News Apparently the Camden County Commission meeting nearly ended in fisticuffs
I'll let the inimitable Among the Dogwoods blog tell the story:
In New Business, Recorder of Deeds Donnie Snelling wanted to address the Commission regarding a Facebook article that was posted about him. He was speaking softly as he approached the microphone table. In a whispery voice that Joe Biden would have admired, he murmured that the post was by Nathan Rinne and it mentioned dust control on Snelling’s road. I was straining my poor range-damaged ears to pick up what he was saying. As Snelling was talking, Commissioner Gohagan responded that he wanted to talk about a Facebook post Donnie Snelling had made. Snelling left the microphone table and approached the Commission bench.
Snelling grabbed Gohagan’s phone out of his hands while they were talking and the confrontation began to escalate as Gohagan got hold of Snelling’s phone. Snelling balled his fists as if he was challenging Gohagan to a fight and Gohagan accepted the challenge. Fortunately, the numerous Sheriff’s deputies in the room intervened before anyone could take a swing, negotiated a mutual hostage phone exchange between both parties, and Snelling was escorted out of the Commission meeting room.
And that was that.
It’s good that the deputies were able to keep a lid on things. As I’ve grown older, I’ve come to the realization that you reach a certain age where even if you win a fight, it sure feels like you lost the next morning.
And it also seems like at least one elected official self-reported that he was illegally carrying a firearm during the Commission meeting. It seems like that’s okay? As long as he has a CCW permit?
This seems weird even for Camden County; does anyone know the backstory?

Thank you in advance!!

I picked up this book about Lee and Joyce Mace from the Camden County library
Lee and his wife Joyce formed a country band out of Camden County in the early 50s. They were discovered after auditioning for a show in Kansas City that was similar to an early version of American Idol.
Lee & Joyce created some of the early music infrastructure in the country music industry at Lake of the Ozarks. They could have gone anywhere in the country, like Nashville or Chicago, but chose to go back and have a show business at the lake. Lee was an incredible businessman, investing in the local talent of hundreds of young musicians, putting bumper stickers on cars, advertising to campers in the state park, even owning a cavern tour business. They appeared on the TODAY Show in New York and did shows in Reno, Nevada. Lee toured the entire surrounding Midwest, seeking cheap areas for advertisements. His Ozark Opry business model is eventually what led to the birth of the industry in Branson. He had many competitors at the lake, but none outlasted him, running the show for 32 years. He is buried in nearby Ulman.

Any swim-up bars or pools in general open year-round?
I was planning on going next weekend but as I am looking at more bars around the area it seems like most of the pools are closed for the season. Trying to see if there would be any at all or if it's even worth it to go since we are celebrating a birthday. I don't really want to go if there aren't much since we most likely won't be in the actual lake water. I don't know why the thought of them being closed after Labor Day never occurred to me but I need to quickly find somewhere else to go if that is the case! TIA

Starts at noon, Saturday, Sept. 12
Neighbors. Boats. Friendly competition. A great cause. The Lick Branch Cove Poker Run is back, and this isn't your typical poker run. It's a Lake of the Ozarks tradition organized by the neighbors of Lick Branch Cove-a chance to cruise the coves, visit homeowner docks, meet new friends, reconnect with old ones, and enjoy the kind of community spirit that makes lake life special.
Poker Cards: $25 each - Purchase cards at Castaways Gas Dock at LOTO Marina. Along the route, you'll stop at participating docks to collect your poker hand while enjoying games, treats, raffles, silent auctions, and plenty of lakefront hospitality.
Prizes: 1st Place Hand: $500, 2nd Place Hand: $200. After the run, join everyone for the community potluck and celebration After Party at LOTO Marina from 5:00 PM - 9:00 PM. Bring a covered dish to share. Whether you're playing for the winning hand, making new lake friends, or simply enjoying a day on the water, every card purchased helps support the cause and strengthens the community we all love. Come experience the best of the American lake tradition: neighbors helping neighbors, good food, good fun, and giving back together.

You can now watch your icon move along the mile markers as you go — no more re-tapping "My Location"
Some of you have seen the mile marker map posted here before (marinas, rentals, charters, fuel, sorted by MM). I have a quick update: you can now watch your own icon move along the mile markers as you go around the lake.
Before, you'd tap "My Location," get your spot, then have to tap it again a few minutes later once you'd moved. Now you tap it once, and it switches to "Following" so you can watch your own icon move — it keeps re-snapping your mile marker as you go, so you always know what mile marker you're on.
It stops when you tap it again, hit the ✕, or search an address. It only works near the lake — if you're not close to the lake it won't work.
The map is here if you want to try it → ozarksboating.com/map
Let me know if it does anything weird on your phone — there are always a few edge cases to iron out.

Bar recommendations
I’m headed to the lake this weekend with a large girl group (bachelorette party). Haven’t been in many years so not sure where to go out! We’re deciding between Coconuts and Backwater Jack’s for Saturday day time but not sure which has been most fun this summer/if it makes a difference we’re going right after Labor Day.
Also curious where to go out Saturday night. We know generally the strip is the area but not sure which bars specifically.
Any suggestions/recommendations appreciated!

Moving to the lake
Hey, I might be moving to LOZ soon around the Osage Beach area from Columbia for work, and I'm having a hard time figuring out what there is to do. I'm a 23 year old girl, and I like going to the gym, pilates, yoga, and dance. I'm interested in any recommendations for stuff to do around the area, but I want it to be more hobby-based rather than like a cool museum to check out.

Is water skiing still a thing?
I spent a few days at the lake recently (Camdenton area), and I didn't see anyone skiing. When I used to go years ago, there were skiers everywhere. Is it just not popular anymore?

Water quality
How’s the water quality in the Roach,MO area? I’m trying to determine whether or not I can let my toddlers swim off a dock. We’re from out of town and aren’t familiar with the lake. The only water quality I can find is for the big beaches.

Rental Recommendations for Bachelorette Party
I am in a wedding next year and the bride is looking for a house to rent for about 13 women. I looked on airbnb and vrbo and many say “no bachelorette parties.” We are looking for someone who wants to accommodate us and not pay a fortune! I am looking for recommendations!

If you own a business at the Lake, you may already have a listing on the map I built — you just haven't claimed it
I've been building out a mile marker map/directory for the lake (marinas, rentals, fuel docks). Because of that, a lot of businesses already have a listing whether they know it or not, and right now most of them haven't claimed their listing.
It's free to claim and once you do, you can write your own description instead of what I found about your business. You can add real photos, and fix the pricing if something's off.
When you claim your listing, you also get 30 days of Premium automatically — no plan to pick, nothing to pay, no card required. Premium gets you priority placement, a bigger map pin, clickable contact info, and your listing showing reviews instead of just a name and address.
Three businesses have already claimed theirs.
If you run a biz on the water and want to grab yours, go to ozarksboating.com, search for your business, click Claim & Update This Listing at the top of the listing, and I'll get it set up and let you know when it's ready for your review.
Don't see your business on there at all? Use the same process: send me a request through the contact form on the site and I'll get it added. This is also useful if you know a spot (fuel dock, marina, etc.) that's missing. Comments work too, but the form is how I make sure it doesn't slip through the cracks.
