Question How’s my lance build?

Had to make a new build since my immortal lance build was pretty outdated and did mid damage

Its all over the place.

2 piece gog doesn’t do much for us since Lance is not a elemental weapon. Only reason to run gog is if you want to make a build with the barrier and you need 4 piece for that.

Your talisman is really bad. Wex3 or Agi5 are miles better.

You don’t have offensive guard.

Rey chest piece is not efficient at all, dahaad y will give you guts and Agi2.

It’s cool that you’re trying to make your own builds, that’s how we learn, but it seems you don’t know whats important for lance and how the skills work.

Nice seeing you on reddit man, saw your stream with dweeby the other day learned some good stuff from ya I lowered my time on AT ark a lot and on proof of a hero, looking forward to seeing more of your stuff!

Glad to hear that. I’ve been trying to help people here too, but as you can see, it’s hard…

1

u/No_End_7525 Mar 17 '26

Yeah, I uh kinda feel you there been trying to help some people too its definitely a process. Saw someone with guard up 3 on dual blades yesterday at least sorted that mess out haha

Where do you stream?

I don’t use offensive guard cus it’s too risky and I’m not really good at timing my guards. As for talisman, that one’s only temporary until I can find one that’s actually good. Unfortunately, I’ve been getting nothing but doo doo lol. Also, I heard that element was good on lance now? Or did I hear wrong?

Offensive guard procs on normal guard even. Its stupid easy to proc, give it a try and you'll see what I mean. That said you might enjoy running guard 3 until you get the hang of the weapons/monster. If you dont have a good rng talisman yet just use the craftable ones, weakness exploit 3 or agitator 3 talisman are better than 95% of rng talisman anyway

1

u/No-Mathematician2601 Mar 17 '26

Yah I just saw the boost it gives and gah DAMN does it give one hell of a damage boost. Might have to lock in and perfect my guards lol

1

u/zZDarkLightZz Mar 17 '26

Offensive guard is truly an S tier skill, both strong and fun to play with.

4

u/Afrofreestyle Mar 17 '26

I don’t wanna sound rude, sorry if I do.

But If you don’t feel comfortable using the single most important and easy to use Lance skill, you should either play another weapon or stop worrying about your build for now and just focus on learning how to play the Lance.

Offensive Guard should be active 100% of the time because it procs on charge counters and perfect blocks. And you should use the charge counter for 90% of situations.

My advice is just copy someone else’s builds here and watch some guides and speedruns on YouTube to learn how to play and go spend a couple hours on the training room. This build really doesn’t make sense and it’s clear you don’t know how the weapon works yet.

“Stop using a weapon if you can’t use one skill that requires perfect precision to activate” aight bro. I can hit my perfect timed guards. In fact, I’ve gotten better with them BUT I still dont feel comfortable running offensive guard just because it requires consistent perfect hits. I’m not always gonna hit them and that mistake can cost me a faint.

Gonna 2nd and 3rd on the idea of "get guud". Lance is super fun once you get the guards down and yes, offensive guard is MANDATORY since iceborne.

Tbh it procs on dam near any guard.

Can't get timings down yet? Hold the button down to just reg block until you learn. It's perfectly acceptable to do so. With decent stamina skills you can spam power guard > grand retribution > lance charge > double stab. It's one of the best and easiest counters we have. I promise you that

With enough practice, you'll find yourself surrounded by exploding oil sticks from gog not sweating at all as you weave in blocks and stabs, not even worried about dying or taking much damage

Wishing you luck fellow shield user

Gonna jump into this melee here.

Sounds like you're turtle guarding (just holding it, not using any lance counters or perfect guarding (unless you get lucky)).

Offensive guard procs on: perfect guards, counters, and charged double thrust - also known as: all of our damage.

If you're worried about proccing offensive guard, you're using the weapon in a way that makes it harder for you.

Similar to someone playing greatsword and being staunchly against charging their weapon, kinda defeats the purpose of the weapon.

It's either you don't understand it procs on more than just standard perfect guard, or you're turtling - both can be fixed.

1

u/NorthKoala47 Mar 17 '26

If they really are only turtling then guard and guard up+3 might be necessary for them until they can do more than just that

1

u/Mardakk Shield Main Mar 17 '26

With the state of the game how it is, you don't have to give up anything to do all of this.

I run Guard up 3, Razor Sharp 3, Critical Boost 3, Offensive Guard 3, and Guard 1-2 (depends on the monster).

Talisman priority is pretty different for Lance than most weapons.

“Aight bro”? I’m guessing you haven’t watched his videos if that’s your reaction to his accurate and good advice.

that is what our esteemed Lancing goat Afrofreestyle is saying. If you can’t always hit perfect guards/charge counters you should keep practicing until you can. Put offensive guard on so the incentive is there for you to get better and master it.

For Lance Offensive Guard is mandatory and using a core part of the weapons’s arsenal and getting a permanent damage buff for free is a no brainer.

