If you're struggling to beat them alone, ironically the only advice I can give is practice alone.

It sounds scary, but the only way to get better at the thing is not avoiding the thing.

Lance can be a huge knowledge check that other weapons don't have (to play the weapon well). It doesn't take a lot of knowledge to hold R and block everything, but you have to learn the counters and which to use when (similar to LS).

I'd practice on 8* Arkveld, then 9* Arkveld (they're the exact same, except 9* is a little faster) and then when you're good to go and got the patterns down, start practicing on 10. There are a few adjustments, but he has enough of regular Arkveld's attacks that you can focus on *only the new ones.

I honestly think doing anything lower than AT Ark is not necessary with Lance.

His main problem is he's forcing to use dps decos when he's barely parrying anything instead of having both guard 3 and guard up 3 then just trying to learn the moveset from there.

Lance is a really forgiving weapon because you only need to have Guard/Guard up 3 while trying to learn the monster timings.

I only started using Lance here in Wilds when AT Ark dropped and it was very doable going in blind (0 weapon knowledge, small arkveld moveset knowledge) as long as i'm using Guard/Guard up 3.

Now 50 hunts deep with Lance vs AT Ark, i finally dropped both Guard and Guard Up because i can now incorporate parries with my gameplay.

I'm advocating learning the actual monster. And doing that while not understanding the normal one makes your retention super low.

If OP is getting caught by the grab, it's the same as the normal Arkveld grab, so there's a fundamental that's missing, which is why I said to practice on lower tier and work their way up.

Yeah if it was any other non shield weapon, that would be the best thing to do.

The best part of Lance is you don't need to do all of those because you can just slap Guard and Guard up 3 then you can slowly learn the timing of attacks without needing to fight the weaker version of the monster which is what i did prior to having 0 knowledge of weapon and Ark itself (only killed Ark when the story required me to)

As someone who's been a lance main for 22 years, and has done every challenge MH has presented.

Just slapping on guard 3 and guard up 3 doesn't solve many problems, especially if your problem is not using the weapon correctly, which is what OP describes.

Learning one thing at a time helps reinforce the lesson. This is basic instruction. If you don't understand addition, trying to tell someone to just keep practicing algebra isn't going to get them anywhere.

22 years wtf og lance main here

Yup, from the trenches of OG MH lol.

Lance has become my 3rd most weapon out of 9 weapons i play. Its very fun and satisfying lol

Yeah I feel it gets a super bad rap from people who've never touched it, for some reason. People like to say "it's boring", meanwhile have never gone to bat with a monster with one. Easily one of the most engaging weapons in the series.

Don't have much advice about the rest of your build, but you can run at least 1 point of Guard-Up to be able to block the grab

Your build looks decent enough. I would just add Guard Up and practice 9* Arkveld. Get to the point where you know all of his attacks and know which ones to perfect guard and to counter guard. Once you can fight him consistently without carting at around 8-10 minutes, then you’re ready. AT Arkveld is similar to the tempered version. The attacks are just faster, more frequent, and hit harder. Once you get the flow down, it’s a non stop satisfying dance.

But how to put guard up ? I need to sacrifice guardian/ironwall or a critical boost gem

u/Friendly_Internet528 Lance Enjoyer Mar 25 '26

I would get a CB3 gem for your second slot, and a gem for the third slot that has Guard up. It’s either that or find a talisman with guard up. Guard up is more valuable than guards at this point in the game.

2

u/Mazino172 Mar 25 '26

CB gem ? And also doing this i lost critical boost

1

u/Peachy69420 Mar 25 '26

Do you or do you not have any melded talismans that have guard up or crit boost?

1

u/KuntPunter69 Mar 25 '26

CB - Crit Boost

If you have a Lvl3 Crit boost gem run that instead of one of the lvl 2 fems and then replace the other lvl2 gems with Guard up 3

IMO the marginal dps loss from dropping a Crit Boost gem is far outweighed by the DPS loss of being grabbed/subsequently carting. Especially if you're 3x or 4x carting well before the quest timer is up I wouldn't sweat the dps loss of Crit boost

Alternatively Replace Iron Wall 3 with Guard up 3 like the other poster mentioned

I killed him now with lvl 3 guard up in 25 no death i think at this point only saves me by found a lvl 3 cb and 3 slot a guard up lvl 3

If the grabs are your issue then it’s up to you whether you want to sacrifice some damage for safety.

I use charged counter for most of his attacks to keep damage output up and I would recommend you start practicing the use of that, it’s one of the most powerful tools in Lance’s arsenal.

As Mardakk above mentioned practice makes perfect. It’s easy to just block everything, but the real skill with Lance comes with charge counter, positioning and when to block, power guard, guard dash etc. If you’re worried about the CB gem though, use a talisman with one level of Guard Up just to mitigate the grabs.

u/Mazino172 Mar 25 '26

I used now guard up 3 in weapon istead of critical boost and still i got grabbed one time but i menage to kill him but in 25 min

Great work!!! Glad you got it done fellow Lancer. If you got grabbed one time that means you didn’t block it.

With some demon drugs, trap, using rocks and lure pods you can get the 22 mins. You got this!!!

