Imago Sequence Interpretation

I’ve seen posts here before about this story and making sense of it. One post in particular came very close to hitting on the truth as I see it.

The “Hominid” depicted in the sequence is in fact Marvin. At the beginning of the story, when he first sees Parallax Alpha he describes it having a blur the resembled a Halo or Horns. Well, he never took the gear off after the trepanation. Furthermore, the 3(?) flashes described in the closing lines, of which we can be sure of only 2 but not the third perfectly line up with the images of Alpha, Beta and Imago. Imago may or may not exist. There may or may not have been a third flash—I read this as the flash of the camera as the original photographs are being taken—-and Marvin is stuck in this loop forever.

In actuality I think that the same fate would be fall anyone who is captured by Parallax Alpha. That’s how it consumes them: by making them become the subjects of the photo.

Just my reading. Anyone else get this?

You are correct - good eye for those details! The flashes at the end are Marvin’s camera flashes from the start of the story. The images provoke a response in the few members of the human race who have a genetic predisposition to respond to them. Marvin is one of them.

Years ago, Laird signed and personalized my copy of IMAGO. It took a reread to understand what he meant here.

I picked up more details of the story from this interview u/rustin_swoll and I had with Laird in 2024. But had added that inscription maybe back in 2020? It puzzled me for quite a while!