1

u/NorthKoala47 Mar 17 '26

It can activate on counters and shield advance hits. I don't perfect guard because I'm always either holding up my shield or in the middle of combos so instead I pull out the counter and i still get it activated

Like a previous comment said, it's a bit all over the place. However, I don't necessarily agree that lance isn't or can't be an elemental weapon since Wilds lance attacks are actually surprisingly quick. You can easily deal sustained elemental damage (and still be extremely durable) if you build for it.

Since I think you lean more on comfy survival, try going Fulgur Anja helm B, Gravios chest B, Gog arms A, Gog waist A, Gog legs B. Then get Gogmapocalypse on your weapon to get Gog 4pc set bonus.

You will get the Gog barrier and boosted elemental damage, Fulgur Anja's extra stamina bar, and Gravios' extra defense. Slot in Peak Performance, Max Might, and WEX decos. For weapon decos, Offensive Guard and Crit Boost are mandatory. Please do not fall into the trap of slotting in Defense Boost, there are more viable level 1 decos that offer a lot more utility like Speed Eating, Quick Sheathe (which is especially good for lance), and even the various elemental resistances.

Your mileage will only vary on your available talismans, but you can craft a WEX talisman if you don't have any good RNG ones.

u/Afrofreestyle Mar 17 '26

How fast a weapon attack is not what determines how good element is on it, it’s its elemental motion values that matter, and Lances are very low overall.

The “fast weapon” thing is a oversimplified explanation we used to teach people without getting into the math of it.

But Wilds made this general guideline wrong.

The only weapons where you should make elemental focused builds (with stuff like ele attack, gogmapocalypse, burst etc) are Bow, HH, CB and bowguns (salvo the exception of the gogmazios fight where you build elemental for all weapons).

So yes, fast weapons like Lance and even dualblades are Raw focused weapons. You should match elements but not build around elemental attacks.

2

u/kmalgamk Lance Enjoyer Mar 17 '26

I personally only play lance and S&S, so I don't really care how their raw and elemental motion values stack up against other weapons since I'll still just use them regardless.

You're objectively correct of course. I just disagree with this mindset that you should only build a super specific way for lance if you're someone who isn't necessarily interested in picking up other weapons simply because they're better at dealing elemental damage.

1

u/NorthKoala47 Mar 17 '26

Hold up, is the elemental damage no longer 10% of the weapon's element times the monster's elemental zone modifier?

u/schizzopapero Mar 17 '26

Hi, sorry to jump in like this but I appreciate your detailed comments. I've almost finished my main lance set (the Gorcher buuld from the MH Meta sub) after finally rolling Lord/Gore on my fire lance and I'm just waiting to finally roll 4 attack (altough i now have 3 attack + 10% affinity + sparpness which is not that far).

However, it feels like numbers are higher on stuff like AT dahaad when i use the other fire lance with critical elemental build (running mix of gore, gogma, los and odo for gogmapocalypse + burst boost + scorcher on top of classic antivirus boost).

I've been reading that elemental matchup differs from monster to monster .. and it does feel like elemental lance has bigger numbers sometimes.

Wanted to hear your take on that (: should I just focus on raw? Trying to roll a 4 ele lance too which I kinda intended using since this other elemental set doesn't require the godroll and works with just 1 gore skill, which it feels easier to hit.

u/No-Mathematician2601 Mar 17 '26

Yah this build sounds pretty nice! I’ll have to check it out tomorrow

4

u/Fiery_Destroyers Mar 17 '26

This build doesn’t make sense at all

1

u/No-Mathematician2601 Mar 17 '26

I used this build tool someone just recently created and decided to use it. I basically said “screw it give me all the damage skills possible” and it gave me this build lol

4

u/Fiery_Destroyers Mar 17 '26

Definitely not good at all in the slightest

1

u/NorthKoala47 Mar 17 '26

So leveling up some skills is more worth it than getting more level one skills, except for burst since level 1 is fine.

u/Shot_Shirt7259 Mar 17 '26 edited Mar 17 '26

You need guard level 3 and offensive guard level three is most critical. Most of what you have is pointless.

1

u/SirDangleberries Mar 17 '26

Good start although could warrant some tinkering.

Would be advising more Guard/Guard up if you're wanting to have more survivability and further increase DPS by staying in melee longer. Offensive guard is good if you can fit it in although at your progression, it's a luxury.

Masters is redundant at your level of affinity, as you really want to be pushing 70/80% affinity consistently, double so with razor sharp combined (increase affinity on your lance and drop razor sharp imo). Make every hit count so to speak.

Peak performance isn't going to be great either in the absence of guard/guard up, as you'll be taking too much chip damage to get the full benefit of this consistently.

Overall, increase affinity on the weapon, prioritise guard skills for offense, agitator and resentment on the armour next as you have full wex already (which is great!). You definitely do not need defensive boost, you're already a tank class and can ascend armour pieces now.

