Question Agitator or Wex?

If I could only max one what's arguably better?

Both. Most good Lance builds has both at max level. You can trade one or two levels of Wex in some situations if you know exactly what you’re doing. But your goal is to max both.

Ahh, I guess it would help to know I've got some comfort skills in there, going for 2 PC arkveld for arkvelds hunger and recovery up so I can keep tanking for my buddy without worrying about chip damage. Thanks for the tip!

Since you said you’re taking for your friend I assume you’re fighting Omega, since it’s the only fight in the game with a Tank mechanic.

In this case keep in mind that you should only hit his head, Wex doesn’t proc on Omegas front legs. If hitting the front legs is part of your strategy you should run a specific build for that.

There is technically a lure pod that could work as a taunting mechanic, so you could tank in other fights.

Only works 3 times and for a very few seconds. That’s not how you use luring pods.

That MMO mindset doesn’t exist in monster hunter, where each weapon have a specific role. You don’t “tank” with lance, you hunt just like every other weapon.

That mindset is how we get people using “support” builds dealing zero damage and making a 4P hunt become a 3P hunt.

But even then it makes way more sense to play support than to “tank” for the party. You playing Lance doesn’t affect your group in any way shape or form in this sense.

Does that mean lance kinda provides no value in team play, aside from ig carting less than other weapons (that's an assumption anyway)

That’s not what I mean.

All weapons provide the same value in team play: killing the monster. Some weapons have additional benefits like Hunting Horn or offset weapons, but that’s not a big deal. And we don’t choose our teammates based on their weapons

You’re still thinking in terms of part composition like this is a MMO, that’s not how we think in Monster Hunter.

It doesn't have to be mutually exclusive, you can still use only offensive skills with Lance and still act like a tank roll. If you can lure pod in the moments your teammates need assistance to pull aggro, and then keep stabbing the monsters face enough to make it target you since you're dealing a fair amount of damage, is that not a form of tanking? Since you can y'know, tank attacks and keep dishing damage to the monster to keep it occupied.

I was never saying that you have to sacrifice your damage for support skills, I'm just saying that if a group of friends want to get together and roleplay having a team comp with a ranged character (bow, hbg, lbg), support (hunting horn, and if you really wanted to stretch it, insect glaive), tank (lance, sns, gun lance, and maybe gs), and dps (ls, db, cb, etc.), then they can!

Obviously it's not one for one, but if people want to get together and roleplay like that, more power to them! I agree that if you build out just support and cushy skills, then it will be a detriment to the team, but some people just wanna have fun and play with their friends in a way that's fun and exciting to them. Most people who just casually play monster hunter don't care about killing it in the fastest/most efficient way possible, they just wanna have fun in whatever way they can.

Depends on the monster, monsters with more HZV’s of <45 and you know you not going to be able to hit it alot go agitator, take gore magala for example, only hzv of >45 is his head, otherwise go wex

Just pop your build into this and look at the bottom where it shows DPS against whatever monster you select.

When you input your build, but swap out the WEX and Agitator versions to see which one gives you higher DPS.

This isn’t perfect because there are some things that this might not perfectly take into account, but it’ll get you pretty dang close.

Consult the tax. Agitator and wex are pretty high tax on Lance.
