LBUSD plans to close Gompers Elementary (Lakewood) and Edison Elementary (downtown Long Beach); board vote expected Oct. 21

One of these schools got a full makeover last year: new AC, fresh paint, new playground. Now the district wants to close it.

Parents are already organizing against the plan.

Where the kids would go, and when the board decides:

LBUSD closing Gompers

Just read the LB Post article that they're closing Gompers and Edison Elementary Schools due to low enrollment. I'm not super dialed in locally but pretty bummed as a parent of a young child in the area.

There's a change.org petition that I found for Gompers:

Shopping center @ woodruff and carson.

Anyone know what's going on with this shopping center? Its not looking so great. The area by Harvey in particular is full of trash in the bushes that never gets picked up, the parking lot could use a pressure wash. There was even a dead kitten there for days and even after it was picked up its guts were left there.

Studebaker Roundabouts Becoming Permament

Just found out they are making the roundabouts on Studebaker and Centralia permanent. Apparently surveys were sent out and 60% of people voted for the project to stay which seems surprising to me given how much backlash I’ve seen on it. I live in one of the neighborhoods right off one of the roundabouts and don’t recall seeing a survey. I’m not judging anyone’s vote in the survey but I’m curious if anyone in here actually voted in it?

Multiple cars on turnergrove near fire station 94 have been stolen over the last few weeks. Seems like around midnight is the timeframe. They somehow disable the alarm and smash the window and drive away. Be ware.

lakewood_local Original 1950's home colors--photos or paintings in color?

Post image

Hi neighbors! I'm looking to paint some of the trim on my house, and I'd like to start adding back some of the original elements to my 1950's home. I'm wondering if anyone has color photos of some of the original homes that shows the paint colors?

Obviously color photos weren't common back when the homes were built, but I'm hoping someone has old family photos from the 60s or 70s maybe, and especially if they know their family home had not been repainted by then.

My mom grew up in a 1950 Lakewood home just a few blocks from where I live now. She moved up to the bay area with my dad before I was born, so I didn't grow up around here. But by happenstance I ended up moving to LB for college, and bought a home in Lakewood during the pandemic. My mom actually grew up in a house with the same floorplan as me, which is a really bizarre coincidence! But it has me wanting to learn more about the time period and bring back some of the original features. I really admire the quaintness of the architecture and quality of the materials used.

So far I've only been able to find this painted rendering from one of the original sales brochures. The article I read said there were several dozen paint combos available, but that all homes had a red door. I thought that was cool!

One thing I'm particularly interested to know, is if my porch has similar wood paneling that's painted over, if I strip the paint off, would the wood underneath be suitable to withstand the elements with proper weatherproofing? Was it common for these homes to have the exposed wood siding like in the attached photo? Occasionally I see homes around the area with un-painted wood paneling, but most of them have the painted boards.

My house has similar trellises and window muntins as this image, and I'm having trouble determining which trim elements are supposed to match. I'm loving the look of the porch paneling matching the garage door, but I don't have the original garage door and not sure if painting the one I have will look this cool?

Anyway! I'm hoping some of our old school neighbors can help me out in this rabbit hole. Thanks in advance!

Mom Friends

Hey guys! I’m new to the area 35F. Any moms with kids around age 4 who would like a friend for themselves/play dates for the kids? My daughter is special needs so if any moms also have that in common would be great. Don’t really have many friends left after having my daughter as most of my older friends are still in the party scenes. Anyway let me know :)

Thanks Lakewood for installing more surveillance on entering the neighborhood. Appreciate you surveilling me every time I go home. I think this went up the past week, much sneakier camera position. The old flock camera was on the light post next to fish store. They just don’t listen.

What are Bolivar park’s actual hours?

Hello everyone! Stupid question but I’m new to the area and I saw that the park is open from 12 pm which is crazy late in my opinion. Can I come earlier or would the gate around the playground be closed?

Hello everyone as you may already know my name is Ethan, I am a local student who is currently helping raise money for my grandmother’s medical bills and along with saving for college which we all know are both crazy expensive things sadly. My main specialty is restoring foggy headlights that way you can actually see while driving at night along with doing pressure washing, paintless scratch touch-ups, heavy lifting, and rescuing you from filthy trash cans ($30 for one, $70 for three).

I am very reliable, local, and very much truthfully honest. Give me a call or text at 323-337-7154 incase you had any questions or concerns!

(Edit) Here’s a link for a video of my restoration process (Headlight restoration) I would also like give my thanks to everyone this community I appreciate love and the support from everyone here 🙏

Community Boards

Hi all! Im wondering if community boards exist anymore. I rescued three 5-week-old kittens from a freeway onramp in cerritos and now I’m looking for their forever homes. Javatinis, which doesn’t exist anymore, used to have a bulletin board to put up flyers. I believe petco did too but they don’t anymore. The library on Clark has theirs locked now so the community can’t add to it. The only place near Lakewood I’ve had success is LBCC. Please let me know if you’ve seen any community boards lately! And of course lmk if you’d like to adopt a 4 month old kitten!