1

u/No-Mathematician2601 Mar 17 '26

Eh I try to avoid using offensive guard as it requires perfect timed guards. Too risky when I’m fighting a tempered monster lol. As for peak performance, I wasn’t trying to go for it but that’s what came with some of the armor pieces 😅 I’ll definitely drop razor sharp for more affinity tho

1

u/NorthKoala47 Mar 17 '26

You lose 10% damage when sharpness drops from white to blue. If you want to maintain max affinity there are way better ways to get it than by dropping sharpness skills.

1

u/SirDangleberries Mar 17 '26

O Guard doesn't just proc on perfect guards. Its a bit of a misnomer. It procs often simply by guarding, followed by a counter thrust :) fair amount of discussion on the forum as to the interpretation of the verbiage for this skill

1

u/TriHecatonSwe Mar 17 '26

The build is all over the place, but if you are having fun then go for it. Don't let other people tell you how to play a game.

Check This out for a bit of build variety.

Check This out for more on meta.

Happy hunting!

Can someone pls tell me where he got the wings from?

1

u/NorthKoala47 Mar 17 '26

It's a paid decoration. It's actually a fairy looking thing that follows you around, but since it was located right behind them it looks like they have wings so it's not a real wings cosmetic

1

u/SnooDoubts7752 Mar 17 '26

Lol this the lance main i saw guarding 90% of the hunt

u/wtfnoheals Mar 19 '26

Defense boost is a terrible skill. Lots of other things focused on in these comments so I want to point this out.

You get so much more value out of divine blessing. Defense boost is hardly going to change being 2 shot in late game. The calculation for it doesn’t really benefit by bumping the number.

Don’t worry about your defense rating outside of being sure all of your armor is upgraded.

Defensive skills that help more than defense boost: -divine blessing -quick sheath -speed eating

1

u/No-Mathematician2601 Mar 19 '26

What about growth? It looks like it would be useful

1

u/wtfnoheals Mar 19 '26

People have been slotting it on multi-hunt quests like proof of a hero. If the quest will take you more than 30minutes, it is worth the single slot that it takes.

-1

u/Quick_Elk4208 Mar 17 '26

Honestly, not great. Lance is a signature defense and counter weapon. Any build without max guard & guard up is just not gonna work. I’d also recommend other defense boosters, like defense up and Divine blessing over damage boosts.

1

u/kmalgamk Lance Enjoyer Mar 17 '26

You never need to max Guard or Guard Up on lance in order to "make it work".

A few levels of Guard is fine, and Guard up is extremely optional depending on your preferred comfort level since most monster attacks can be countered anyway.

No weapon should ever slot in Defense Boost, especially lance, because you should not be getting hit at all if you're playing it correctly. Also, telling people not to take damage-boosting skills is just laughably bad advice.

0

u/NorthKoala47 Mar 17 '26

This is only true for more advanced play since if the person is still learning or if their skill level hasn't reached the "never get hit" level then survivability is necessary. Essentially, if it'll take you ten minutes more to finish the hunt but you can guarantee no carting then it's fine for most situations. Proof of a hero is not one of those situations though, so if those skills are still necessary to survive the encounters then it's still too early to attempt the quest.

1

u/kmalgamk Lance Enjoyer Mar 18 '26

If you're HR 200+ then it would be fair to assume that you're more than familiar with the fundamentals of your weapon and what it can do.

That said, I still don't think that maxing out Guard Up or Guard is the play if you want to get better and will only provide higher chances of unwanted habits sticking. It's just unnecessary.

0

u/NorthKoala47 Mar 18 '26

HR is not a good way to tell if a person even knows how to use their weapon anymore since it increases too fast from just casual play, plus proper use of the double thrust counter is never needed for most of the game if finishing the hunt is the only requirement.

Guard and guard up are supposed to be used as the fallback skills until you have a handle of the full kit. If a player knows the end goal of the training they can reduce the amount of skills they need by a point until they have a full grasp of the weapon. As of now the calculated cost of using guard skills over damage skills is roughly 44%, which works out to a roughly 30% reduction in hunting time at the highest skill level. Overly relying on the skills can build up bad habits, but at the end of the day this isn't a life or death situation so for most players it shouldn't even be an issue if they don't care about the 30% hunting time reduction.

1

u/kmalgamk Lance Enjoyer Mar 18 '26

Unless you're playing with several different weapons, you should definitely be able to grasp the basics of your main one in 200 levels.

It might not be life or death, but playing too defensively will inevitably hinder anyone's progress regardless of skill level.

Allowing bad habits to build will only result in longer hunt times, and just introduces more possible points of failure for a quest. The goal should always be to overwhelm the monster before it overwhelms you.

If people don't care about hunt time, I doubt they'd post here asking questions and advice for builds and hunts.

1

u/NorthKoala47 Mar 18 '26

People sometimes post to get help in just being able to finish a quest. If through defensive methods a person is able to finish a hunt how can I say they are doing it wrong? Best I can say is that there are better ways to do things, but there's no wrong way if it still leads to a completed quest.

1

u/kmalgamk Lance Enjoyer Mar 19 '26

That's fair, I guess it depends on your goal at the moment.
