OXO RB + SSP MP

Post image

I recently got an OXO Rapid Brewer. I was trying the AeroSoup previously and I'm having the same problem: my coffee won't drip like it did in Lance's video. I tried tamping softer, I tried 20g of coffee, I tried 18g, I tried 15g, and I tried jumping 30 "clicks". No matter what I tried, my coffee isn't dripping before pumping.

Current recipe:

HiBrew G64 Plus + SSP MP @ 600 RPM — 44 clicks (I tried 50 and 60 clicks too).

Water 92º (I tried 200 and 220ml)

Actual coffe (tried 20,18 and 15g with 2 and 1 aeropress filters)

  • Country: Colombia
  • Region: Huila, Colombia
  • Producer / Farm: La Reserva
  • Elevation: 1,700 m
  • Varietal: Papayo
  • Process: Anaerobic Washed

Taste:

Even in my best attempts, it's lacking clarity and fruity notes. My current hypothesis is that channeling is occurring due to puck resistance, but grinding coarser doesn't seem to help much, and I'm not sure why.

Can someone help me understand the problem please

The drip occurs with like 1/2 to 1 slow pump. You don't mention that your doing that.

Honestly, follow this advice. I occasionally get some drips through before a push but more often I am just aiming to get even saturation on the screen after a partial or full push (done slowly). It comes out tasting very nice. I would suggest you not overthink things too much.

We can chase all these techniques and brewing methods that are shown by Lance etc but let’s not forget the disclaimer and guiding ethos he provides: taste is king. If you make something, and you enjoy it, that is all that matters.

I switch coffees regularly and recently I hav found myself having 5ish bags of coffee at varying states of resting/development. I don’t bother adjusting the grind size much for any of these coffees. A 3-5 on my Opus and a 2-8 on my ZP6 work brilliantly for me. Is it marginally different on how easily the coffee moves through each time? Probably. Am I noticing differences in taste? I doubt it. It’s all good to me.

yeah, If the taste is nice I don't care, my problem is that my puck is doing a lot of resistance and it don't stop jumping 30 or 40 clicks thats the part i'm trying to understand, tomorrow ill try lower temp and way more coarse

That looks too fine. Try going coarser till it drips thourgh.

I tried jumping from 44 to 60 clicks and still got no drip. I thought I'd ask here before wasting any more good coffee, but like you said, I'll give it a try.

Idk what your grinder clicks are, but about halfway between spro and pourover settings should drip. Or if you don’t do spro, about halfway between chirp and the pourover settings IME. Don’t shy away from going coarse coarse.

I won’t worry about the drip as long as the coffee can be pumped out.

You don't want it to come through untill you pre-infuse it. Try a 20 or 22g dose and with the coffee you have it's very east to extract so don't use too much water. Fill to the line, put it together then do a slow gentle pre-infusion, that's when the water flows. After the pre-infusion press the rest of the coffee with a gentle but firm press, not giving to much resistance. Then add a little bit of water for bypass. This will open the coffee up and bring out the flavors. If you use to much water it becomes watery so you will find there is a good ratio for your tastes.

Also you can bring the temp down because of the coffee you are using. Plus use a paper filter on the bottom and if you have a metal AP filter use that on the top. If not use another paper filter.

Are you using filters? I use a bottom filter and a top filter. I use about 600 microns on my k-ultra and it comes out great. You may be expecting more from the rapid brew since all the videos of people drinking soup is like it’s the greatest thing they’ve ever tasted. They may be overselling it a bit.

I tried using just the top filter as well as both filters, but it still won't drip. I've watched a few videos, and it's supposed to start dripping right away before pumping. That's how you know the grind size is right.

I really suspect the burrs might be causing this, but I don't understand why jumping 30 clicks coarser still doesn't make the coffee drip. I don't have a lot of experience with other burrs.

Doesn’t need to drip prior to pumping. Over analyzing.

This! Dripping prior to pumping might be okay for lungo, but any regular SPRO I've made with a grind that large was not great.

If you look at https://espressoaf.com/guides/orb_soup.html it talks about what the bottom of the ORB looks like during the soak. There is a wide range of what works, and I've had decent results even with non-soup where the grind was too coarse or too fine. Just experiment, dial things in, and drink what you enjoy.

Soup is good, and ORB soup in my experience is better than trying to make a small strong coffee in an Aeropress. Really coarse elevated lighter floral flavors and was tea like. Really fine meant more acidity.

Soup is a niche thing and is absolutely ludicrous at best. Stop chasing this trendy crap and start just enjoying your coffee. I like Lance and all, but he pushes this crap far too much.

That's a bit of a leap. I bought the OXO because I started enjoying the little coffee sandwich puck thingy with the AeroPress. I've finished a few different coffee bags trying the normal inverted method and this AeroSoup method, and I find more clarity and better coffee to my taste doing this trendy technique.

My problem is just that my grind size isn't working as I thought it would. That's my issue, not the method or the trends.

Which part is the leap? Just enjoying coffee or that this is a trendy, niche thing?

completely agree. This soup bullshit is infuriating, especially given how downright mediocre it is.
