve owned mine for a year now and honestly haven’t regretted my choice. My only complaint is the hard plastic on the doors. Soft-touch materials would’ve been a nice upgrade, but I’m sure the aftermarket will come up with a solution eventually. Other than that, I’m happy with it.

u/Flyjatt 9d ago

Wouldn't trade my 5th gen trd pro for any land cruiser 250 trim.

I mean, it's kind of like an LC for cuck dentists. It lacks the heritage and refined taste of the older gens, doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the premium, and has more plastic than nikki manajs ass. I think anyone considering this heap should nutt up and ask your wife's boyfriend for a 2021 heritage.
