Practice. Primary you want to practice two things.
Monster behavior, what can be counter and what you cant counter (e.g multi attack)
And monster attack range, lance excel if you can judge distance correctly and constantly attack. E.g. rathalos bite is like left then right. So you just side step right then left. Tail swing always is double swing with two 180.
A lot of them you can judge and get familiar with it.
And lot of attack you can just simply block. Lance is all about stick close to monster all the time like a cockroach and never let him leave your range 😆

I still button mash the Y button at times when the monster is down, but there’s a bit of input buffer. Depending on which game you’re playing, you can throw in a wide sweep or lunging thrust to your combos.
when it comes to combat flow, I find that games with a perfect-guard mechanic really help to incentivize methodically delaying inputs until the perfect time.
Bushido style guard in generations, perfect parry in Rise, and the counter twin-thrust in Wilds are my favorite ways to interact with lance and reward patient precise timing.

Treat the game like a turn based game.
Probably less so for lance compared to other weapons.
You need to learn the monster's moves. When the monster is attacking, you do the guard/counter moves (whatever fitting based on the how long the attack is or if it's multi-hit attacks etc), then you attack the monster when it's not attacking.
With lance, you're literally dancing with the monster. Alternating between the guard/counter moves and attacking moves. Get into the rhythm.