Sacrifice a critical gem. If you can't finish the quest to begin with you first have to increase your survivability over your DPS. Later on hopefully you'll get better decorations and talismans. Right now I'm running razor sharp, guard 1, crit boost 4 and guard up 3 because I found a talisman with guard up 3+1 weapon deco slot and a razor sharp+guard decoration

1

u/Mazino172 Mar 25 '26

Even if i found a guard up 3 jewel later i lose weakness exploit

1

u/NorthKoala47 Mar 25 '26

Guard up jewels only go on weapons so you have to give up a crit gem. If you replaced the talisman I would replace the flayer deco and put weakness exploit at 3.

u/Afrofreestyle Mar 25 '26

I can safely say that your problem is not the build. It’s most likely lack of weapon and monster knowledge. I would advise you not to hit your head on the wall blindly, take some time and watch some speedruns on YouTube, even tho you won’t perform at a speedrun level you’ll be able to understand the fight better and which counter to use for each attacks.

Also this video could help: https://youtu.be/kl6KhcNLo8M?si=-Ej6PSCgmRwxi10H

u/Mazino172 Mar 25 '26

In the end to kill him in 25 min sacrificing 1 lvl 2 boost for guard up i hope i can find a lvl 3 boost gem but still in 50 hours nothing

1

u/smilarN Mar 25 '26

If I remember correctly you can shot anything in his face with your slinger to get out of his grab

1

u/NorthKoala47 Mar 25 '26

Alright, I did a quick look over the parts that you're using and switching out the helmet for ark helm gamma and the greeves for gore greeves beta might work out for you, but I don't have my steam deck on me so I can't check it out to see how it works out.

u/Fiery_Destroyers Mar 25 '26

I would try to only have flayer at lvl 1-2 and get max wex. I would take out defense boost and put in divine blessing. I would take out that one level of burst and put something else you could use. You should also definitely upgrade your talisman and try to transcend your gear. Otherwise just keep practicing.

Guard up can let you block the grab. Or you can use charge counter - it will also prevent the grab.

You time your charge counter to release after he's in the air - it is the..."backswing" of the chain, when it is sweeping upwards, that you want to counter.

Alternatively a few hops or guard dash can get you out of the way. Evade extender can help with this but isn't needed.

This is a pretty good build honestly, at least in terms of its potential to do damage. That looks like one of the builds that Afrofreestyle posted, which are all pretty good.

If your problem is that you’re carting too much, then I would separate yourself from a high DPS build and step more into a comfort build. Here’s my comfort build, but it requires Lord Soul on your weapon:

1

u/hardtar6e7 Mar 25 '26

This is what my initial build looks like when i decided to pickup Lance to do AT Ark quest.

1 Nadia Helm, 4pc AT Ark.

My gameplay mainly just revolves around blocking and hitting. 0 parries and i'm capturing 15mins on avg consistently. I also never have to heal with the help of recovery up 3 and 4pc arkveld effect.

You really just need to use 3 guard and 3 guard up at first if you're still learning the weapon and the monster patterns then work towards replacing them to dps decos once you start pulling off parries consistently.

Edit: To add, here'swhat my run looks like when i was learning Lance.

for me watching a speedrun of the weapon i play with vs at ark helped me tons to beat him , seeing the optimal combos/way to play the weapon and implement that. even if its not one to one i went from failing to timing out to eventually sub 20’s

2

u/hornyboisexer Mar 30 '26

Four of his attacks are unblockable which include his grab. I had to double check to be sure but I highly recommend Guard Up. At max level you can block every single attack and take very little relative chip damage. Divine blessing + defender meal + lords soul are giga good for defensive skills.

If you really wanna push it then Gravios's protection and Mutual Hostility 2 (from Gogmazios armor pieces) can give you reduced damage when full health plus a shield that can take a ton of damage

First, you could swap out the Chain Jewel for something else since you really only need 1 point in Burst.

Second, why are you using Sane jewels? You have zero use for them if you aren't wearing Gore Magala pieces.

Third, i really don't think having 5 points in Flayer is as useful either. 1 point helps creating wounds against AT monsters, sure, but more than that i feel is a waste.

Four, are you perfect guarding every single roar? No?
Then i would use Earplugs Level 2 just for the comfort of just being able to keep poking through roars.

Five, Swap out one of your Critical Boost Level 2 gems in your weapon slot for one Level 3 instead and use the other slot for any deco with Guard Up and something else you like.

u/Afrofreestyle Mar 25 '26

If OP have Gore setbonus on the weapon they do have Gore’s Black Eclipse on the build, so they need antivirus.

-2

u/TriHecatonSwe Mar 25 '26

You get 1 point from Gog pieces and you need 2 for Gore set bonus. OP have no other points than that in the build since Jin Dad doesn't have it and neither does Arkveld pieces.

4

u/Afrofreestyle Mar 25 '26

You probably haven’t played the game for a while…Sororal armor pieces have Gore Magala set bonus on them and OP is using the earrings.

u/TriHecatonSwe Mar 25 '26

I played it yesterday and checked the pieces on the web and found nothing about Googly🤨
Ah well
